Cardiotoxicity is the most worrying cardiovascular alteration in patients treated with chemotherapy. To improve the understanding regarding the cardiotoxicity, we studied whether 1) patients with cardiac dysfunction related to anthracycline-based chemotherapy have augmented sympathetic nerve activity and decreased exercise capacity and 2) these responses are similar to those observed in patients with heart failure caused by other etiologies. Sixteen patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction related to anthracycline-based chemotherapy with or without chest radiation (HFrEFCA),

The stellate ganglion (SG), as a type of sympathetic ganglion, consists of the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae and the first thoracic sympathetic ganglia. SG block (SGB) is a minimally invasive injection that aims to inject low-concentration local anesthetics to induce a broad sympathetic blocking effect near the SG. There have been no changes and progress in the clinical application of SGB since the 1830s due to several potential risks, including hematoma from blood vessel injury, hoarseness from recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, and cardiopulmonary arrest. The feasibility and safety of

Cardiac autonomic neuropathy resulting from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is common; however, its mechanism remains unknown. The current work attempted to explore the function and mechanism of the P2Y13 receptor in HIV-glycoprotein 120 (gp120)-induced neuropathy in cervical sympathetic ganglion. The superior cervical ganglion (SCG) of the male SD rat was coated with HIV-gp120 to establish a model of autonomic neuropathy. In each group, we measured heart rate, blood pressure, heart rate variability, sympathetic nerve discharge and cardiac function. The expression of P2Y13 mRNA an

Horner’s syndrome (HS), caused by lesions of the 3-neuron oculosympathetic nerve pathway (ONP), includes the triad: blepharoptosis, miosis and anhidrosis (ipsilateral with ONP damage). Thyroid−related HS represents an unusual entity underling thyroid nodules/goiter/cancer−HS (T-HS), and post-thyroidectomy HS (Tx-HS). We aim to overview Tx-HS. This is a narrative review. We revised PubMed published, full-length, English papers from inception to November 2022. Additionally, we introduced data on post-thyroidectomy lymphocele/chylous leakage (Tx-L), and introduced a new pediatric case with both T

INTRODUCTION: Cervical schwannomas are rare diseases treated by complete resection, leading to potential neurological deficits. Intracapsular enucleation is an acceptable alternative to preserve the involved nerve function, but the clinical outcomes by an aesthetically pleasing approach remain unrevealed. This study evaluated functional and oncological outcomes after intracapsular enucleation of cervical schwannomas via retroauricular hairline (Roh's) incision.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study included 17 patients with cervical schwannomas who underwent intracapsula

Vitronectin (VTN) is a glycoprotein enriched in the blood and activates integrin receptors. VTN blood levels increase only in female mice 24 h after an ischemic stroke and exacerbate brain injury through IL-6-driven inflammation, but the VTN induction mechanism is unknown. Here, a 30 min middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in female mice induced VTN protein in the liver (normally the main source) in concert with plasma VTN. Male mice were excluded as VTN is not induced after stroke. MCAO also increased plasma VTN levels after de novo expression of VTN in the liver of VTN-/- female mice, us

Interactions between the immune system and the nervous system are crucial in maintaining homeostasis, and disturbances of these neuro-immune interactions may participate in carcinogenesis and metastasis. Nerve endings have been identified within solid tumors in humans and experimental animals. Although the involvement of the efferent sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation in carcinogenesis has been extensively investigated, the role of the afferent sensory neurons and the neuropeptides in tumor development, growth, and progression is recently appreciated. Similarly, current findings point

Stellate ganglion (SG) intervention is currently widely being studied in many kinds of chronic pain. As one of the convenient ways to treat the sympathetic nervous system, the indications for stellate ganglion intervention (SGI) include complex regional pain syndrome, postherpetic neuralgia, cancer pain of different origins, orofacial pain, and so forth. SGI refers to the reversible or irreversible blocking of the cervical sympathetic trunk, cervical sympathetic ganglion, and their innervation range through noninvasive or minimally invasive treatment. Current treatment options include stellate

First bite syndrome (FBS) is an extremely rare complication of carotid endarterectomy (CEA). FBS presents with unique characteristics, development of brief and intense pain in the ipsilateral parotid region at the first bite of each meal, and improvement with subsequent mastication. Here, we report two cases of FBS following CEA. Both cases had anatomical difficulty of a high carotid bifurcation and a high cervical lesion. The lingual and facial arteries (or their common arterial trunk) branched off the external carotid artery (ECA) close to a high carotid bifurcation. The operations required

Autonomic nerves, including the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, control the immune system along with their physiological functions. On the peripheral side, the interaction between the splenic sympathetic nerves and immune cells is important for the anti-inflammatory effects. However, the central mechanism underlying these anti-inflammatory effects remains unclear. C1 neurons respond to stressors and subsequently determine the outflow of the autonomic nervous system. We have previously shown that C1 neurons protect against acute kidney injury and found a signaling connection between per

Harlequin syndrome (HS) is a rare autonomic disorder. The causes and risk factors of the disease are not fully understood. Some cases of HS are associated with traumatic injuries, tumors, or vascular impairments of the head. Symptoms of HS can also occur in some autoimmune disorders, ophthalmic disorders, sleep disorders, and with certain organic lesions. In this context, a thorough review of the pathophysiology of HS in relation to neurological, ophthalmological, and dermatological conditions is necessary. In this mini-review, we aim to review the pathophysiological changes and underlying mec

Horner's syndrome is characterized by a triad of symptoms (ipsilateral miosis, ptosis, and anhidrosis) with damage of the sympathetic nervous system. The condition may be congenital or acquired from traumatic conditions including cardiovascular surgery. Horner's syndrome can be also caused by neck trauma especially when cervical vital structures such as blood vessels, the aerodigestive tract, and nerves are disrupted. This report describes a 16-year-old woman with delayed Horner's syndrome who initially presented with internal jugular vein injury caused by multiple penetrating stab injury to t

Horner Syndrome (HS) is characterized by symptoms of ipsilateral miosis, ptosis, enophthalmos, and facial anhidrosis, which is caused by the damaged oculosympathetic pathway. HS is rarely reported as postoperative complications of fine-needle aspiration (FNA). We report a case of HS triggered by Ultrasound-guided FNA during thyroid cancer management and conducted the literature review. A 31-year-old male with differentiated thyroid cancer underwent total thyroidectomy and regional lymph node dissection as well as radioactive iodine ablation, presented with persistently elevated tumor marker of

Peripheral nerve injury can cause debilitating disease and immune cell-mediated destruction of the affected nerve. While the focus has been on the nerve-regenerative response, the effect of loss of innervation on lymph node function is unclear. Here, we show that the popliteal lymph node (popLN) receives direct neural input from the sciatic nerve and that sciatic denervation causes lymph node expansion. Loss of sympathetic, adrenergic tone induces the expression of IFN-γ in LN CD8 T cells, which is responsible for LN expansion. Surgery-induced IFN-γ expression and expansion can be rescued by β

BACKGROUND: The surgical treatment of hyperhidrosis by thoracic sympathectomy has brought, in addition to symptomatic relief for many, its main adverse effect: compensatory or reflex sweating. The clipping technique in place of the sympathetic nerve section gave rise to the hope of reversibility, but the positive results showed to be quite divergent, evidencing the academic deficiency regarding the study of this phenomenon.
AIM: To observe micro and macroscopic damage caused by the polymer clip on sympathetic nerve of rabbits seven days after their clipping and the findings after three weeks

PURPOSE: To test whether an acute corneal injury activates a proinflammatory reflex, involving corneal sensory nerves expressing substance P (SP), the hypothalamus, and the sympathetic nervous system.
METHODS: C57BL6/N (wild-type [WT]) and SP-depleted B6.Cg-Tac1tm1Bbm/J (TAC1-KO) mice underwent bilateral corneal alkali burn. One group of WT mice received oxybuprocaine before alkali burn. One hour later, hypothalamic neuronal activity was assessed in vivo by magnetic resonance imaging and ex vivo by cFOS staining. Some animals were followed up for 14 days to evaluate corneal transparency and i

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunction promotes organ injury after major surgery through numerous pathological mechanisms. Vagal withdrawal is a key feature of autonomic dysfunction, and it may increase the severity of pain. We systematically evaluated studies that examined whether vagal neuromodulation can reduce perioperative complications and pain.
METHODS: Two independent reviewers searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Register of Controlled Clinical Trials for studies of vagal neuromodulation in humans. Risk of bias was assessed; I2 index quantified heterogeneity. Primary outcomes were or

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a common neurosurgical emergency, and early brain injury (EBI) plays an important role in acute brain injury of SAH. Our objective is to investigate the effect of stellate ganglion block (SGB) on the clinical prognosis of patients with SAH (registration number ChiCTR2000030910).
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 102 participants. Patients with SAH were assigned to the SGB or nSGB group. Patients in the SGB group received SGB four times (once every other day starting on the day of the surgery). In contrast, patients in the nS

We aimed to localize the pharyngeal branches of the pharyngeal plexus to preclude postoperative complications such as dysphagia resulting from injury to those branches. Cranial nerves IX and X and the sympathetic trunk were dissected on 10 sides in the necks of embalmed adult cadavers of European descent to identify the pharyngeal branches so that anatomical landmarks could be identified and injury thereby avoided. In all sides, the pharyngeal branches originated from the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves and the superior cervical ganglion and entered the posterior pharyngeal wall at the C2-C4
