[The somato-sympathetic and somato-somatic reflexes in the spontaneous hypertensive rats].

In anaesthetized normotensive (Wistar) and hypertensive (SHR) rats, sympathetic and somatic reflexes were studied before and after cervical spinal cord transection. Single shock stimulation of a peripheral afferent nerve of brachial plexus produced reflex discharges in the cervical sympathetic trunk and the radial nerve. In rats with intact brain stem, evoked response in the cervical sympathetic trunk was composed of three components, but evoked response in radial nerve consisted of two components. The total somato-sympathetic reflex in hypertensive rats was more on 54 % than the somato-sympat

Transnasal odontoid resection: is there an anatomic explanation for differing swallowing outcomes?

OBJECT: Swallowing dysfunction is common following transoral (TO) odontoidectomy. Preliminary experience with newer endoscopic transnasal (TN) approaches suggests that dysphagia may be reduced with this alternative. However, the reasons for this are unclear. The authors hypothesized that the TN approach results in less disruption of the pharyngeal plexus and anatomical structures associated with swallowing. The authors investigate the histological and gross surgical anatomical relationship between pharyngeal plexus innervation of the upper aerodigestive tract and the surgical approaches used (

P2X(7) inhibition in stellate ganglia prevents the increased sympathoexcitatory reflex via sensory-sympathetic coupling induced by myocardial ischemic injury.

Purinergic signaling has been found to participate in the regulation of cardiovascular function. In this study, using a rat myocardial ischemic injury model, the sympathoexcitatory reflex mediated by P2X7 receptor via sensory-sympathetic coupling between cervical dorsal root ganglia (DRG) nerves and stellate ganglia (SG) nerves was explored. Our results showed that the systolic blood pressure, heart rate, serum cardiac enzymes concentrations, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) concentrations were increased, and the expression levels of P2X7 mRNA and protein in DRG and SG

Sensory-sympathetic coupling in superior cervical ganglia after myocardial ischemic injury facilitates sympathoexcitatory action via P2X7 receptor.

P2X receptors participate in cardiovascular regulation and disease. After myocardial ischemic injury, sensory-sympathetic coupling between rat cervical DRG nerves and superior cervical ganglia (SCG) facilitated sympathoexcitatory action via P2X7 receptor. The results showed that after myocardial ischemic injury, the systolic blood pressure, heart rate, serum cardiac enzymes, IL-6, and TNF-α were increased, while the levels of P2X7 mRNA and protein in SCG were also upregulated. However, these alterations diminished after treatment of myocardial ischemic (MI) rats with the P2X7 antagonist oxATP.

Sympathetic denervation of peri-infarct myocardium requires the p75 neurotrophin receptor.

Development of cardiac sympathetic heterogeneity after myocardial infarction contributes to ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Regions of sympathetic hyperinnervation and denervation appear in the viable myocardium beyond the infarcted area. While elevated nerve growth factor (NGF) is implicated in sympathetic hyperinnervation, the mechanisms underlying denervation are unknown. Recent studies show that selective activation of the p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75(NTR)) in sympathetic neurons causes axon degeneration. We used mice that lack p75(NTR) to test the hypothesis that activ

The influence of cervical spinal cord compression and vertebral displacement on somatosympathetic reflexes in the rat.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: One theory within chiropractic proposes that vertebral subluxation in the upper cervical region induces spinal cord compression sufficient to alter spinal cord efferent output. We report on the feasibility of three different experimental approaches to test this theory. METHODS: A high threshold electrical-evoked somatosympathetic reflex was recorded in adrenal or renal nerves of 10 anaesthetized adult male rats before and after (1) graded pressure was applied directly to the C1/C2 spinal cord segment in eight rats by the use of either direct compression or inflation of an

Coexisting right nonrecurrent and right recurrent inferior laryngeal nerves: a rare and controversial entity: report of a case and review of the literature.

Variations in the course of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) can occur, including the development of a nonrecurrent inferior laryngeal nerve (NRILN). Rarely, both a right RLN and a right NRILN have been reported in the same patient, merging before they enter the larynx. A case is presented, including images, and the literature concerning this rare anatomical finding is reviewed, including studies suggesting alternative explanations for these cases. Fourteen previously reported cases of coexisting RLN and NRILN were identified, all involving the right side. Some cases were associated with an

Transection of preganglionic axons leads to CNS neuronal plasticity followed by survival and target reinnervation.

The goals of the present study were to investigate the changes in sympathetic preganglionic neurons following transection of distal axons in the cervical sympathetic trunk (CST) that innervate the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) and to assess changes in the protein expression of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor TrkB in the thoracic spinal cord. At 1 week, a significant decrease in soma volume and reduced soma expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in the intermediolateral cell column (IML) of T1 spinal cord were observed, with both ChAT-ir and non-immunoreacti

New objective findings after whiplash injuries: High blood flow in painful cervical soft tissue: An ultrasound pilot study.

Background The presence of high blood flow in the structurally abnormal and painful regions of tendinosis, but not in the normal pain-free tendons, was recently confirmed by colour Doppler (CD) ultrasound (US). Biopsies from the regions with high blood flow demonstrated the presence of sympathetic and sensitive nerve fibres juxtapositioned to neovessels. Grey-scale US and CD are reliable methods used to evaluate structural homogeneity, thickness, and blood flow in the peripheral tendons. The aim of this study was to utilize CD to qualitatively evaluate for the presence of abnormal high blood f

Transient changes in spinal cord glial cells following transection of preganglionic sympathetic axons.

Following peripheral nerve injury, retrograde signals originating from the injury site may activate intrinsic factors in the injured neurons, possibly leading to regenerative growth. Retrograde influences from peripheral injury sites may lead to the activation of glial cells in the vicinity of the centrally located cell bodies of the injured neurons. Few studies have examined changes in the spinal cord intermediolateral cell column (IML), which houses sympathetic preganglionic cell bodies, following injury to distal axons in the cervical sympathetic trunk (CST). The goal of the present study w

Superior laryngeal nerve loop: patterns and surgical implications.

This study clarifies the patterns of the superior laryngeal nerve loop (SLN loop), connecting the cervical sympathetic chain (CSC) and the SLN and its branches, so as to provide an anatomic basis for decreasing the risk of injury to the external laryngeal nerve (ELN) during neck surgery. Fifty Chinese adult human cadavers fixed with 4 % formalin were dissected, and their SLN loop patterns were analyzed and summarized. In 98 of 100 sides the CSC anastomosed with the SLN and its branches, forming a looped nerve structure which we called the SLN loop. The SLN loops could be divided into five type

The sinuvertebral nerves at the craniovertebral junction: a microdissection study.

Bogduk et al. (1988, Spine 13:2-8) noted that the joints and ligaments at the cervico-occipital region are susceptible to whiplash injury. The upper three cervical sinuvertebral nerves (SVNs) at the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) are thought to be responsible for mediating pain from the ligaments, dura mater, and soft tissues of the posterior cranial fossa and upper cervical column. The purpose of this study was to describe in detail the origin and course of the SVNs at C0-C1, C1-C2, and C2-C3 intervertebral levels and their anterior intraspinal distribution. A sample comprising 10 adult, 12 f

Sympathetic reinnervation of peripheral targets following bilateral axotomy of the adult superior cervical ganglion.

The ability of adult injured postganglionic axons to reinnervate cerebrovascular targets is unknown, yet these axons can influence cerebral blood flow, particularly during REM sleep. The objective of the present study was to assess quantitatively the sympathetic reinnervation of vascular as well as non-vascular targets following bilateral axotomy of the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) at short term (1 day, 7 day) and long term (8 weeks, 12 weeks) survival time points. The sympathetic innervation of representative extracerebral blood vessels [internal carotid artery (ICA), basilar artery (BA),

Reflex modulation of ovarian estradiol secretion by noxious mechanical stimulation of a hindpaw in anesthetized rats.

Previously, we demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the superior ovarian nerve in rats reduces the ovarian estradiol secretion rate. In the present study, we examined the effect of noxious mechanical afferent stimulation (pinching) of a hindpaw on the ovarian estradiol secretion rate in rats. The rats were anesthetized on the day of estrus, and the ovarian venous blood was collected intermittently. The secretion rate of estradiol from the ovary was calculated from differences in the estradiol concentration between ovarian venous plasma and systemic arterial blood plasma, and from the fl

Effects of oxymatrine on sympathoexcitatory reflex induced by myocardial ischemic signaling mediated by P2X₃ receptors in rat SCG and DRG.

Sympathoexcitatory reflex is characterized by an increase in blood pressure and sympathetic nerve activity. P2X₃ receptors in SCG neurons are involved in increasing sympathoexcitatory reflex after myocardial ischemic (MI) injury. The present study is aimed to explore the effects of oxymatrine (Oxy) on the transmission of myocardial ischemic signaling mediated by P2X₃ receptors in rat superior cervical ganglia (SCG) and cervical dorsal root ganglia (DRG) in the sympathoexcitatory reflex after myocardial ischemic injury. In this study, the expression levels of P2X₃ immunoreactivity, mRNA and pro
