Live birth after cervical ectopic uterus transplantation in mice.

An ideal animal model is a prerequisite for the basic research of uterus transplantation. This study aimed to develop a new cervical ectopic uterus transplantation mice model, which was established by vascular anastomosis of the right common iliac artery and vein of the donor with the right common carotid artery and external jugular vein of the recipient, respectively, using the cuff method. The survival status of the transplanted uterus was assessed by macroscopic observation and histological examination after surgery, and the function of the graft uterus was tested by verifying whether the p

Ultrasound-guided double central venous access for azygos vein via the ninth and tenth intercostal veins.

Some patients with intestinal failure, who are dependent on total parenteral nutrition for long periods, suffer from a lack of suitable conventional venous access points, including axillary, external jugular, internal jugular, subclavian, saphenous, and the brachio-cephalic and femoral veins, due to their occlusion. Furthermore, extensive central venous stenosis and/or thrombosis of the superior and inferior vena cava may preclude further catheterization, so uncommon routes must be used, which can be challenging. In such patients, the azygos vein via the intercostal vein is a viable candidate.

The effects of internal jugular vein compression for modulating and preserving white matter following a season of American tackle football: A prospective longitudinal evaluation of differential head impact exposure.

The purpose of this clinical trial was to examine whether internal jugular vein compression (JVC)-using an externally worn neck collar-modulated the relationships between differential head impact exposure levels and pre- to postseason changes in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-derived diffusivity and anisotropy metrics of white matter following a season of American tackle football. Male high-school athletes (n = 284) were prospectively assigned to a non-collar group or a collar group. Magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from participants pre- and postseason and head impact exposure w

Transvenous embolisation via an occluded inferior petrosal sinus for cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas.

AIM OF THE STUDY: We retrospectively searched for cases of transvenous embolisation for cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five cases underwent transvenous embolisation via the inferior petrosal sinus (IPS). IPS was probed using a standard 0.035-inch guidewire for microcatheter navigation, which was successful in all cases. RESULTS: IPS was occluded in 17 cases (68%). Only one case experienced a complication, where the approach was changed to the contralateral side because of internal jugular vein injury. The relationship between the external auditory

Feasibility and Safety of Peripheral Intravenous Administration of Vasopressor Agents in Resource-limited Settings.

BACKGROUND: Vasopressors are conventionally administered through a central venous catheter (CVC) and not through a peripheral venous catheter (PVC) since the latter is believed to be associated with increased risk of extravasation. Placement of a CVC requires suitably trained personnel to be on hand, and in resource-limited settings, this requirement may delay placement. Because of this and in cases where suitably trained personnel are not immediately available, some clinicians may be prompted to utilise a PVC for infusing vasopressors. The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility

Surgical and embryological perspective of a big loop of internal carotid artery extending laterally beyond internal jugular vein.

Knowledge of variations of the internal carotid artery is significant to surgeons and radiologists. The internal carotid artery normally runs a straight course in the neck. Its anomalies can lead to its iatrogenic injuries. We report a case of a large loop of the internal carotid artery in a male cadaver aged about 75 years. The common carotid artery terminated by dividing it into the external carotid artery and internal carotid arteries at the level of the upper border of the thyroid cartilage. From the level of origin, the internal carotid artery coursed upwards, backwards and laterally, and

Superficial middle temporal vein as a pivotal route to embolize dural carotid-cavernous fistulas.

Dural carotid-cavernous fistulas (DCCF) are located in the cavernous sinus wall involving the arterial feeders from the external and internal carotid arteries. The venous route usually passes through the internal jugular vein and inferior petrosal sinus (IPS) up to the pathologic shunts of the cavernous sinus. In cases of a thrombosed IPS, catheterization is not always possible because of the obstruction. Here, we report eight cases of DCCF treated with endovascular transvenous embolization via the superficial middle temporal vein (SMTV). A retrospective study involving eight patients with DCC

Side-to-Side Anastomosis Training Model Using Rat Common Carotid Arteries.

BACKGROUND: The side-to-side anastomosis is one of the difficult bypass configurations that may be used in various complex cerebral vascular and neoplastic cases. Few pure arterial models exist for practicing this bypass subtype. OBJECTIVE: To provide an optimized side-to-side anastomosis training model using rat common carotid arteries (CCA). METHODS: Bilateral CCAs were exposed in the neck of 10 anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. The arteries were juxtaposed in parallel, using temporary aneurysm clips applied proximally and distally. CCA caliber and the length of CCA juxtaposition were meas

Neurologic recovery after deep hypothermic circulatory arrest in rats: A description of a long-term survival model without blood priming.

Brain injury associated with deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) has been recognized in patients with congenital heart diseases and those undergoing aortic arch surgeries. However, the preclinical investigation of long-term cerebral injury and recovery mechanisms related to DHCA has been restricted to a satisfactory recovery animal model with a determined recovery time. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a long-term surviving DHCA model without blood priming in rats, in order to investigate the pathophysiology of long-term complications in further studies. Twelve Sprague-Da

Retinoic acid attenuates contrast-induced acute kidney injury in a miniature pig model.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) has been the third leading cause of hospital-acquired AKI. Retinoic acid (RA), the main derivative of vitamin A, has preventative and therapeutic effects in ischemia-reperfusion-AKI and UUO models, but little is known about its effects on CI-AKI. This study aimed to explore the effects of RA on CI-AKI as well as the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: We established a new miniature pig model of CI-AKI by catheterizing the external jugular vein and injecting a single dose of iohexol after dehydration. Bun, Scr, serum and urinary RBP and β-M

Routine use of ultrasound to avert mechanical complications during placement of tunneled dialysis catheters for hemodialysis.

OBJECTIVE: While placement of tunneled dialysis catheters for hemodialysis access is considered a routine procedure, it is associated with a small chance of mechanical complications. Because the literature examining these issues is not recent and our impression of the incidence of these postprocedural complications is at variance with the existing literature, we decided to review our experience. METHODS: Since 1998, our vascular service has placed 1766 tunneled hemodialysis catheters in 1065 patients for hemodialysis access. All catheters were placed with ultrasound guidance for the puncture,

An unusual shot-retrograde transthoraco-abdominal venous bullet embolization.

A 72-year-old gentleman was brought to the emergency department, after sustaining an allegedly accidental airgun-shot injury to the right side of his neck. A chest radiograph and plain CT chest revealed the bullet lodged deeply in the soft tissues of the right side of the neck. He was taken up for an emergency neck exploration for foreign body removal. Peroperatively, the bullet was observed to be lodged in the right internal jugular vein. During the attempt to retrieve the bullet, it inadvertently migrated downstream. An intraoperative fluoroscopy revealed the bullet in the thorax near the le

Coil Embolization of a Carotid-Cavernous Fistula Through Superior Ophthalmic Venous Access via External Jugular Vein Puncture Approach.

Carotid-cavernous fistulas are vascular malformations that pose a risk for intracranial hemorrhage when there is documented cortical venous drainage. When possible, treatment with transvenous embolization has become the technique of choice since the late 1990s.1,2 We present a case of a patient with a carotid-cavernous fistula treated with venous coil embolization via a jugular venous approach. The patient was a 59-year-old female with a history of intense headaches. Initial magnetic resonance imaging showed congestion in the right cavernous sinus, and a diagnostic angiogram revealed a caverno

Location and structure of fibrous sheath formed after placing a tunneled hemodialysis catheter in a large pig model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the location and structure of the fibrous sheath formed after the placement of tunneled, cuffed hemodialysis catheters in large animals, 70 kg pigs. We focused on describing the location of the fibrous sheath in relation to the catheter. Its location explains the fibrous sheath's ability to cause catheter dysfunction by covering the catheter exit ports located at the catheter's tip. DESIGN: We used three animals. Each animal had a tunneled, cuffed, 15-French diameter hemodialysis catheter placed in the external jugular vein, with the tip at the junction
