INTRODUCTION: The sexual transmission of intestinal parasites has been reported for a long time, even before the HIV pandemic. It mainly involves protozoa. More rarely, helminths are involved: Strongyloides stercoralis, Enterobius vermicularis. This type of transmission is almost exclusively observed in men who have sex with men (MSM) through direct oral-genital-anal sexual contact.
OBSERVATIONS: We present four cases of sexually transmitted strongyloidiasis in MSM.
DISCUSSION: Several associated factors were found: HIV infection, recurrent episodes of other sexually transmitted infections,

Strongyloidiasis, caused by the soil-transmitted helminth Strongyloides stercoralis, is estimated to infect around 600 million people worldwide. Ivermectin is the current first-line treatment. This prospective study evaluated long-term treatment response in patients with chronic strongyloidiasis. Conducted from 2019 to 2022 at Vega Baja Hospital in Alicante, Spain, this study enrolled 28 patients diagnosed with S. stercoralis infection. Patients received ivermectin at a dosage of 200 mcg/kg for one or two days and were followed for at least 12 months, with evaluations at 3, 6, 12, and 18 month

A 77-year-old man with idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome on corticosteroids presented with fever, diarrhea, and anemia. Initial investigations, including screening for enteric pathogens, were negative, and empirical antibiotics were initiated, with subsequent deterioration. Endoscopy revealed Strongyloides stercoralis in the duodenal wall. Treatment with ivermectin resulted in clinical and hematologic resolution. This case highlights the need to consider strongyloidiasis in the differential diagnosis of peripheral eosinophilia.

Strongyloidiasis (or anguillulosis) is helminthosis caused by Strongyloides stercoralis found mostly in (sub)tropical areas and sometimes in temperate settings. We report a case of strongyloidiasis hyperinfection, diagnosed on a BALF in a 46-year-old woman of senegalese origin with no recent travel history. The patient initially presented to the emergency department with worsening chronic lower back pain, asthenia and a 10-day history of general deterioration. Plasma cell leukemia was diagnosed and treated with a block of dexamethasone combined with chemotherapy. Our laboratory incidentally de

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloidiasis caused by the parasite Strongyloides stercoralis, is a significant public health issue, particularly in low-income countries with inadequate sanitation practices. Ivermectin is the recommended drug by the World Health Organization for treating S. stercoralis infection, but its efficacy in Ethiopia has not been extensively studied. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Ivermectin treatment for S. stercoralis infection in adult patients.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in government hospitals in northwest Ethiopia from June 2022 to Februar

BACKGROUND: When and how to screen for strongyloidiasis in high-income countries remain to be elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, associated factors, and outcome of strongyloidiasis in Taiwan and proposed clinical criteria for serological screening.
METHODS: Adults who were immunocompromised or about to undergo iatrogenic immunosuppression (proactive-screening cohort) and those with clinical presentations suggesting strongyloidiasis (diagnosis-driven cohort) were prospectively enrolled at five hospitals in Taiwan. Serum anti-Strongyloides IgG was determined by two enzy

Strongyloidiasis is a common intestinal infection that may persist in humans for decades without symptoms or can present as a potentially fatal, broadly disseminated infection in an immunocompromised host. This report describes a rare case of concomitant strongyloidiasis and E. coli meningitis that was successfully recognized and treated in a patient 20 years post-renal transplantation.

Molecular epidemiological surveillance for zoonotic strongyloidiasis is confounded by a genus-specific TaqMan probe assay that conflates Strongyloides fuelleborni fuelleborni with Strongyloides stercoralis. To improve surveillance, we developed and validated a novel duplex species-specific TaqMan probe assay, screening a representative collection of available clinical samples. Our assay was highly discriminatory, evidencing no cross-reactivity, and had a lowest DNA detection limit of 1 pg/µL. However, as the genus-specific DNA assay has greater detection ability, we propose a 2-step protocol w

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis is endemic in many remote Indigenous communities in Australia. Early diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of chronic strongyloidiasis can prevent life-threatening clinical complications and decrease transmission in these endemic communities. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of a primary healthcare strategy designed to measure and reduce the prevalence of strongyloidiasis in four remote communities in northeast Arnhem Land.
METHODOLOGY: The primary healthcare strategy was a prospective, longitudinal, health-systems interventi

Strongyloides stercoralis (SS) is an intestinal parasite that can cause chronic asymptomatic infections, but in rare cases, it can progress to hyperinfection syndrome (SHS). This report describes a case of SHS associated with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism, a rare manifestation in an immunocompetent patient. A 19-year-old female patient with a 15-day history of abdominal pain, progressive edema of the lower limbs, hemoptotic cough, asthenia, and weight loss. During her hospitalization, she developed sudden dyspnea, desaturation, and distributive shock, requiring invasive me

Despite the inclusion of strongyloidiasis as a neglected tropical disease and the mortality of the hyperinfection and disseminated forms of this disease, accurate diagnostic tools are still needed. This study evaluated SsRapid® as a candidate for a rapid diagnostic test for strongyloidiasis using well-characterized serum samples from an endemic area in Brazil. SsRapid®, a prototype immunochromatographic test that detects IgG4 anti-S. stercoralis, specifically using the recombinant antigen NIE SsRapid® was performed using 140 samples from individuals with confirmed strongyloidiasis, other paras

Following the recent report of strongyloidiasis caused by Strongyloides fuelleborni within a semi-captive colony of baboons in a UK safari park, we investigated the genetic relationships of this isolate with other Strongyloides isolates across the world. Whole-genome sequencing data were generated with later phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial (mt) cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and nuclear ribosomal 18S sequences against 300 published Strongyloides reference genotypes. The putative African origin of the UK S. fuelleborni was confirmed and full-length mt genome sequences were assembled

BACKGROUND: The availability of laboratory tests to screen and diagnose migrants and travellers for neglected and tropical parasitic diseases significantly impacts individual and public health. Italian scientific societies for parasitology, tropical diseases, and global health developed a survey to assess number and geographical localisation of laboratories able to carry out adequate diagnostics.
METHODS: An open-ended and multiple-choice questionnaire was constructed and sent to 752 members working in Italian microbiology laboratories via scientific societies' mailing lists. Data concerning

Strongyloidiasis, a disease caused by Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) nematode, can present in acute, chronic, hyperinfection, and disseminated forms. It is of particular important due to its high mortality rate, especially among immunocompromised patients, and the absence of a gold standard diagnostic method. Eosinophilia, as a key sign, can help in the diagnosis of the infection. This report presents five cases of strongyloidiasis who referred to the 17 Shahrivar Hospital, Abadan County, Iran, for various reasons, including cardiovascular diseases, elective surgeries, and routine
