The Double-Edged Effect of Connexins and Pannexins of Glial Cells in Central and Peripheral Nervous System After Nerve Injury.

Glial cells play pivotal roles in homeostatic regulation and driving reactive pathologic changes after nerve injury. Connexins (Cxs) and pannexins (Panxs) have emerged as seminal proteins implicated in cell-cell communication, exerting a profound impact on the response processes of glial cell activation, proliferation, protein synthesis and secretion, as well as apoptosis following nerve injury. These influences are mediated through various forms, including protein monomers, hemichannel (HC), and gap junction (GJ), mainly by regulating intercellular or intracellular signaling pathways. Long-Term Outcomes of Crooked Nose Correction: The Value of Instrumental Diagnosis Trough Nasal Grid Analysis.

Background: Rhinoplasty is a leading cosmetic surgery, with the crooked nose being one of the most complex challenges due to its combination of functional and aesthetic issues. Involving multiple nasal components, a crooked nose remains difficult to correct, with a high recurrence rate. The aim of this study was to analyze the long-term outcomes and stability of the nasal pyramid after surgery through a nasal grid analysis. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 360 patients (20 men and 16 women) treated for moderate to severe nasal deviation between January 2014 and January 2020. All

Successful Transplantation of Multiple Organs from Donor after Helium Asphyxiation: First Case Report in Japan.

Helium inhalation has increased, but most cases are either minor injuries or deaths; there have not yet been any reported cases of brain death leading to organ donation. We report a patient who attempted helium inhalation and was declared brain dead and became an organ donor without complications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of deceased organ donation following helium asphyxiation in Japan. The patient in cardiac arrest was found with a helium-filled vinyl bag sealed around the neck. During emergency medical transport to the hospital, a spontaneous return of c

Evaluating the pivotal role of MRI in craniocervical junction injury diagnosis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Diagnosing craniocervical junction (CCJ) traumatic injuries at initial evaluation is challenging due to patient noncooperation, pain, and multiple traumas, often leading to missed diagnoses with long-term consequences. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 35-year-old male with chronic neck pain and neurological symptoms caused by an undiagnosed CCJ injury from a childhood motor vehicle accident. DIAGNOSES: The initial radiographs showed normal atlanto-dental interval, basion-dense interval, and basion-axial interval measurements. Symptoms prompted a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which revealed

Association of motoric cognitive risk syndrome with falls in older adults: findings from three longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: Falls pose a significant threat to older adults' health, affecting one-third of individuals aged over 65 annually and resulting in severe injuries despite numerous screening tools. While motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is established as a dementia risk factor, its utility as a fall prediction tool remains unclear due to inconsistent findings across populations. This study therefore aims to elucidate the associations between motoric cognitive risk syndrome and falls among older adults. METHODS: Participants aged ≥ 60 years were selected from the English Longitudinal Study of

Innovation under pressure: Managing a complex carotid-jugular fistula in a war-zone limited-resources area.

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) constitutes a pathological direct connection between an artery and a vein without an intervening capillary bed with a spectrum of high to low-grade malformation. Here, we present an unusual case of congenital neck AFV managed in a resource-limited setting in a war-zone area. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 43-year-old man presented with neck swelling and tinnitus since childhood with no history of trauma or surgical procedure. He was found to have reduced ejection fraction heart failure and atrial fibrillation and started on medications. Examination and bedside Gra

Suicidal hanging with complete decapitation: A forensic case report with review of biomechanics.

Decapitation resulting from hanging is an infrequent phenomenon, often influenced by multiple biomechanical factors. We report a case of a 72-year-old male who committed suicide by hanging, leading to complete decapitation. The drop height was approximately 10.668 m, with a static nylon rope of 9 mm thickness used as ligature material. Autopsy findings showed complete severance at the cervical spine level, primarily at the junction of C4/C5 with an additional anterior hemi-transection at the C6/C7 junction. Calculations revealed axial and radial forces acting at the neck to be 534.1 N and 3354

High superficial resemblance versus high functional task alignment simulation for central venous catheterization training: A randomized crossover trial.

INTRODUCTION: Fidelity in procedural skills simulation can be classified as superficial resemblance (simulator approximates real tissue appearance) or functional task alignment (key steps of simulation approximate those of real procedure). We hypothesized that resident physicians would prefer a simulation model with high functional task alignment over a model with higher superficial resemblance and lower functional task alignment in central venous catheter placement training. METHODS: We conducted a randomized crossover trial, enrolling residents from multiple specialties. We compared an Appe
