Role of PET in Radiation Oncology: A Theranostic Perspective on Detection of Radiation-Induced Complications.

Radiation therapy remains essential in managing thoracic and head and neck malignancies, yet radiation-induced injury to surrounding normal tissues continues to pose significant clinical challenges. Traditional assessment of radiation complications relies on clinical symptoms and anatomic imaging, often detecting injury only after irreversible damage has occurred. This article reviews the emerging role of fluorodeoxyglucose PET/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) as a theranostic tool for early detection and quantitative assessment of radiation-induced complications across multiple organ systems.

Pain Distribution and Its Association With Neuropathic Pain Features and Assumed Central Sensitization in Acute Whiplash-Associated Disorders: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate pain distribution in people with acute whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) and to explore its association with neuropathic pain and assumed central sensitization features. Although widespread pain is common after a whiplash injury, the relationship between pain extent (the area of the body perceived as painful) and underlying pain-related mechanisms in acute WAD remains poorly understood. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 124 individuals (mean age: 39.7±11.2 y; 67 females) with acute WAD grade II (7 to 30 d post-injury) completed questionnaires a

Transposing maxillofacial digital workflows to forensic reconstruction: 3D reassembly of fragmented craniofacial human remains.

Cold cases involving fragmented skeletal remains present major interpretative challenges, particularly when craniofacial trauma must be reconstructed from fragile, scattered bone fragments. In the present case, human remains discovered during excavation were severely altered and exhibited multiple craniofacial fractures. Forensic anthropologists and maxillofacial surgeons collaborated to restore cranial volume and clarify injury mechanism using a hospital-based digital workflow. All fragments were scanned using cone-beam computed tomography, manually segmented, virtually reassembled based on c

Bridging the Knowledge-Practice Gap in Cervical Spine Injury First Aid: A Cross-Sectional Study in Southern Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cervical spine injuries (CSIs) are life-threatening conditions commonly resulting from road traffic accidents and falls; improper first aid management can significantly worsen neurological outcomes. Public awareness and correct first aid response are critical for preventing secondary injury; despite this, available data from the southern provinces of Saudi Arabia remain insufficient. This study aimed to assess public awareness and first aid preparedness for CSIs across four southern regions of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed across multiple

Birth Trauma and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: Preliminary Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) arises from compression of neurovascular structures as they traverse the thoracic outlet at the base of the neck, with 3 main types: neurogenic, venous, and arterial. Established risk factors include acute trauma, repetitive upper extremity use, or congenital anatomical variations. Birth trauma, although relatively rare, remains a recognized cause of injury to the brachial plexus, yet its role in TOS development has not been investigated. This study aims to explore the prevalence of reported birth trauma among patients with clinically diagnosed and su

Impact of a structured case report on self-reported responses to simulated emergency scenarios: a randomized survey-based study.

Case reports are a long-standing component of medical research, but their association with self-reported responses to simulated clinical scenarios remains underexplored. This study investigated whether exposure to a structured case report influences simulated emergency medical decisions. This randomized survey-based study was conducted among licensed physicians between March and May 2025. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group, which received a structured case report on blunt neck trauma, or a control group, which did not. Both groups subsequently provided self-reported L

The role of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorders and anxiety on pain catastrophizing, disability, and illness perceptions in patients with chronic whiplash-associated disorders: a cross-sectional study.

Whiplash is an injury caused by a sudden acceleration-deceleration of the head, transferring energy to the spine. The clinical symptoms after the injury are known as whiplash-associated disorders (WAD), and the mechanisms of its chronicity and recovery remain unclear. We aimed to explore the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and anxiety with disability, pain catastrophizing, and illness perceptions in patients with chronic whiplash-associated disorders (cWAD). We carried out a multi-center cross-sectional study in which 120 participants with cWAD were recruite

Evolution of maxillofacial fractures before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic: an 8-year interrupted time series analysis from South-Western Romania.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic altered trauma epidemiology worldwide. Although reductions in maxillofacial trauma during lockdown periods have been widely reported, longitudinal changes in trauma characteristics and post-pandemic recovery remain insufficiently explored. This study evaluated temporal changes in maxillofacial trauma volume and injury characteristics across pre-COVID, COVID, and post-COVID periods using an interrupted time series (ITS) framework. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary maxillofacial surgery center in Romania, including patient

Cerebral arterial oxygen embolism as a complication of hyperbaric oxygen treatment: a case report.

Cerebral arterial gas embolism (CAGE) is a recognised complication of diving-related barotrauma and of medical procedures whereby gas enters the vascular system. CAGE is a principal indication for hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT). In contrast, CAGE resulting from HBOT itself is exceedingly rare. We describe the case of a 73-year-old man undergoing his first session of HBOT for a chronic lower limb wound, who developed acute focal neurological deficits during decompression. He had no known respiratory disease or smoking history. Immediate assessment demonstrated stable physiology. Initial com

Dermatofibroma Associated with Lymphoid Follicles Harboring Germinal Center: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Dermatofibromas (DFs) are common, benign firm dermal nodules. It is well known that their onsets often follow minor injuries, including insect bites or arthropod assaults on-site. The frequency of DF cases associated with lymphoid follicles (LF) harboring germinal center (GC) amounts to around 1∼4%. The pathogenesis of this peculiar association is currently unknown, leaving a challenging topic for interpretation. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 55-year-old, otherwise healthy woman with a slightly erythematous flat nodule on the right side of her neck. It had occurred 3

Lightning Strike-Induced Cutaneous Burns and Airway Injury: A Case Report Highlighting Recurrent Extubation Failure in a Critically Ill Patient.

INTRODUCTION: Lightning strikes cause a unique spectrum of cutaneous burn injuries that differ substantially from conventional thermal or high-voltage electrical burns. Despite the well-documented systemic lethality of lightning injuries, the burn-specific sequelae-including airway involvement and its contribution to ventilatory failure-remain underreported in the burn literature. CASE REPORT: We present a 31-year-old woman who sustained multiple cutaneous burns following a lightning strike, including a circumferential necklace-pattern burn to the neck, a large midline torso burn, and burns t

Analgesic use after internet-supported versus clinic-based neck-specific exercise in people with whiplash: a secondary analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neck-specific exercise (NSE), administered by a physiotherapist or via e-health platforms (NSEIT), has demonstrated promising outcomes in individuals with chronic whiplash-associated disorders (WAD). Whether NSE and NSEIT lead to changes in analgesic use is of clinical importance, but remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the changes in analgesic use among participants with WAD following either NSE or NSEIT. METHODS: A multicenter randomized controlled noninferiority trial with masked assessors was conducted across multiple physiotherapy clinics. Participants (n = 140)
