Traumatic Rib Injury: Patterns, Imaging Pitfalls, Complications, and Treatment.

The ribs are frequently affected by blunt or penetrating injury to the thorax. In the emergency department setting, it is vital for the interpreting radiologist to not only identify the presence of rib injuries but also alert the clinician about organ-specific injury, specific traumatic patterns, and acute rib trauma complications that require emergent attention. Rib injuries can be separated into specific morphologic fracture patterns that include stress, buckle, nondisplaced, displaced, segmental, and pathologic fractures. Specific attention is also required for flail chest and for fractures

Evaluation of unenhanced post-mortem computed tomography to detect chest injuries in violent death.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the performances of unenhanced post-mortem computed tomography (CT) to detect thoracic injuries in violent death. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospectively, we conducted a review of unenhanced CT scans of 67 victims of violent deaths with thoracic injuries and compared CT findings with the results of clinical autopsy. Our gold standard was a comparison of CT scans with autopsy discussed in a monthly forensic radiology multidisciplinary team meeting (MDTM). The data were collected by organ system: heart, pericardium, aorta, lungs, pleura, bone, and dia

Paediatric chest wall trauma causing delayed presentation of ventricular arrhythmia.

This report describes a paediatric patient presenting with haemodynamically stable non-sustained ventricular tachycardia 1 day after minor blunt chest trauma. Initial laboratory studies, chest X-ray and echocardiography were normal; however, cardiac MRI revealed precordial haematoma, myocardial contusion and small pericardial effusion. Throughout her hospital course, she remained asymptomatic aside from frequent couplets and triplets of premature ventricular contractions. Ectopy was controlled with oral verapamil. This case highlights how significant cardiac injury may be missed with standard

Pulmonary contusions after blunt chest trauma: clinical significance and evaluation of patient management.

INTRODUCTION: A pulmonary contusion is an entity defined as alveolar haemorrhage and pulmonary parenchymal destruction after blunt chest trauma. According to the literature, most pulmonary contusions can only be seen on a chest CT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the patients with pulmonary contusions, as well as their management, considering diagnostic and therapeutic options related to their outcomes, since we assumed, based on everyday clinical practice, that an 'overdiagnosing' and 'overtreatment' attitude towards this injury could be present. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The research was

Case Report of Serratus Plane Catheter for Pain Management in a Patient With Multiple Rib Fractures and an Inferior Scapular Fracture.

We placed a superficial serratus anterior plane catheter in an elderly woman with dementia and elevated clotting times who presented with multiple rib fractures after a mechanical fall. She was not a surgical candidate, and treatment consisted of conservative management with physical therapy and pain control. She was not a candidate for a patient-controlled analgesia regimen because of her dementia. Given her elevated international normalized ratio, thoracic epidural and paravertebral analgesia was also contraindicated. We placed an ultrasound-guided serratus anterior plane catheter, allowing

[Assessment of thoracic trauma at the 1st Department of Surgery in Brno (1 January 2011 - 31 December 2015)].

The epidemiology of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Africa is unique in the sense that six of the seven serotypes of FMD viruses (Southern African Territories [SAT] 1, SAT2, SAT3, A, O, and C), with the exception of Asia-1, have occurred in the last decade. Due to underreporting of FMD, the current strains circulating throughout sub-Saharan Africa are in many cases unknown. For SAT1, SAT2, and serotype A viruses, the genetic diversity is reflected in antigenic variation, and indications are that vaccine strains may be needed for each topotype. This has serious implications for control using va

Associated thoracic injury in patients with a clavicle fracture: a retrospective analysis of 1461 polytrauma patients.

PURPOSE: During primary survey the main goal is to ascertain life-threatening injuries. A chest X-ray is recommended in all polytrauma patients as thoracic injury plays an important role in mortality. However, treatment-dictating injuries are often missed on the chest X-ray. In contrast, clavicle fractures should be relatively easy to diagnose on a chest X-ray. We previously showed that clavicle fractures occur in approximately 10 % of all polytrauma patients in our population. The aim was to compare polytrauma patients, with and without a clavicle fracture, to investigate if a clavicle fractu

Pulmonary Contusion and Traumatic Pneumatoceles in a Platform Diver with Hemoptysis.

BACKGROUND: Injuries in divers resulting purely from impact with the water are uncommon in the published literature. We present a case report of pulmonary contusion in a young diver. CASE REPORT: A young, healthy competitive platform diver landed flat on his back in the water from a dive of 10 meters. He complained of upper back pain and had an episode of hemoptysis after the dive. He was initially observed for 15 hours postinjury, and was discharged when three chest radiographs (CXRs) taken at 1, 7, and 11 hours postinjury did not show significant abnormalities. Thirty-six hours postinjury,

BACKGROUND: Flail chest is managed with mechanical ventilation or inhalation therapy, and analgesia. Mechanical ventilations carry risks by themselves and disengage with the external fixators so they must be operated to improve lung ventilatory mechanics and cleaning. Little has been published on the use of bioabsorbable material and its evolution in the setting of flail chest. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A material that did had to be retired, that presented the malleability of titanium and its inflammatory reaction was minimal and could be handled in both adults and children was investigated. Estimated injury risk for specific injuries and body regions in frontal motor vehicle crashes.

OBJECTIVE: Injury risk curves estimate motor vehicle crash (MVC) occupant injury risk from vehicle, crash, and/or occupant factors. Many vehicles are equipped with event data recorders (EDRs) that collect data including the crash speed and restraint status during a MVC. This study's goal was to use regulation-required data elements for EDRs to compute occupant injury risk for (1) specific injuries and (2) specific body regions in frontal MVCs from weighted NASS-CDS data. METHODS: Logistic regression analysis of NASS-CDS single-impact frontal MVCs involving front seat occupants with frontal ai
