Improvement of Surgical Wound Healing With Ozonated Oil in Bilateral Breast Surgery: A Pilot Intra-patient Comparative Study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of ozonated oil compared to conventional wound care in enhancing postoperative wound healing and cosmetic outcomes in bilateral breast surgery. The primary outcomes were pruritus, pain, and scar aesthetics (color, texture, and thickness) at six weeks. METHODS: A prospective, self-controlled pilot study was conducted on five female patients undergoing bilateral breast surgery (10 wounds). One breast received conventional care (cleaning with saline and topical antiseptics), while the contralateral breast was treated with topical ozonated oil (Ozoaqua®, Spain)

Cancer Incidence and Childhood Residence Near the Coldwater Creek Radioactive Waste Site.

IMPORTANCE: Beginning in the 1940s, radioactive waste from the effort to develop an atomic bomb was stored in the open near the St Louis, Missouri, airport, and over several decades contaminated nearby Coldwater Creek. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether living near Coldwater Creek in childhood was associated with self-reported cancer incidence in the St Louis Baby Tooth-Later Life Health Study (SLBT). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The SLBT cohort study was centered in St Louis and included individuals who donated their baby teeth from 1958 to 1970 to assess exposure to atmospheric nuclear w

Efficacy of Vacuum-assisted Wound Closure in Improving Healing in Breast Surgery Patients: AReview.

BACKGROUND: Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been shown to facilitate complex wound closure, decrease healing complications, and improve scar quality. Recently, its application in closed incision wound healing has been studied. Although relatively new to plastic surgery, outcomes and complication rates of NPWT compared with conventional dressings following breast surgery have been increasingly studied. The purpose of this study is to review the literature to evaluate the efficacy of NPWT over standard-of-care closure in breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery. METHODS: A PubMed

Forgotten Surgical Sponge Mimicking Fat Necrosis Following Breast Reduction Surgery.

A forgotten surgical sponge following surgery, also called textiloma, is a rare yet significant issue, whereas fat necrosis is more prevalent, particularly in breast surgery. We present a case experiencing persistent postoperative pain, a lump in the right breast, delayed wound healing, and the formation of a fistula following breast reduction surgery. The patient's symptoms were managed conservatively for 1 year because they were initially misdiagnosed as fat necrosis. A subsequent mammogram suggested a retained surgical sponge. The diagnosis of a textiloma was verified during surgical interv

Late Toxicities and Quality of Life After a Radiation Boost for Breast Ductal Carcinoma In Situ: Boost or No Boost in DCIS Randomized Trial.

PURPOSE: In ductal carcinoma in situ, whole breast radiation therapy (WBRT) reduces local recurrence rates, but ipsilateral breast events at 10 years were observed in 15% to 19% of 50-year-old patients. The BONBIS trial (NCT00907868) assessed the effect of an additional localized radiation boost on local recurrence-free survival (primary endpoint). METHODS AND MATERIALS: This large multicenter (n = 53), randomized, open-label phase 3 trial was conducted from November 2008 to July 2014. In total, 2004 patients with complete ductal carcinoma in situ resection underwent postsurgery WBRT followed

Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection of the Breast: A Unique Presentation of Underlying Invasive Breast Cancer.

Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are life-threatening infections that most commonly affect the extremities, perineum, and abdominal wall. These infections begin with the presence of toxin-producing bacteria that invade through a defect in the skin barrier, such as a wound, laceration, trauma, or recent surgical incision. These bacteria cause subsequent tissue destruction and necrosis that can involve the superficial skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia, and/or muscle. NSTIs can progress quickly, leading to severe sepsis, shock, and even death. NSTIs associated with the breast are an exc

Injectable ROS/pH-Responsive Hydrogel for Synergistic Chemo-Photodynamic Tumor Therapy and Enhanced Wound Healing.

Conventional cancer treatments often result in tissue loss, incomplete tumor excision, infections, and systemic toxicity, severely impacting patient recovery. These complications frequently involve excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and persistent inflammation, pathological features also characteristic of burn wounds and postoperative tumor sites. To address this, an injectable ROS/pH-responsive hydrogel integrating localized tumor therapy and wound healing is developed. The hydrogel is fabricated via Schiff base crosslinking of a thioketal-based ROS-cleavable linker with aldeh

Impact of exercise interventions on cardiotoxicity in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy: a study protocol for a quasi-randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Agents used in antitumour therapy have toxic effects on the cardiovascular system of breast cancer (BC) patients, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, which has become the most common non-cancer cause of death in BC patients. Exercise can effectively prevent or reduce the occurrence of cardiotoxicity, however, most BC patients have low levels of physical activity. The Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) model has been successfully applied to encourage patients to adhere to physical exercise. This study aims to explore the impact of exercise interventions based on the

Solving "T" Junction Wound Breakdown With a Single Tension-reducing Device.

Wound complications at the inverted "T" junction of a Wise pattern scar after breast reduction are common. These are minor complications of delayed healing that rarely require surgical revision. Nonetheless, these are problematic for patients and their surgeons, often resulting in additional encounters related to the care of the unhealed area. In this single-surgeon study, a tension-reducing device was added to the standard incisional closure regimen, and incisional healing was evaluated 6 weeks postoperatively by the surgeon. Two groups of 17 patients who underwent Wise pattern bilateral brea

BACKGROUND: Direct-to-implant (DTI) breast reconstruction often uses soft tissue support to improve outcomes and reduce implant migration. Synthetic meshes, such as TIGR Matrix, have emerged as potential alternatives to biological materials due to lower costs and complication rates. This study reviewed early outcomes using TIGR Matrix in immediate DTI reconstruction. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients who underwent implant-based reconstruction with TIGR Matrix between November 2023 and June 2024 across 2 institutions. Inclusion criteria included DTI reconstruction

The Use of Oxygen Therapy in Management of Mastectomy Flap Ischemia.

Oxygen plays a major role in wound healing by improving vessel growth and facilitating wound closure. Topical oxygen therapy has been widely accepted as a treatment for diabetic foot ulcers, but its benefit in compromised flaps and grafts in the field of plastic surgery has gained traction. It is possible to decrease flap necrosis and increase viability with topical oxygen therapy. We present a case of a 48-year-old woman who received topical oxygen therapy to treat postmastectomy areas of skin necrosis. As the patient underwent treatment using topical oxygen therapy to the mastectomy flaps, s
