Traumatic spinal injuries in a rural tourist area: Epidemiology, seasonal trends and implications for healthcare resource allocation.

PURPOSE: Several epidemiological studies have evaluated trends and epidemiology of Traumatic Spinal Injury (TSI) but often they don't take into account the geographical variability of nations. Having identified a lack of literature on the epidemiology of rural and touristic areas we conducted this retrospective study in our hospital near Como Lake to understand how best to manage TSI patients. METHODS: This retrospective epidemiological study included all patients with TSI admitted to Emergency Department (ED) of Gravedona ed Uniti Hospital between April 2018 and March 2024. We focused on ver

Association of preoperative vertebral kyphosis and other factors with cement leakage after percutaneous kyphoplasty: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) is an established treatment modality for painful vertebral compression fractures; however, cement leakage remains its most frequent complication. Although factors such as cortical disruption and fracture type have been widely studied, the influence of preoperative sagittal deformity on leakage risk remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between preoperative vertebral kyphosis and cement leakage after PKP, with particular attention to CT-based bone quality. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent PKP for thor

Four-level pedicle subtraction osteotomy for severe rigid thoracic hyperkyphosis: a technical case report.

STUDY DESIGN: Technical case report. INTRODUCTION: Severe thoracic hyperkyphosis caused by multiple osteoporotic fractures can lead to significant disability. When deformities are rigid, surgical correction may be required. This report describes a rare case of four-level pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) to address a fixed deformity, with focus on technique, outcomes, and complications. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old female with Scheuermann's disease developed progressive thoracic hyperkyphosis due to osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Radiographs showed a rigid kyphosis of 130.3°. Is the pelvis "organ protective" in pelvic and spine trauma? A database study of spine and pelvic combination injuries.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic spine fractures often occur with multisystem injuries. Pelvic and transverse process (TP) fractures have been linked to visceral trauma, but whether the pelvis behaves as an "organ protective" structure in spine injury is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine how concomitant pelvic fractures and TP fracture burden influence visceral injury patterns in patients with spinal fractures. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included adult trauma patients with CT-confirmed spinal fractures at a single Level I trauma center (2015-2023). Patients were grouped into spine-only or spine-

Emergency radiology of severe acute injury in extreme alpine summer sports: a pictorial essay.

Extreme alpine summer sports are increasingly popular and expose participants to high-energy trauma in remote mountain environments. This pictorial essay reviews the emergency radiology of severe acute injuries associated with down-hill mountain biking, rock climbing, paragliding, BASE jumping, canyoning, and rafting, with emphasis on mechanism-based imaging interpretation. Injury patterns differ across disciplines but are largely determined by velocity, fall height, landing posture, impact surface, axial loading, torsional forces, and water-related hazards. Down-hill mountain biking commonly

CPR-induced vertebral fractures: a case report and systematic review of literature.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a critical intervention for cardiac arrest, but its forceful chest compressions can lead to skeletal injuries, including rare vertebral fractures CASE PRESENTATION: This case report details a 78-year-old woman with a history of cardiac surgery and obesity who suffered a fatal cardiac arrest due to a DeBakey type II aortic dissection. Despite 30 minutes of advanced manual CPR, she succumbed to cardiogenic shock. Autopsy revealed an incidental transvertebral fracture of the 8th thoracic vertebra alongside multiple bilateral rib fractures, with no evidence of pre-

Clinical features, diagnostic imaging findings, treatment, and outcome of a cat with C4 vertebral fracture and concomitant tracheal rupture.

BACKGROUND: Vertebral fractures are relatively common in cats, affecting the thoracic or lumbar spine more frequently than the cervical region. Patient history and clinical signs at presentation often guide the initial diagnostic suspicion; however, advanced imaging techniques are usually essential for establishing a definitive diagnosis. The management of these cases is often complex, and not all patients require surgical intervention. When surgery is indicated, the primary goal is to decompress the spinal cord and prevent further secondary injury. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old female domes

Outcomes of stereotactic radiosurgery for spine multiple myeloma-a systematic review.

Spinal involvement in multiple myeloma (MM) commonly results in pain, vertebral instability, epidural spinal cord compression, and neurological deficits. Although conventional external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) remains the standard radiation modality because of the radiosensitive nature of MM, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has emerged as a highly conformal treatment option capable of delivering focal high-dose radiation while sparing adjacent spinal cord structures and uninvolved bone marrow. This systematic review evaluated the clinical outcomes and safety profile of SRS for spinal MM.

Relationship between Preoperative Adjacent Disc Height and the Occurrence of Adjacent Vertebral Body Fractures after Balloon Kyphoplasty for Osteoporotic Fractures at the Thoracolumbar Junction.

Adjacent vertebral fractures after balloon kyphoplasty are speculated to occur in association with increased mechanical pressure due to rigid cement-augmented vertebrae. This study aimed to clarify whether adjacent vertebral fractures are more likely to occur after balloon kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral fractures when the intervening adjacent disc degeneration is advanced. We retrospectively reviewed the findings for 99 patients who underwent balloon kyphoplasty for the first-ever osteoporotic vertebral fracture at the thoracolumbar junction levels (T11-L2). Radiological parameters and

Endovascular treatment of a blunt thoracic aortic injury in adolescents: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Blunt thoracic aortic injury (BTAI) in adolescents is a rare but life-threatening condition associated with a high mortality rate. Patients with BTAI often present with multiple severe injuries, which can complicate the use of traditional surgical approaches. While thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has become a standard treatment for traumatic aortic injuries in adults, its application in pediatric cases remains relatively uncommon and is primarily supported by limited case reports. Furthermore, medium- and long-term follow-up data are lacking. We report the case of a 16-

Advantages of TiRobot-assisted surgery in the treatment of osteoporotic thoracolumbar compression fractures: a meta-analysis based on multiple clinical indicators.

This study aims to systematically assess the therapeutic effectiveness of TiRobot-assisted percutaneous kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty in managing osteoporotic thoracolumbar compression fractures. Previous studies have suggested that TiRobot-assisted techniques outperform conventional manual procedures in treating this condition, but relevant conclusions remain controversial. A thorough literature retrieval was carried out across 4 major databases: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. The final search was completed on July 20, 2025. After applying specific inclusion and exc

Robot-Assisted, Conventional Fluoroscopy (C-Arm), O-Arm Navigation, and Freehand Pedicle Screw Fixation in Thoracolumbar Spine Fracture Surgery: A Network Meta-Analysis.

Thoracolumbar fractures are a prevalent clinical disease, with several surgical techniques, including traditional freehand pedicle screw fixation (TFPSF), conventional fluoroscopy (C-arm) percutaneous pedicle screw fixation (CPPSF), O-arm-assisted percutaneous pedicle screw fixation (OPPSF), and robot-assisted percutaneous pedicle screw fixation (RPPSF), being currently applied. However, a comprehensive comparison of their relative efficacy across multiple perioperative and functional outcomes is lacking, leading to uncertainty in optimal technique selection. Clinical and Radiographic Characteristics of Vertebral Fracture with Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis.

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH)-related fractures have a high frequency of delayed diagnosis and paralysis even if caused by low-energy trauma, which makes diagnosing vertebral fractures (VFs) with DISH challenging. This study compared the clinical and radiologic features of VFs with DISH. METHODS: This study included 252 patients (70 men and 182 women; mean age±standard deviation, 81.0±8.6 years) with VFs in this study. Patients were divided into two groups depending on DISH (group D) or not (group N). We measured the sex, age, body mass index, hemoglobin A1c, a
