A Unique Patient Presentation of Disseminated Strongyloidiasis: Unraveling the Clinical Complexity of an Immunocompromised Patient.

Strongyloidiasis is a rare parasitic disease that can remain dormant and asymptomatic in many individuals. However, in cases of immunosuppression, the motility rate of the Strongyloides parasite increases significantly. This case study presents a unique clinical scenario involving an 88-year-old Hispanic male with a disseminated Strongyloidesinfection. The patient's medical history includes coronary artery disease, a history of percutaneous coronary intervention, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and subsequent recovery of left ventricular function, hypertension, dyslipidemia, mantl

Strongyloides stercoralis Infection in Humans: A Narrative Review of the Most Neglected Parasitic Disease.

Strongyloidiasis is a helminth infection affecting 613.9 million people annually, mainly in the tropics and subtropics. The reported seroprevalence in the United States is 4% with most of the cases reported in immigrants. Human T-lympho-tropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) infections, hypogammaglobulinemia, immunosuppressant use - particularly steroid use, alcoholism, and malnutrition have been associated with an increased risk of strongyloidiasis. Recently, cases of strongyloidiasis hyperinfection syndrome have been described in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients treated with steroids as well. T

New Perspectives about Drug Candidates Targeting HTLV-1 and Related Diseases.

Among the human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) types, HTLV-1 is the most prevalent, and it has been linked to a spectrum of diseases, including HAM/TSP, ATLL, and hyperinfection syndrome or disseminated strongyloidiasis. There is currently no globally standard first-line treatment for HTLV-1 infection and its related diseases. To address this, a comprehensive review was conducted, analyzing 30 recent papers from databases PubMed, CAPES journals, and the Virtual Health Library (VHL). The studies encompassed a wide range of therapeutic approaches, including antiretrovirals, immunomodulators, antine

Improved diagnostic sensitivity of human strongyloidiasis using point-of-care mixed recombinant antigen-based immunochromatography.

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease that can cause fatal complications due to hyperinfection and disseminated strongyloidiasis in immunocompromised patients. We used two Strongyloides stercoralis recombinant antigenic proteins, L3NieAg.01 (NIE) and IgG-immunoreactive antigen (SsIR), to develop the recombinant antigen-based immunochromatography test (ICT) kit. We constructed and compared kits using either the NIE (NIE ICT kit) or the SsIR (SsIR ICT kit) antigens and a kit using a mixture of both (NIE-SsIR ICT kit) for detection of anti-Strongyloides IgG antibody in human serum samp

Strongyloides spp. and Cytomegalovirus Co-Infection in Patient Affected by Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

To our knowledge, we have described the first case of Strongyloides/Cytomegalovirus (CMV) concomitant infection that occurred in a European country. The patient was a 76-year-old woman affected by relapsed non-Hodgkin lymphoma who presented interstitial pneumonia with a rapidly progressive worsening of respiratory insufficiency, leading to cardiac dysfunction and consequent death. CMV reactivation is a common complication in immunocompromised patients, while hyperinfection/disseminated strongyloidiasis (HS/DS) is rare in low endemic regions, but has been widely described in Southeast Asia and

Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 and Strongyloides stercoralis Co-infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) overlaps with that of Strongyloides stercoralis. Strongyloides stercoralis infection has been reported to be impacted by co-infection with HTLV-1. Disseminated strongyloidiasis and hyperinfection syndrome, which are commonly fatal, are observed in HTLV-1 co-infected patients. Reduced efficacy of anti-strongyloidiasis treatment in HTLV-1 carriers has been reported. The aim of this meta-analysis and systematic review is to better understand the association between HTLV-1 and S. stercoralis infection. METHODS: PubMed

Identification of miRNAs of Strongyloides stercoralis L1 and iL3 larvae isolated from human stool.

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the soil-transmitted nematode by Strongyloides stercoralis, that affects approximately 600 million people worldwide. In immunosuppressed individuals disseminated strongyloidiasis can rapidly lead to fatal outcomes. There is no gold standard for diagnosing strongyloidiasis, and infections are frequently misdiagnosed. A better understanding of the molecular biology of this parasite can be useful for example for the discovery of potential new biomarkers. Interestingly, recent evidence showed the presence of small RNAs in Strongyloididae,

Disseminated strongyloidiasis after prolonged treatment with corticosteroids.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a helminth found in the soil and transmitted to humans through larval penetration of the skin. It is endemic across most of the tropical regions of the world. Infection with S. stercoralis commonly causes minimal or mild symptoms. This case report describes an interesting final diagnosis for a woman presenting with persistent nausea, vomiting and epigastric pain. Her evaluation included imaging and oesophagogastroduodenoscopy with biopsy. Her biopsy results revealed oesophageal candidiasis and disseminated strongyloidiasis. Important historical clues in this case i

Strongyloides stercoralis prevalence in solid-organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplant candidates and recipients: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal helminth ubiquitous in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It persists in the human host for a lifetime as a result of autoinfection and if undetected and untreated, can lead to increased morbidity and high mortality in immunocompromised individuals such as the transplant population. Transplant patients, including solid-organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplants (SOT and HSCT, respectively), are at a high risk of hyperinfection and disseminated strongyloidiasis. Unfortunately screening is often not systematically performed. P

Disseminated strongyloidiasis in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis is usually a chronic infection but it can develop into a fatal disease in immunosuppressed patients. CASE SUMMARY: A 68-year-old male with rheumatoid arthritis was treated with a variety of immunosuppressants for the past 3 years. Recently, the patient presented with a partial small-bowel obstruction, petechia, coughing and peripheral neuropathy. The diagnosis was difficult to clarify in other hospitals. Our hospital found Strongyloides stercoralis larvae with active movement in the routine stool and sputum smears. The diagnosis of disseminated strongyloidiasis wa

Strongyloides stercoralis: A Neglected but Fatal Parasite.

Strongyloidiasis is a disease caused by Strongyloides stercoralis and remains a neglected tropical infection despite significant public health concerns. Challenges in the management of strongyloidiasis arise from wide ranging clinical presentations, lack of practical high sensitivity diagnostic tests, and a fatal outcome in immunocompromised hosts. Migration, globalization, and increased administration of immunomodulators, particularly during the COVID-19 era, have amplified the global impact of strongyloidiasis. Here, we comprehensively review the diagnostic tests, clinical manifestations, an

Seroprevalence of Strongyloides infection among steroid recipients in a tertiary care centre in North India.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis), a unique parasite, can cause mortal disease even years after the exposure. Iatrogenic use of steroids can complicate asymptomatic infections to a life-threatening hyperinfection and/or disseminated infection. Data regarding seroprevalence of strongyloidiasis remains scarce and this knowledge gap needs due attention in many endemic countries including India. AIM: The present study is aimed at assessing the seroprevalence of Strongyloides infection and the need for routine screening among individuals receiving steroid therapy. METHODOLOGY

Diagnostic value of metagenomics next-generation sequencing technology in disseminated strongyloidiasis.

The symptoms of disseminated strongyloidiasis are not typical, and it is difficult for clinicians to identify strongyloidiasis in some non-endemic areas. Parasitic larvae in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in a non-immunocompromised patient.

Strongyloides stercoralis is responsible for a significant human parasitic infection known as strongyloidiasis. In addition, pulmonary strongyloidiasis is one of the most critical signs of disseminated strongyloidiasis. In this instance, S. stercoralis was unexpectedly discovered in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

Larva Currens: Report of Seven Cases and Literature Review.

Strongyloidiasis is a frequent and often unrecognized parasitic disease because of the frequently asymptomatic nature and lack of sensitivity of diagnostic tests. Under conditions of immunosuppression (particularly systemic corticosteroid treatment), potentially fatal dissemination may occur. Thus, prevention and early diagnosis are important. Larva currens is a rare and pathognomonic cutaneous sign of strongyloidiasis, but is poorly described because of its unpredictable and fleeting occurrence. We report seven imported cases of larva currens seen in Paris between 1990 and 2020. We illustrate
