Experts recommend screening for or presumptively treating strongyloidiasis in foreign-born immigrant children, though prevalence is unknown. Health care providers encounter barriers to following this recommendation. We aimed to describe Strongyloides seropositivity and risk factors among pediatric patients on a mobile clinic. Participants completed a written survey and provided blood for absolute eosinophil count (AEC) and Strongyloides IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). From October 2022 to June 2023, 206 patients participated; 201 (97.6%) were born outside the United States; 97.1

Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome, caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, is a life-threatening condition with a high mortality rate. This case report describes a 76-year-old woman who developed hyperinfection syndrome with gastrointestinal- and pulmonary symptoms shortly after her first round of chemotherapy for stage IV diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Despite her advanced age and frailty, she survived both the severe parasite infection and the two-month hospital stay, in addition to managing the challenges posed by the advanced-stage lymphoma.

Strongyloides stercoralis (Ss) is a parasitic infection affecting 50-100 million people globally, with significant immune and metabolic consequences, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. While Strongyloides infection is known to modulate the host immune system, the role of angiopoietin-like proteins (AGPTLs), which regulate inflammation and immune responses, has not been explored in this context. In this study, we investigated the systemic levels of AGPTL-2, -3, -4, -6, and -8 in 60 Ss-infected (Ss+) and 56 uninfected (Ss-) individuals. AGPTL levels were quantified using enzyme-linke

BACKGROUND: Skin-penetrating nematodes, including the human parasite Strongyloides stercoralis and the rat parasite Strongyloides ratti, are gastrointestinal parasites that infect when infective third-stage larvae (iL3s) invade host skin. To enter the skin, iL3s engage in skin-penetration behavior, in which they repeatedly push and puncture the skin surface before ultimately burrowing into the skin. These parasites have narrow host ranges, but the extent to which skin-penetration behavior contributes to host specificity remains unclear. Here, we examine the behavior of S. stercoralis and S. ra

Strongyloidiasis remains a neglected tropical disease associated with significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in Khuzestan Province, Iran, due to its autoinfection cycle and serious threat to immunocompromised patients. Despite efforts to control soil-transmitted helminths, Strongyloides stercoralis remains prevalent, with many chronic cases remaining undiagnosed. In the current study, risk factors, clinical manifestations, and laboratory markers in confirmed cases were compared with those in uninfected individuals, as well as those suspected of being infected. A retrospective analys

Strongyloides ratti is an intestinal nematode commonly found in rats. Unlike other Strongyloides species, the tissue-migrating third-stage larvae in S. ratti follow a unique route of invasion via the nasofrontal region before reaching the gut. Despite its importance in host invasion, the transcriptomic profile of this larval stage has not been characterized. In this study, we performed RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to examine gene expression in head-derived tissue-migrating third-stage larvae (hL3) and infective third-stage larvae (iL3) of the S. ratti Tokyo strain. hL3 were collected from rat head

BACKGROUND: Migration phenomena from low- to high-income countries have been constantly increasing in the past years, and migrants living with HIV (MLHIVs) currently represent a non-negligible proportion of the population living with HIV in the European setting. When taken into care, MLHIVs should be screened for tropical diseases capable of asymptomatically persisting for years and leading to severe and/or chronic complications, especially in immunocompromised populations.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study aimed at analyzing the screening ratios and seroprevalences of strongyloidia

This case describes a 62-year-old male who underwent kidney transplantation and was admitted 8 weeks post-operatively for evaluation and management of abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. An extensive workup was performed, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome. This case highlights the importance of awareness of strongyloidiasis in non-endemic regions, management of Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome in the post-transplant setting, and strategies for donor and recipient screening.

Strongyloidiasis caused by Strongyloides papillosus is a significant parasitic disease affecting the health and productivity of small ruminants globally. In this study, a novel recombinase-aided amplification (RAA) combined with lateral flow dipstick (LFD) assay was developed and validated for the rapid and specific detection of S. papillosus infection in goats and sheep, targeting the 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene. A total of 815 fecal samples were collected from nine provinces in China, encompassing major goats and sheep production regions. The RAA-LFD assay exhibited high sensitivity, w

Macrophages execute host defense against pathogens by releasing extracellular traps (METs) composed of DNA meshwork and antimicrobial proteins. Although MET-mediated pathogen immobilization is well documented, the induction mechanisms of MET generation by helminth parasites remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate that Strongyloides stercoralis larvae induce rapid chromatin extrusion in murine macrophages. Unlike neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation, MET formation does not require NADPH oxidase and exhibits distinct ultrastructural characteristics, including endoplasmic reticulum vesicula

BACKGROUND: Nucleic acid amplification tests have shown promising results for the diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminths (STH). The implementation of real-time PCR (qPCR) in low-resource settings is, however, still hampered by multiple logistical challenges. In this study, we assessed the diagnostic performance of a cartridge-based real-time PCR system (diaxxoPCR) for the detection of DNA of Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, and Strongyloides stercoralis in clinical samples, using qPCR as the reference test.
METHODOLOGY: Initially, a technical validation of the diaxxoPCR system in a

Strongyloides stercoralis, a soil-transmitted parasitic helminth, poses significant health risks for various species, including humans and canines. Despite previously being considered rare in Australia, recent findings indicate a higher than anticipated prevalence, suggesting it might be an underdiagnosed issue nationwide. This case report details a deceased 23-week-old female Boston Terrier that presented with severe gastrointestinal signs and died, despite intensive veterinary care. Subsequent histopathological and parasitological examinations confirmed a significant infestation of S. sterco

Strongyloides stercoralis infection affects approximately 600 million individuals worldwide. This parasite has the ability to exacerbate infection through internal autoinfection, which can lead to hyperinfection and/or dissemination, conditions associated with high morbidity and mortality, particularly in immunocompromised patients such as those with alcohol use disorder (AUD). In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the prevalence and risk of having S. stercoralis infection among individuals with AUD. Searches were performed in the PubMed, Embase, and LILACS databases to identif

OBJECTIVES: Parasitic colitis is highly prevalent worldwide, may mimic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and is encountered by non-specialist physicians in high-income, non-endemic settings. In this context, patients may be at risk of misdiagnosis and poor outcomes. However, cases are not routinely reported, limiting the evidence base to individual case reports. We aimed to systematically describe and evaluate the diagnosis, clinical course and outcomes of affected patients whose cases have been reported in high-income settings.
DESIGN: A systematic review of the literature using the Preferred

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) affect more than 1 billion people worldwide. Due to the morbidity in children caused by the accumulation of infections with these parasites, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed deworming programs to reduce worm burden, providing guidelines for Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms, since they are diagnosed and treated using the same tools. Recently, the WHO has provided guidelines for Strongyloides stercoralis, given it requires specific tools for diagnosis and treatment, with the goal to reduce prevalence and encourage

Knowledge of tropical parasitic infections, such as Strongyloides stercoralis, remains essential given increased migration from endemic areas and rising international travel. S. stercoralis can persist silently for decades and cause severe disease upon reactivation. We describe two illustrative cases. A 86-year-old former tropical physician developed eosinophilic pneumonia, skin lesions, and sensory ataxia. Symptoms persisted despite corticosteroid therapy but resolved rapidly after empirical ivermectin. In contrast, a 57-year-old Liberian man with prior immunosuppression presented with hyperi

Long-term changes in weather conditions on Earth have a significant impact on the world around us. These include not only increasingly extreme weather events such as droughts and heatwaves. These effects can be felt throughout the natural environment, influencing the spread of parasites and the diseases they transmit. Climate change can alter the range and life cycles of parasites, and accelerate and lengthen the activity period of vectors. Four species are described in this manuscript: Balamuthia mandrillaris, Naegleria fowleri, Trypanosoma cruzi and Strongyloides stercoralis. Balamuthia mand
