Occupational exposure remains a major driver of parasitic infections in India, largely due to caste-based discrimination that severely limits job opportunities for certain communities. Historically marginalized groups, particularly Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), often have little choice but to engage in high-risk occupations such as manual scavenging, landless farming, inland and coastal fishing, tea-estate labor, informal mining, and backyard pig-rearing. Passed down through generations of exploitation, these occupations typically involve minimal or no personal protective eq

Strongyloidiasis, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, is a neglected disease with a worldwide prevalence, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Most people have chronic asymptomatic infections, which may transform into potentially fatal hyper- or disseminated infections when immunosuppressed. Cancer patients on corticosteroids are at an increased risk of developing severe forms of the infection due to their impaired immune status. The present study used molecular, serological, and parasitological methods to detect S. stercoralis infection in cancer patients on corticosteroids. Usi

Infection with the soil-transmitted helminth Strongyloides stercoralis is typically asymptomatic but can result in life-threatening hyperinfection syndrome in immunocompromised individuals. To improve serological tests for strongyloidiasis, we evaluated the Ss-IR antigen using a multiplex bead assay and compared this assay to the commonly used Ss-NIE antigen. We assessed assay sensitivity and specificity using the following serum panels: sera from United States-bound refugees (57 positive stool polymerase chain reaction [PCR], 88 negative PCR) departing from Thailand-Burma border camps (panel

The infection burden of Strongyloides stercoralis in India remains poorly defined. We aimed to estimate the burden of S. stercoralis infection among immunocompromised patients at our tertiary care hospital in north India and evaluated the performance of multiple diagnostic tests. Paired stool and blood samples were collected from 498 immunosuppressed individuals. Screening included stool microscopy without concentration, Baermann's funnel method, Agar plate and Harada Mori cultures, 18S ribosomal RNA gene real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and anti-Strongyloides IgG antibody ELISA.

Increased enterocyte turnover, microbial translocation, and systemic inflammation have been demonstrated to serve as predictors of morbidity and mortality in people with HIV (PWH) receiving antiretroviral therapy. Both HIV and intestinal parasitic infections cause gut damage and increased microbial translocation. A prospective cohort study of foreign-born PWH with undetectable HIV RNA (<20 copies/mL) with and without intestinal parasitic coinfection was conducted. Biomarkers of enterocyte turnover (intestinal fatty acid binding protein [IFABP]), microbial translocation (soluble cluster of diff

Microbial translocation drives chronic immune activation that is linked to HIV disease progression. Invasive parasitic gut nematodes induce microbial translocation and downregulate the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. We evaluated the impact of albendazole anthelmintic therapy on serum markers of microbial translocation and inflammation among helminth-infected Ugandans living with HIV. Participants were randomized to an immediate or delayed 400 mg of daily albendazole and followed for 1 month. Baseline stool analysis, conducted via multiparallel real-time quantitative polymerase chain

Human sexuality is a complex dynamic concept that escapes simple definition. Within nursing there seems to be a preference for broad holistic definitions that emphasize sexuality as an aspect of the unique human character. Whilst the nursing literature mostly portrays sexuality as wholesome and good, it also notes that sexuality can be a vehicle for the expression of power, hostility or hatred. In this study, the authors did not prescribe or limit the definition of 'sexuality'. Rather the term 'sexuality' was used in a broad sense in order to embrace the range of variables within the concept a

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a viral infection affecting 71 million people worldwide. A high prevalence of co-infection has been observed with parasitic infections, such as Schistosoma mansoni, Fasciola sp., and Toxoplasma gondii, all of which can contribute to the progression of liver disease. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of co-parasitic infections with HCV-positive individuals within Egyptian populations and the resulting biochemical changes in liver and kidney biomarkers.

There is a paucity of consensus regarding the occurrence of reproductive disorders after the utilization of antimalarial. The objective of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of an established pharmaceutical agent (Amatem) and a traditional herbal remedy (Mangifera indica), which is commonly utilized for the treatment of malaria, with respect to their impact on male reproductive hormones. The primary research question guiding this study was to ascertain which of these agents would offer protection against adverse effects on reproductive parameters. The present study utilized a sam

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death, with strong environmental associations and genetic risk factors. Although some microorganisms have been linked to carcinogenesis in CRC, the prevalence of parasites and their potential role in carcinogenesis remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and association of the parasites Blastocystis, Cryptosporidium, and Strongyloides in CRC.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted, including 120 participants, divided into 60 patients with CRC and 60 healthy controls. Patient

Invasive fungal sinusitis is a life-threatening form of fungal rhinosinusitis. Due to the aggressive clinical presentation and radiological appearance, there is diagnostic difficulty in differentiating invasive fungal sinusitis from a malignant process. This is even more challenging in oncological patients who have undergone previous head and neck radiotherapy, due to possibility of a recurrence of primary malignancy and radiation-induced neoplasms. We report a rare case of invasive fungal sinusitis mimicking a malignancy in a post-radiotherapy patient. Our patient was a 68-year-old male, 25-y

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are common. Indeed, more than 1 billion people are affected, mainly in the developing world where poverty prevails and hygiene behavior, water supply, and sanitation are often deficient. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and the two hookworm species, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus, are the most prevalent STHs. The estimated global burden due to hookworm disease, ascariasis, and trichuriasis is 22.1, 10.5, and 6.4 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), respectively. Furthermore, an estimated 30-100 million people are inf

BACKGROUND: The risk of developing strongyloidiasis hyperinfection syndrome appears to be elevated among individuals who initiate corticosteroid treatment. Presumptive treatment or treatment after screening for populations from Strongyloides stercoralis-endemic areas has been suggested before initiating corticosteroids. However, potential clinical and economic impacts of preventative strategies have not been evaluated.
METHODS: Using a decision tree model for a hypothetical cohort of 1000 individuals from S. stercoralis-endemic areas globally initiating corticosteroid treatment, we evaluated

Canine strongyloidosis by Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasitic disease emerging in Europe, which represents both a veterinary clinical issue and a public health challenge because of the zoonotic potential. The disease, not yet frequent in Europe, could induce severe clinical signs in dogs; thus, an early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are desirable. The aim of the present work is to retrospectively investigate the clinical and paraclinical findings in sick dogs naturally infected by S. stercoralis, with particular attention to ultrasound (US) changes at the gastrointestinal level.
