Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic infection endemic to warm and moist climates, which is caused by the intestinal nematode Strongyloides stercoralis. In the United States, most cases are seen in immunocompromised patients residing in the Northeast and East South-Central regions and in travelers from endemic regions. While often underrecognized, Strongyloides infection should remain a key consideration in patients presenting with atypical gastrointestinal symptoms, with a relevant exposure history. We present a case of a 45-year-old male initially diagnosed with Helicobacter pylori whose symptoms

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) in stray dogs and cats, including hookworm infection, strongyloidiasis, and toxocariasis, are prevalent globally. The lack of STH control in these stray animals leads to an increased prevalence of STHs in southern Thailand. Suddenly, the El Niño 2014-2016 induced a 14-month-long drought. We thus aimed to compare the prevalence of STHs in stray cats in artificial wet sandy soil (unaffected area) and dry sandy soil (affected area) before and after drought. Furthermore, we also observed the prevalence of STHs in stray dogs in another study area be

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloides stercoralis is the main cause of human strongyloidiasis, but increasingly, presumably mostly zoonotic, human infections with S. fuelleborni are reported. Recently, a number of studies investigated the population structures, host specificities and zoonotic potentials of these two species, using molecular taxonomy. This is the first such study from Sri Lanka.
METHODS: We collected stool samples from humans, dogs and monkeys and used the Baermann after culture method to isolate individual live Strongyloides worms and determined parts of the cox-1 (mitochondrial) and t

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode with a unique autoinfective life cycle that enables decades-long persistence in the human host. Its gastrointestinal manifestations may resemble inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), creating a clinically important diagnostic pitfall. Misdiagnosis is particularly hazardous because corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive therapies may precipitate Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome or disseminated disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 52-year-old immunocompetent woman from northern Iran who presented with a 20-day history of pe

PURPOSE: Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the roundworm Strongyloides stercoralis. The prevalence of strongyloidiasis is higher in tropical and sub-tropical areas, there have been reports of infection in temperate regions. India is an endemic region for strongyloidiasis, however, there is extreme scarcity of molecular data related to S. stercoralis from this region.
METHODOLOGY: A cross sectional study was conducted in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, from July 2023 to January 2025. A total of 800 stool samples from patients were screened based on microscopy and confirmed th

Mycotic aortic aneurysms are rare, representing <5% of all aortic aneurysms with limited epidemiological data. To date, there are only three case reports on mycotic aneurysm with Klebsiella pneumoniae infection including one case of recurrent infection. There are no case reports on mycotic aortic aneurysm in the setting of a Strongyloides stercoralis coinfection, a helminth associated with intravascular dissemination of enteric bacteria. Although an open repair strategy is considered a gold standard for the treatment of these aneurysms, there is some consideration for endovascular strategies i

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected, potentially lifelong disease caused by Strongyloides stercoralis that can lead to a high mortality rate in immunocompromised hosts; therefore, it is necessary to increase the accuracy of infection diagnosis. In the current study, we used Wistar rats experimentally infected with different burdens of Strongyloides venezuelensis to characterize circulating leukocytes and IgM, IgG, IgG1, IgG2a, and IgA reactivity before and after anthelmintic treatment or immunosuppression. Infection, especially with 500 L3, induced an increase in circulating leukocytes, particular

We report the case of a 38-year-old woman with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection diagnosed in 2010 and on antiretroviral treatment since 2014, with an undetectable viral load and a CD4 lymphocyte count of 527 cells/µL. The patient presented with weight loss, fever, hyporexia, nausea, vomiting, progressive dyspnea, purpuric abdominal lesions, and lower extremity edema. During hospitalization, she developed hemoptysis and severe respiratory failure and died a few hours later. Parasitological studies of sputum and stool showed abundant Strongyloides stercoralis larvae, confirming disse

Prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections in Sri Lanka has declined from 73.3% in 1954 to <1% in 2017, leading to revised deworming policies and discontinuation of routine deworming in three districts, including Anuradhapura, in 2019. As countries approach elimination, this study assessed human intestinal nematode infection (HINI) prevalence in Anuradhapura, a low-endemic setting, using microscopic and molecular methods. From January to November 2023, 967 primary school children were recruited and screened for HINI using direct smears, Kato-Katz, formalin ether concentration, ag

We present a case of symptomatic colonic strongyloidiasis diagnosed in an immunocompetent patient with chronic peripheral eosinophilia, with an absolute eosinophil count ranging from 0.71-1.47 × 10^3/µL since 2013. Initial evaluation for persistent eosinophilia, including random colon biopsies, demonstrated increased eosinophils and mast cells within the biopsy fragments. The patient was subsequently lost to follow-up. In December 2025, the patient presented to the emergency department with left lower quadrant abdominal pain and loose bowel movements. Computed tomography demonstrated diffuse b

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection carries near-universal mortality if untreated. We present a 52-year-old man from Central America with advanced HIV (CD4 196 cells/μL) who presented with chronic diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss. Cross-sectional imaging revealed small bowel thickening. Endoscopy demonstrated gastric and duodenal mucosal friability and ulceration. His course was complicated by polymicrobial Gram-negative bacteremia and meningitis. Retrospective identification of antecedent eosinophilia prompted suspicion for Strongyloides, confirmed on intestinal biopsies. The patient

We report a case of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in an Ethiopian female refugee with advanced, untreated HIV who presented with weight loss, dysphagia, gastrointestinal bleeding, and pancytopenia. Duodenal and colonic biopsies confirmed the diagnosis, and the patient was successfully treated with oral ivermectin and initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), with full symptom resolution at follow-up. This case underscores the importance of maintaining a high clinical suspicion for strongyloidiasis in immunocompromised refugees from endemic regions, even when classic markers such as eos

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) is a neglected tropical disease that can be fatal in immunocompromised hosts. Diagnosis is challenging due to nonspecific clinical manifestations and low sensitivity of conventional stool examination. Patients with autoimmune diseases receiving long-term glucocorticoid therapy are at high risk of hyperinfection syndrome, which can rapidly progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Despite a significant population of migrants from endemic countries and of Europeans traveling to these regions, no Belgian study and few European studies have reported on strongyloidiasis. This retrospective study, conducted between January 2012 and December 2021, aimed to compare demographic data, clinical characteristics and management appropriateness of adult patients from Hôpital Universitaire de Bruxelles-Erasme and Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Saint-Pierre who had a positive serology for Strongyloides stercoralis. Serology results were classified as weakly positive (WP) or positive

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted intestinal nematode capable of establishing chronic autoinfection, allowing infection to persist for decades. Its nonspecific clinical manifestations and variable presentation often result in delayed diagnosis, particularly in older adults and in endemic regions, where unrecognized infection may progress to severe complications.
CASE REPORT: A 78-year-old man presented with progressive bilateral lower-extremity edema lasting four months, accompanied by functional class II dyspnea, fever, chills, night sweats, nausea, lethargy, and an

BACKGROUND: Data about pediatric strongyloidiasis are scarce in our setting.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter registry of cases of pediatric strongyloidiasis in Spain.
RESULTS: Among 138 cases, 76% were travelers/migrants. Overall, 32% were symptomatic, and 35% had eosinophilia (higher in symptomatic patients, P < 0.05). Confirmed diagnosis occurred in 10% (stool polymerase chain reaction), while 90% were probable (serology). Ivermectin was the first therapy (98%). Adequate follow-up after treatment was achieved in only 36%.
CONCLUSIONS: One-fourth of cases were authochthon

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis pulmonary hyperinfection syndrome (SPHS) is a rare, frequently fatal complication of strongyloidiasis that is difficult to recognize because of its nonspecific multisystem manifestations. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion.
METHODS: This retrospective study identified 29 hospitalized patients with strongyloidiasis at Chaozhou Central Hospital between November 2018 and January 2026. We compared the clinical data of five patients with SPHS (SPHS group) and 21 patients with uncomplicated/chronic strongyloidiasis (non-SPHS group) and described the d

BACKGROUND: European cities are placing a larger emphasis on urban data consolidation and analysis for optimizing public transport in response to changing urban mobility dynamics. Despite the existing efforts, traffic data analysis often disregards vital situational context, including large-scale events, weather factors, traffic generation poles, social distancing norms, or traffic interdictions. Some of these sources of context data are still private, dispersed, or unavailable for the purpose of planning or managing urban mobility. Addressing the above observation, the Lisbon city Council has
