Prevalence of Strongyloides sp. and Nippostrongylus sp. in small mammals, Malaysia.

Parasitic nematodes remain important zoonotic pathogens, particularly in tropical regions where human-animal interactions facilitate pathogen transmission. This study investigated the prevalence and genetic characteristics of Strongyloides sp. and Nippostrongylus sp. among non-volant small mammals in Peninsular Malaysia during 2025-2026. A total of 46 small mammals, comprising 28 rats (Rattus spp.) and 18 treeshrews (Tupaia spp.), were screened using PCR targeting the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) gene. Nippostrongylus sp. was detected in 25.0% (7/28) of rats but was absent in treeshre

Case Report: From chronic infection to disseminated strongyloidiasis: a case of corticosteroid-induced hyperinfection syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) is a soil-transmitted nematode predominantly endemic to tropical and subtropical regions, capable of causing life-threatening hyperinfection syndrome and disseminated infection in immunocompromised individuals. With the improvement of sanitation conditions, strongyloidiasis has become increasingly uncommon. Early-stage infection presents with mild, nonspecific symptoms, posing diagnostic challenges. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of S. stercoralis infection in a 73-year-old female patient, evolving from initial erythematous rash to di

A case of severe strongyloidiasis complicating immunosuppressive therapy initiated for IgA vasculitis.

IgA vasculitis (IgAV) and Strongyloides stercoralis infection may both present with abdominal pain and purpura; however, glucocorticoid, the treatment for IgAV, is a major risk factor for S. stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome and disseminated strongyloidiasis. To date, only 2 cases of IgAV with concurrent S. stercoralis infection have been reported globally, both in children. We report a 72-year-old man presenting with abdominal pain and purpura. Diagnosed with IgAV during this admission, he received glucocorticoid therapy. However, the patient's condition did not improve as expected. Subsequ

Routine stool microscopy unmasking strongyloidiasis: a case report from Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Strongyloidiasis is an intestinal parasitic disease caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, a soil-transmitted nematode. It is a common infection in Southeast Asia, including India, and is related to poor sanitation, rural residence, barefoot walking, and occupational exposure to soil. We report a case of a 71-year-old male farmer from rural Gorakhpur, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, who presented with intermittent watery diarrhoea for 2 years and tenesmus for 15 days. He was admitted with a diagnosis of fever of unknown origin. Routine stool microscopy revealed motile rhabditiform larvae of Strongyloides

Recent advances in Strongyloides screening, diagnostics, therapeutics, and management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Strongyloidiasis affects an estimated 30-100 million people globally and can have life-threatening consequences in immunocompromised hosts, yet it remains underdiagnosed due to limited access and performance of available diagnostics. Novel assays and anthelmintics may reshape screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention for at-risk populations. RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in molecular diagnostics coupled with robust stool extraction methods have supplanted traditional parasitologic methods in settings where nucleic acid amplification is feasible. Transition from standard i

Intestinal Histomorphometric Alterations During Experimental Strongyloidiasis in Mice Treated with Rosmarinus officinalis Essential Oil.

PURPOSE: Strongyloidiasis is an intestinal helminthiasis that can induce structural alterations in the intestinal mucosa during infection. The present study evaluated histomorphometric alterations of the small intestine in mice experimentally infected with Strongyloides venezuelensis and treated with Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil. METHODS: Infected animals were treated orally with R. officinalis essential oil (200 or 400 mg/kg), ivermectin or control treatments. Histomorphometric parameters of the small intestine were evaluated, including villus height, epithelial height, crypt depth,

Strongyloides stercoralis Infection and Spirometry-Defined Airway Obstruction in Children with Sickle Cell Disease: A Species-Specific Multicentre Cross-Sectional Study in French Guiana.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Strongyloides stercoralis may persist through autoinfection and is clinically important before corticosteroid exposure, but its relationship with airway obstruction in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) is uncertain. We examined whether routine-detected S. stercoralis infection was associated with spirometry-defined airway obstruction in children with SCD in French Guiana. METHODS: This multicentre cross-sectional secondary analysis used an availability-based sample from a routine respiratory screening database. Eligible children aged 5-17 years had SCD, spirometry

A Survival Case of Pulmonary Hemorrhage Caused by Disseminated Strongyloidiasis in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can affect multiple organ systems, including the central nervous system, kidneys, and lungs. Pulmonary hemorrhage in SLE is a rare but serious complication that can lead to significant morbidity and mortality rates. We herein report a case of disseminated strongyloidiasis complicated by pulmonary hemorrhage in a patient with SLE. The interplay between immune system dysfunction in SLE and a parasitic infection with Strongyloides stercoralis may contribute to this unusual clinical presentation. Early recognition and managem

NIE Antigen Mapping for Serological Diagnostic of Strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease for which scalable serological diagnostics are essential to support control programmes. The Strongyloides stercoralis NIE antigen is widely used for antibody detection, but its antigenic determinants remain incompletely defined. Here, we performed epitope mapping of the NIE antigen using a panel of 23 overlapping 15-mer peptides and 4 bioinformatically predicted peptides. Immunoreactivity was evaluated by detecting IgG assay in sera from infected and noninfected individuals. Full-length NIE showed excellent diagnostic performance (AUC = 0.934),

Hidden risk: Corticosteroid exposure and severe outcomes in patients with latent Strongyloides stercoralis.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted helminth capable of lifelong persistence through autoinfection, placing individuals with latent infection at risk during immunosuppression. Although corticosteroids are recognized triggers for hyperinfection and dissemination, population-level data quantifying these risks remain limited. We conducted a multicentre retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network. Adults with laboratory-confirmed latent Strongyloides infection (positive IgG serology) were included, while patients with active disease were excluded. Corticos

Positive Strongyloides Serology: A Descriptive Analysis Across Geographically Distinct Academic Medical Centers.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal parasitic nematode that can infect humans with a 2%-7% prevalence in the United States. Immunosuppression is a crucial risk factor for disseminated infection. Diagnosis is often delayed and targeted treatment is frequently initiated late. We therefore sought to review the prevalence of positive Strongyloides antibody results and undertook a descriptive analysis of such patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with positive Strongyloides IgG serology from August 2012 to April 2023 across geographically distinct academic medi

Exploring an Infectious Disease Service Pathway for Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children: An Audit and Retrospective Analysis.

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) experience a high burden of infectious diseases (IDs) and are a highly vulnerable population group with significant mental, physical, social and developmental needs. However, currently in the United Kingdom, there is no framework regarding how to implement ID screening guidance for UASC, leading to a wide variation in outcomes. This project is aimed at exploring the ID pathway for UASC within a single South-East UK local authority, spanning two trusts-including one with a 'one-stop' clinic-to inform service improvement recommendations. The study was

INTRODUCTION: Essential precondition for the development of cervical cancer is a persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The majority - approximately 70% - of cervical carcinomas is caused by two high-risk HPV types (16 and 18). Recently, two vaccines have been approved to the German market with the potential to induce protection against HPV 16 and HPV 18 among additional low-risk virus types. OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether HPV vaccination is effective with regard to the reduction of cervical cancer and precursors of cervical carcinoma (CIN), respectively? Does HPV vaccination repres

Strongyloides hyperinfection complicated by invasive aspergillosis and osmotic demyelination syndrome.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode endemic in tropical and subtropical regions, capable of persisting for decades through an auto-infective life cycle. In immuno-compromised hosts, particularly those receiving corticosteroids, accelerated auto-infection can result in a hyperinfection syndrome characterised by massive larval proliferation, dissemination and life-threatening secondary bacterial or fungal infections. We report a known alcoholic with chronic steroid exposure who presented with pulmonary and gastrointestinal manifestations of hyperinfection, with larvae detected bo

Strongyloides stercoralis coinfection impairs immune control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in TB infected individuals.

BACKGROUND: Helminth co-infection are common in tuberculosis (TB) endemic regions and alter host immunity. However, their impact on immune responses in TB infection (TBI) remains incompletely defined. METHODS: We analyzed QuantiFERON (QFT) supernatants and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from TBI+Hel+ (S. stercoralis (Ss) infection) (n=15) and TBI+Hel- (n=23) individuals. Cytokine levels were assessed at baseline and following TB antigenic stimulation (TBAg1 and TBAg2), as well as mitogenic stimulation. PBMCs were stimulated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) H37Rv,

Strongyloides hyperinfection presenting with ulcerative duodenitis and septic shock in a steroid-treated patient.

Strongyloides stercoralis can cause chronic infections that may escalate into life-threatening hyperinfection, especially in immunocompromised patients. Severe intestinal strongyloidiasis has been associated with bacteraemia and sepsis, classically due to translocation of enteric organisms across a disrupted intestinal mucosal barrier. We report a patient with lepromatous leprosy on steroids who developed Strongyloides hyperinfection presenting with ulcerative duodenitis and septic shock.

Vector symbolic algebras for the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anorexia nervosa frequently feel ambivalent about treatment and weight restoration, and drop out and relapse rates in treatment are high. Increased insight into the function of the eating disorder is considered essential for achieving long-lasting, meaningful change. However, research investigating the functions of anorexia nervosa tends to focus on the role of the disease per se. Distinctions are rarely made across features. In particular, the subjective experience, understanding and sense making of the engagement in compulsive exercise in individuals with anorexi

INTRODUCTION: There is no consistent definition of burnout. It is neither a defined diagnosis in ICD-10 nor in DSM-IV. Yet it is diagnosed by office-based doctors and clinicians. Mainly due to reimbursement reasons, diagnoses like depression are used instead of burnout diagnoses. Therefore burnout has a very high individual, social and economic impact.
