Seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against measles in adolescents and adults from Metropolitan Lima and Callao, Peru, 2024-2025.

INTRODUCTION: The EndoFLIP (for its acronym in English: endoluminal functional luminal probe) is a system that measures in real time the compliance index of the gastroesophageal junction and secondary esophageal peristalsis, based on the principle of impedance planimetry. Although this technology is relatively new and its diagnostic usefulness is still being evaluated, its use in clinical practice is increasingly recognized, fundamentally in those patients where there is no conclusive manometric diagnosis of esophageal motor pathology, mainly esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction and ac

Lactoferrin concentration in breast milk during the first postpartum year in Lima Norte, Peru.

Bile duct injuries (BDI) tend to be more complex in laparoscopic than in open cholecystectomy procedures, and frequently involve young adults with benign pathologies. The ultimate consequence may be a liver transplantation (LT), making this situation one of the most rare transplant indications. Fatal post-transplant outcome is extreme infrequently reported. Aim of this study is to report on our single-case experience and to review the literature concerning lethal outcome after LT for major BDI following cholecystectomy. A 36-year old obese caucasian woman underwent a laparoscopic cholecystecto

Prolonged eosinophilia caused by Strongyloidiasis in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis treated with upadacitinib.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease, which is caused by dysregulation of the immune system in the 'susceptible' persons, making them immunocompromised and prone to infections during the course of their disease. The majority of RA patients are being treated with immunosuppressive drugs which render them even more immunocompromised. We present a Caucasian patient living in South-eastern Europe who developed prolonged eosinophilia during the treatment of RA with upadacitinib. After a comprehensive work-up, she was diagnosed with strongyloidiasis, although she was living in non-endemic

Alive Strongyloides stercoralis in biliary fluid in patient: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis), is a prevalent parasitic worm that infects humans. It is found all over the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas. Strongyloidiasis is caused mostly by the parasitic nematode S. stercoralis. Filariform larvae typically infest humans by coming into contact with dirt, such as by walking barefoot or through exposure to human waste or sewage. CASE SUMMARY: A 35-year-old male presented to our department with a 10-year history of abdominal pain and diarrhea, which had recently recurred for the past 3 months. A computed tomograp

Taenia crassiceps cysticerci antigenic extract controls Toxoplasma gondii proliferation in human trophoblast cells and upregulates IL-10 production.

Neglected tropical diseases caused by helminths such as strongyloidiasis and those caused by protozoa such as toxoplasmosis are public health problems, especially in poorer countries. Considering that helminthic infections can alter susceptibility to other parasites, it is important to study the impact of this interaction in different scenarios/models, such as the maternal-fetal interface. This research aims to evaluate the role of saline extract (SE) of Taenia crassiceps cysticerci during Toxoplasma gondii infection in human villous trophoblastic cells of the BeWo lineage. The saline extract

Experimental Infection of Mice with the Parasitic Nematode Strongyloides ratti.

Strongyloides ratti is a parasitic nematode that naturally infects wild rats. However, most laboratory rat and mouse strains are fully susceptible to infection. Immunocompetent BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice terminate S. ratti infections within a month in the context of a canonical type 2 immune response and remain semi-resistant to a re-infection. The course of infection can be divided into three phases: (a) the tissue migration phase of the infective third-stage larvae during the first two days; (b) the early intestinal phase, including the molting to the adult parasites and embedding in the mucosa

Partially purified Strongyloides ratti antigen improved the diagnostic performance of strongyloidiasis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunochromatographic test (ICT).

Strongyloides stercoralis infection is a neglected tropical disease with a global distribution. Serodiagnosis is a sensitive method, but improving its performance and simplifying into a point-of-care test (POCT) are needed. This study aimed to improve the diagnostic performance of serological tests using partially purified Strongyloides ratti antigen in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and an immunochromatographic test (ICT). Crude S. ratti antigen was purified by an IgG affinity column to partition the antigen into flow-through, washing fraction (WF), and elution fractions. Optimi

[Infectious disease screening of asylum seekers and refugees in Switzerland].

The number of asylum seekers and refugees in Switzerland has increased over the past 20 years, many of whom come from countries where the epidemiology of infectious diseases is different from that of Switzerland. In this review, we discuss the considerations taken into account when deciding which diseases to screen for in asylum seekers and refugees, and compare the strategies proposed by different countries. An overview of the epidemiology, clinical presentation, screening methods, and treatment strategies is provided for HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C, strongyloidiasis, schistosomiasis

Molecular detection of Strongyloides stercoralis: Emerging factors and diagnostic utility.

Strongyloides stercoralis infection, a neglected tropical disease, poses a significant public health threat, especially in immunocompromised individuals. This parasitic nematode can establish chronic infections, potentially progressing to life-threatening conditions such as hyperinfection syndrome and disseminated disease. Timely and accurate diagnosis is critical for effective treatment and the prevention of severe complications. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as stool microscopy, are limited by low sensitivity, particularly for detecting low-intensity infections. Advances in molecular

The One Health approach to Strongyloides stercoralis.

The One Health concept systematically considers the health of humans, animals and the environment, emphasizing population and ecosystem health based on individual health. Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted opportunistic pathogenic parasite that can cause strongyloidiasis in both humans and animals, potentially leading to severe disease or even death in immunocompromised hosts. This article outlines the epidemiological status, diagnosis and treatment methods of strongyloidiasis. It also discusses effective response strategies based on the One Health approach to actively cope with t

Prevalence of neglected tropical diseases among migrants living in Europe: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Migration to Europe has intensified due to recent political conflicts, economic crises, and climate change, introducing an increased risk of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) within this population. While NTDs typically impact tropical regions, their presence among migrants in Europe presents a growing challenge, compounded by limited research in this area. This study provides the first meta-analysis on the prevalence of NTDs in migrants across European nations. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted focusing on studies that included NTD prevalence among mig

Strongyloides stercoralis infection in a DLBCL patient treated with rituximab and BTK inhibitor: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a common subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma characterized by high malignancy, rapid onset and aggressive clinical behavior. The disease exhibits considerable heterogeneity, which influences clinical and immunophenotypic characteristics, which in turn affect treatment outcomes and prognosis. Recently, targeted therapies have been introduced, offering improved therapeutic efficacy but with risks such as immunosuppression and opportunistic infections. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a case of a patient diagnosed with DLBCL who experienced immunosupp

Myeloid-derived IL-33 drives γδ T cell-dependent resistance against cutaneous infection by Strongyloides ratti.

Interleukin 33 (IL-33) is a pleiotropic cytokine released from diverse cell types that regulate both pro- and anti-inflammatory responses during pathogen infection. However, it remains unclear whether IL-33 controls key aspects of cutaneous immunity against skin-penetrating parasites. In this study, mice percutaneously infected with the parasitic helminth Strongyloides ratti were investigated to understand mechanisms of anamnestic immunity at the skin barrier. Surprisingly, mice lacking the Type 2 transcription factor STAT6 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 6) had no defects in

Dynamics of anti-Strongyloides IgG antibody responses and implications for strongyloidiasis surveillance in rural Amazonians: A population-based panel data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Human strongyloidiasis was recently incorporated into the World Health Organization roadmap for neglected tropical diseases targeted for control in 2021-2030. However, the prevalence, incidence, and clinical burden of Strongyloides stercoralis infection remain understudied in remote communities across the Amazon due to its chronic nature, usually with absent or unspecific clinical manifestations, and the lack of practical and sensitive diagnostics for large-scale use. Here, we apply repeated antibody testing to estimate the prevalence of anti-Strongyloides IgG responses and identif
