Riding the shockwave: Escalating spine injuries from electric micromobility devices in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Electric micromobility vehicle (electric scooter, bicycle, hoverboard, skateboard) usage has risen significantly since the mid-2010s, and is associated with rising orthopaedic trauma. Having a narrow base, upright posture, and allowing rapid changes in velocity, these vehicles cause disproportionately more head and spinal injuries than traditional bicycles. Understanding longitudinal trends in emergency department presentations of electric micromobility vehicle related spine injuries provides clinicians with tools to anticipate cases and develop spine-injury prevention strategies a

The Burden of Back and Neck Strains and Sprains in Professional Baseball Players.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective case series study. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the epidemiology of diagnoses of back and neck strains and sprains among Major League (MLB) and Minor League (MiLB) Baseball players. BACKGROUND: Baseball players perform unique sets of repetitive movements that may predispose to neck and back strains and sprains. Data are lacking concerning the epidemiology of these diagnoses in this population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: De-identified data on neck/back strains and sprains were collected from all MLB and MiLB teams from 2011 to 2016 using the MLB-commissioned Health and Inj

Health problems among elite Dutch youth long track speed skaters: a one-season prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the frequency, type, and severity of health problems in long-track speed skating to inform injury prevention strategies. METHODS: We prospectively collected weekly health and sport exposure data on 84 highly trained Dutch athletes aged 15-21 years during the 2019/2020 season using the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre questionnaire on Health Problems and the trainers' documentation. We categorised health problems into acute or repetitive mechanisms of injury or illness and calculated incidences (per 1000 sports exposure hours), weekly prevalence and burden (days of ti

Can a Psychologic Profile Predict Successful Return to Full Duty After a Musculoskeletal Injury?

BACKGROUND: Psychologic variables have been shown to have a strong relationship with recovery from injury and return to work or sports. The extent to which psychologic variables predict successful return to work in military settings is unknown. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In a population of active duty soldiers, (1) can a psychologic profile determine the risk of injury after return to full duty? (2) Do psychologic profiles differ between soldiers sustaining injuries in the spine (thoracic or lumbar) and those with injuries to the lower extremities? METHODS: Psychologic variables were assessed in so

Exploring the Epidemiology of Injuries in Athletes of the Olympic Winter Games: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This study sought to provide a comprehensive assessment of the incidence of sports injuries among athletes participating in the Olympic Winter Games and to investigate contributing factors. We gathered injury data from athletes participating in the recent four Olympic Winter Games, incorporating details on the sports event, sex, injury location, and type. Through a meta-analysis, we calculated the injury incidence rates for each sport and examined the influence of sex and the type of sport on these incidence rates. Out of 11,197 registered athletes, we documented 1,304 sports injuries. The spo

Trunk Injuries in Athletes.

Trunk pain is a common cause of performance limitation and time away from sport in athletes. However, atraumatic trunk injuries are underrepresented in medical literature and underrecognized clinically. Delays in diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment can increase injury morbidity and return-to-play time. Currently, evidence-based guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of trunk pain in athletes are limited. Thus, we provide an overview of atraumatic sport-related injuries to the thoracic spine (disc herniation, scoliosis, kyphosis), ribcage (bone stress injury, costochondritis, Tiet

How the clinical dosage of bone cement biomechanically affects adjacent vertebrae.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the biomechanical changes in the adjacent vertebrae under a physiological load (500 N) when the clinically relevant amount of bone cement was injected into fractured cadaver vertebral bodies. METHODS: The embalmed cadaver thoracolumbar specimens in which each vertebral body (T12-L2) had a BMD of < 0.75 g/cm2 were used for the experiment. For establishing a fracture model, the upper one third of the L1 vertebra was performed wedge osteotomy and the superior endplate was kept complete. Stiffness of specimens was measured in different states. Strain of the adjacen

The Thoracic Spine in the Overhead Athlete.

Overhead athletes are susceptible to many injuries, particularly in the shoulder and lumbar spine. Due to the heterogeneity of these two regional injuries, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact origin. A potential contributing factor that should be thoroughly evaluated is the thoracic spine. It can be challenging to quantify exactly how much thoracic spine mobility or lack thereof plays a role toward injury. Despite this, when examining mechanics of an overhead athlete, if neuromuscular control of the thorax is impaired, adjacent motion segments often take the brunt of the required movements.

Seat belt use to save face: impact on drivers' body region and nature of injury in motor vehicle crashes.

BACKGROUND: Seat belt use is the single most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in motor vehicle crashes. However, some case reports described seat belt use as a double-edged sword because some injuries are related to seat belt use in motor vehicle crashes. To comprehensively understand the effects of seat belt use, we systemically investigated the association between seat belt use and injuries based on anatomic body region and type of injury in drivers involved in motor vehicle crashes. METHODS: The injury information was obtained by linking crash reports with hospital discharge

The radiologic relationship of the shoulder girdle to the thorax as an aid in diagnosing neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome.

PURPOSE: Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS) is produced by compression of the brachial plexus in the thoracic outlet. The lower position of the shoulder girdle relative to the upper thorax may be related to NTOS. We investigated this hypothesis using plain cervical radiographs. METHODS: We conducted this case-control study using plain cervical anteroposterior and lateral radiographs in 63 NTOS patients and 126 carpal tunnel syndrome patients who were matched for age and sex. To estimate the position of the shoulder girdle relative to the upper thorax, we analyzed the level of the clav

Therapeutic exercise for athletes with nonspecific neck pain: a current concepts review.

CONTEXT: Benign neck pain is common in athletes and is usually the result of minor sprains, strains, or contusions. Athletes with neck pain may have deficits in cervical and/or upper thoracic mobility, muscle recruitment, strength and endurance, repositioning acuity, postural stability, and oculomotor control. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A Medline search was performed via PubMed to locate articles of any publication date through December 2011 using the search terms cervical pain, neck pain, athlete, athletic, therapeutic exercise, and rehabilitation. Intervertebral disc degeneration: evidence for two distinct phenotypes.

We review the evidence that there are two types of disc degeneration. 'Endplate-driven' disc degeneration involves endplate defects and inwards collapse of the annulus, has a high heritability, mostly affects discs in the upper lumbar and thoracic spine, often starts to develop before age 30 years, usually leads to moderate back pain, and is associated with compressive injuries such as a fall on the buttocks. 'Annulus-driven' disc degeneration involves a radial fissure and/or a disc prolapse, has a low heritability, mostly affects discs in the lower lumbar spine, develops progressively after a

Reduced thoracolumbar fascia shear strain in human chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: The role played by the thoracolumbar fascia in chronic low back pain (LBP) is poorly understood. The thoracolumbar fascia is composed of dense connective tissue layers separated by layers of loose connective tissue that normally allow the dense layers to glide past one another during trunk motion. The goal of this study was to quantify shear plane motion within the thoracolumbar fascia using ultrasound elasticity imaging in human subjects with and without chronic low back pain (LBP). METHODS: We tested 121 human subjects, 50 without LBP and 71 with LBP of greater than 12 months du

[Mountain biking : Breezy ups and traumatic downs].

For more than two decades the popularity of mountain biking as a national pastime as well as a competitive sport has been undiminished. However, its related risks are not monitored as closely as those, for example, of skiing. The injuries caused by mountain biking are specific and cannot be compared with those caused by other cycling sports. This is due not only to the characteristics of the terrain but also to the readiness to assume a higher risk compared to cycle racing. The particular value of radiology is in the acute trauma setting. Most often musculoskeletal lesions must be examined and
