BACKGROUND: The serratus anterior flap is commonly used without its cutaneous component and is covered with a skin graft. The authors have successfully used the free serratus anterior flap along with its skin paddle and have found it to be valuable for reconstruction of the face.
METHODS: Fresh cadaveric dissections and arteriography were performed to identify perforator vessels to the skin overlying the muscle. Clinically, free transfer of the musculocutaneous flap to the face was carried out in 27 patients, mostly for severe noma (infection) sequelae.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative disease of the aorta usually involves the occlusion of several intercostal and lumbar branches by mural thrombus or atherosclerotic plaques, suggesting that the blood supply to the spinal cord is mainly provided through collateral networks. Post-traumatic arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) between vascular structures in the thorax rarely occur. We present an unusual case of the delayed diagnosis of two post-traumatic thoracic AVF in a 70-year-old male. He had abnormal communications between an intercostal artery and an intercostal vein as well as an intercostal artery and a pulmonary vein. He has remained asymptomatic and has not developed a complication from these abnormal vascular structures in a three-year follow up.

During the early 1980s, the rate of paralysis after aortic surgery was as high as 41% in patients for the most complex thoracoabdominal aortic operations.
