Epidemiological screening of pinworm, schistosomiasis, and intestinal parasites in Eswatini preschoolers.

Preschool children in the Kingdom of Eswatini are excluded from the national school-based deworming programme and had never been surveyed for parasitic infection. During June 2019 we conducted a cross-sectional baseline survey of 261 children (mean age 4.8 ± 0.75 years) attending 16 kindergartens and community care points across 4 provinces. Enterobius vermicularis was sought on peri-anal cellophane/Scotch-tape swabs (n = 261); Schistosoma haematobium in single urine specimens by the chamber-tube microscope-slide (CTMS) sedimentation method (n = 232); and intestinal helminths and protozoa in s

Rare Enterobius vermicularis infection of the greater omentum misdiagnosed as schistosomiasis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Enterobiasis, caused by Enterobius vermicularis, is a common intestinal parasitic infection in children. Ectopic migration to extraintestinal sites, such as the greater omentum, is rare and often misdiagnosed due to nonspecific clinical manifestations and limited proficiency in identifying parasitic structures in paraffin-embedded histological sections. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old female presented with a three-day history of lower abdominal pain and a pelvic mass. Emergency laparoscopic resection revealed an ovarian serous cystadenoma and an omental mass. Initial histopatholo

Unveiling the disparities between private and public preschools in the risk for pinworm infections in China: a multicentre cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In China, public preschools only admit children from local permanent resident families, differing from private preschools admitting children mostly from transient population families such as work migrants. Thus, this study aims to compare pinworm infection rate and its risk factors between private and public preschools to contribute to the limited understanding of the disparities. METHODS: A three-year cross-sectional study was conducted in Jiangsu Province, China from 2019 to 2021. In each study site, two preschools types were selected: private preschool and public preschool. A Case of Appendiceal Pinworms in an Adolescent Patient.

While pinworm infections are common among children and adolescents, pinworms mimicking appendicitis are relatively rare. Notably, such manifestations may present in the absence of typical signs and symptoms of appendicitis. The appendix may even appear normal on a computed tomography (CT) scan and upon laparoscopic examination. The current case report aims to expand the literature on appendiceal pinworms while also showcasing the diagnostic challenge that such cases may represent. A 15-year-old female presented to the emergency department with acute onset of right lower quadrant abdominal pain

Epidemiological and molecular characterization of Enterobius vermicularis cases in Mersin, Turkey: An analysis based on mitochondrial DNA cox1 gene sequences.

Enterobius vermicularis is among the most common intestinal helminths, especially in children. Mitochondrial cox1 gene analyses revealed three genotypes (A, B, C). We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics and cox1 genotypes of E. vermicularis cases diagnosed at Mersin University Hospital. Between January 2017 and December 2023, 1496 samples were examined using the cellophane tape method, and 75 positives were identified. Epidemiological data were retrospectively analyzed. DNA was isolated from 30 positive samples via the phenol-chloroform method, and nested PCR products of the

Improving Adherence to World Health Organization Guidelines for Pinworm Treatment in Two Primary Healthcare Centers in Misan Province: A Clinical Audit.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths, including enterobiasis (pinworm), remain a significant cause of morbidity, especially among children in moderate and low-resourced countries. Given the noticeable recurrence of this infestation in clinical practice and the distress it causes to children and their families, this audit was carried out to improve adherence to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines regarding pinworm treatment and prevention, specifically focusing on correct dosing, repeat dosing intervals, household contact treatment, and hygiene education. METHODOLOGY: A clinical a

Atypical presentation of Enterobius vermicularis in a cognitively impaired elderly patient: A case report.

Enterobius vermicularis infection (enterobiasis) is a common intestinal parasitosis, typically characterized by perianal pruritus, and is most prevalent in children. Diagnosing enterobiasis in cognitively impaired individuals, who may not report typical symptoms, poses a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of an 86-year-old Japanese woman with cognitive impairment who was admitted for a tibial fracture. During a routine diaper change, several motile, thread-like organisms were incidentally observed in her perianal and perivaginal areas. Microscopic examination identified the organisms as

"Diagnostic challenges, atypical presentations, and therapeutic implications in ectopic Enterobius vermicularis infections: a global systematic review.".

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis is recognized as the second most common human nematode, primarily inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract and mostly affecting children. However, ectopic infections (where the parasite migrates to the extra intestinal sites) although rare, have been increasingly reported and pose diagnostic challenges due to atypical clinical presentations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guideline was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for relevant articles published from 1972 to July 2025. Unusual presentation of Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the uterine cervix during pregnancy.

Genital tract parasitic infestations are extremely rare, particularly during pregnancy. Awareness of such cases is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management. A 22-week pregnant woman in the 20s presented with lower abdominal pain. The general examination was normal; however, speculum examination revealed worm infestation of the uterine cervix with cervical ectropion. Microscopic examination of the cervical smear identified a gravid female Enterobius vermicularis containing eggs. The patient was treated with albendazole (400 mg, repeated after 2 weeks), and household contacts received the s
