Uncommon presentation of an acute appendicitis caused by Enterobius vermicularis in an adult.

Enterobius vermicularis is the most common parasitic infection in temperate and cold climates, affecting populations in both developing and developed countries. Although typically asymptomatic, it can lead to acute appendicitis, a relationship that has been a subject of debate. Therefore, we present a case of acute appendicitis induced by E. vermicularis in an adult patient and provide a comprehensive review of the current literature. A 21-year-old man presented with acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain consistent with acute appendicitis. Laboratory and imaging studies supported the diagn

Studies on the significance of secretory IgA antibodies in the pathogenesis and clinical course of enterobiasis in infected persons from Bulgaria: preliminary findings.

Enterobiasis is one of the most common human parasitic infections worldwide and in Bulgaria. The objective of this study was to ascertain the levels of intestinal secretory IgA antibodies in patients with enterobiasis, to determine the local immune response in this helminthiasis, and to evaluate its influence on clinical manifestations during infection. Faecal samples from 102 enterobiasis patients and 40 clinically healthy controls were examined. In individuals infected with Enterobius vermicularis, the range of values for SIgA was higher (from 27.5 μg/ml to 13916 μg/ml). However, no statisti

Multi-epitope protein production and its application in the diagnosis of opisthorchiasis.

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchiasis and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) continue to be public health concerns in many Southeast Asian countries. Although the prevalence of opisthorchiasis is declining, reported cases tend to have a light-intensity infection. Therefore, early detection by using sensitive methods is necessary. Several sensitive methods have been developed to detect opisthorchiasis. The immunological detection of antigenic proteins has been proposed as a sensitive method for examining opisthorchiasis. METHODS: The Opisthorchis viverrini antigenic proteins, including cathepsin B (OvCB), asparag

Pruritic Vulvovaginitis in a Young Girl: A Case of Vulvovaginal Enterobiasis.

Vulvovaginal enterobiasis is underreported and an often-missed diagnosis in prepubertal girls presenting with isolated nocturnal vulvar pruritus. An 8-year-old-girl with intense nocturnal vulvar itching for 4 months was diagnosed with enterobiasis after microscopy of a vaginal swab revealed Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) ova. The child and her family were treated with two doses of oral albendazole, 2 weeks apart, resulting in symptom resolution. This case highlights the importance of considering enterobiasis as a differential diagnosis for nocturnal vulvar pruritus to prevent delayed treatm

Seeds or Parasites? Clinical and Histopathological Features of Seeds and Parasites in the Appendix.

OBJECTIVE: Parasites and plant seeds may both be found in appendectomy specimens. Each plant seed has a different appearance and can thus exhibit wide variations under the microscope. Fragmented seeds may histologically mimic parasites. The differential diagnosis between seeds and parasites can be challenging in such cases. This study aimed to determine the incidence of parasites, seeds, and foreign bodies in appendectomy materials and highlight the most characteristic histopathological features associated with these structures. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In this study, pathology slides of 9,480 pa
