Iron-Deficiency Anemia in an Elderly Caucasian Female: An Unusual Colonoscopic Finding.

Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is common in the elderly population. It is usually the result of chronic gastrointestinal diseases which could lead to iron losses, malabsorption, or both. IDA is most often the result of chronic gastrointestinal blood loss caused by esophagitis, gastritis, ulcer, colon cancer, pre-malignant polyps, or angiodysplasia. We are presenting a unique case that describes the unusual finding of intestinal helminthiasis in an elderly patient during endoscopic evaluation for IDA. It also touches on the risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of entero

Albendazole and Mebendazole as Anti-Parasitic and Anti-Cancer Agents: an Update.

The use of albendazole and mebendazole, i.e., benzimidazole broad-spectrum anthelmintics, in treatment of parasitic infections, as well as cancers, is briefly reviewed. These drugs are known to block the microtubule systems of parasites and mammalian cells leading to inhibition of glucose uptake and transport and finally cell death. Eventually they exhibit ovicidal, larvicidal, and vermicidal effects on parasites, and tumoricidal effects on hosts. Albendazole and mebendazole are most frequently prescribed for treatment of intestinal nematode infections (ascariasis, hookworm infections, trichur

Prevalence of Intestinal Parasitic Infections among the Bulgarian Population Over a Three Year Period (2015 - 2017).

The aim of the present study is to perform a retrospective analysis of the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among the Bulgarian population over the period 2015 - 2017. The study involved all Bulgarians and foreign nationals residing in the country who had been tested for intestinal protozoa and helminths. A total of 23,785 infections have been revealed, of which 17,712 (74.47 %) were helminth and 6,073 (25.53 %) protozoan invasions. Enterobiasis was found to be the most prevalent among patients infected with intestinal helminths (81.75 %), while giardiasis (62.05 %) was the most c

The neglected role of Enterobius vermicularis in appendicitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Although the main cause of appendicitis is unclear, infection with Enterobius vermicularis is suggested as a neglected risk factor. Since, there is no comprehensive analysis to estimate the prevalence of E. vermicularis in appendicitis; therefore, we conducted a global-scale systematic review and meta-analysis study to estimate the prevalence of E. vermicularis infection in appendicitis cases. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases were systematically searched for relevant studies published until 15 August 2019. Pooled prevalence of E. vermicularis infection was estimated

Effects of anthelmintics on the pinworm Blatticola blattae in laboratory-reared German cockroaches Blattella germanica.

The efficacy of pyrantel pamoate, pyrvinium pamoate, ivermectin, and piperazine citrate against pinworm in cockroach was evaluated. Laboratory-reared German cockroaches naturally infected with Blatticola blattae were treated with the anthelmintics and necropsied at 3 to 35 days after treatment. Ivermectin at over 5 ppm and piperazine citrate at over 2000 ppm killed all the treated cockroaches. Pinworms were still detected in cockroaches given lower concentration of the aforementioned drugs. Administration of pyrantel pamoate (100-1000 ppm) and pyrvinium pamoate (2000 ppm) did not kill the cock

Enterobius vermicularis Infestation Mimicking Rectal Malignancy.

Enterobius vermicularis is a common intestinal nematode of humans that can be considered relatively harmless. A polypoid lesion mimicking malignancy was detected in the rectum of a 66-year-old female patient who had been operated for sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma in the past. Histopathological examination of the lesion revealed no malignancy but there was adult E. vermicularis nematodes and eggs. In this case report, we aimed to present an enterobiasis infestation that produces non-necrotizing granuloma tissue in the rectum.

Morphological and molecular characterization of Aspiculuris tetraptera (nematoda: Heteroxynematidae) from Mus musculus (rodentia: Muridae) in Saudi Arabia.

Aspiculuris tetraptera a pinworm of mice, is an important parasite in institutions with mice colonies for both research and teaching purposes. Infection with this parasite has impact on biomedical research. This is likely due to the availability of the parasite's eggs in the environment, therefore can easily be transmitted and infection is generally asymptomatic. No information regarding the prevalence, morphology or phylogeny is available on A. tetraptera from Saudi Arabia. A group of 50 laboratory mice were investigated for the presence of A. tetraptera. Worms were described morphologically

Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the appendix mimicking acute appendicitis in a young Italian boy Case report.

Enterobius Vermicularis (EV) is the most commonly identified heminth incidentally found within the appendix of a clinically diagnosed appendicitis. This simple presence of EV may cause appendicular colic, primarily affecting children, it is an important cause of negative appendicectomy. We report a case of a young male who presented with clinical features of acute appendicitis. Laparoscopic appendicectomy was uneventful and pathologic examination revealed the presence of an EV infestation originating from the lumen of his vermiform appendix. KEY WORDS: Acute appendicitis, Diagnosis, Enterobius
