Association between polycystic kidney disease and valve disease: a nationwide population-based nested case-control study.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a systemic disorder with recognized cardiovascular manifestations; however, its association with valvular heart disease remains incompletely defined. This study evaluated the association between PKD and valvular heart disease in a nationwide population-based setting. This nationwide population-based nested case-control study included 331,125 individuals, comprising 66,225 patients with valvular heart disease and 264,900 matched controls. valvular heart disease was identified using ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes, and PKD exposure was defined using diagnostic codes

Ill-Defined Deaths in Slovenia: Implications for Mortality Data Quality and Burden of Disease Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Ill-defined deaths (IDDs) are deaths assigned non-specific or insufficiently informative causes that do not identify a distinct underlying disease or injury. They reduce the accuracy of mortality statistics. In Slovenia, the overall proportion, structure and distribution of IDDs have not yet been comprehensively evaluated. This study examined the most frequent IDDs and their demographic and regional patterns in Slovenia from 2010 to 2021. METHODS: Individual-level mortality data from 2010 to 2021 were analysed. Deaths assigned ICD-10 codes denoting vague/non-specific conditions

Minocycline alleviates lipopolysaccharide-induced cardiotoxicity by suppressing the NLRP3/Caspase-1 signaling pathway.

Minocycline (Min), as an antibiotic, possesses various beneficial properties such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic effects. Despite these known qualities, the precise cardioprotective effect and mechanism of Min in protecting against sepsis-induced cardiotoxicity (SIC) remain unspecified. To address this, our study sought to assess the protective effects of Min on the heart. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was utilized to establish a cardiotoxicity model both in vivo and in vitro. Min was pretreated in the models. In the in vivo setting, evaluation of heart tissue histopathologic

Low Evidence for Tinnitus Risk Factors: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Identifying risk factors for tinnitus could facilitate not only the recommendations for prevention measures, but also identifying potential pathways for new interventions. This study reports the first comprehensive systematic review of analytical observational studies able to provide information about causality (i.e., case-control and cohort designs). METHODS: A literature search of four electronic databases identified epidemiological studies published on tinnitus and different exposures. Independent raters screened all studies, extracted data, and evaluated study quality usi

Chimney parallel grafts and thoracic endovascular aortic repair for blunt traumatic thoracic aortic injuries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Whilst the management of blunt traumatic thoracic aortic injury has seen a paradigm shift to an 'endovascular first' approach, the limitations of thoracic endovascular aortic repair remain. An inadequate proximal landing zone limits the use of thoracic aortic stent grafts and in an emergent polytrauma setting, aortic arch debranching via open surgery may not be practical or feasible. A wholly endovascular approach to debranching utilising 'off-the-shelf' stents and parallel graft techniques may represent a possible solution. Hence, we sought to perform a systematic review investiga

Angiokine Wisp-1 is increased in myocardial infarction and regulates cardiac endothelial signaling.

Myocardial infarctions (MIs) cause the loss of myocytes due to lack of sufficient oxygenation and latent revascularization. Although the administration of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors reduces the size of infarctions and improves cardiac physiology in small-animal models of MI injury, the cellular targets of the HDACs, which the drugs inhibit, are largely unspecified. Here, we show that WNT-inducible secreted protein-1 (Wisp-1), a matricellular protein that promotes angiogenesis in cancers as well as cell survival in isolated cardiac myocytes and neurons, is a target of HDACs. Further,

A case of intrauterine lethal fetal injury after attempted suicide of the mother.

Traumatic injuries in pregnancy such as abdominal trauma, pelvic fractures and penetrating trauma are major causes of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The most common causes of trauma during pregnancy are motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, gunshots, and burns. Pregnancy itself has been identified as a risk factor for trauma, together with a younger age, drug use, alcohol use, and domestic violence. We report the case of a 46-year-old woman, 34 weeks pregnant, who attempted suicide by jumping from a flyover, immediately after a probably deliberate traffic collision with the
