A case of extra-gastrointestinal anisakidosis mimicking peritoneal carcinomatosis.

We report a rare case of extra-gastrointestinal anisakidosis in a patient with abdominal pain. Initial computed tomography scan showed lesions concerning for peritoneal carcinomatosis. Endoscopy confirmed anisakidosis as the source of radiographic findings. Clinicians should consider anisakidosis in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, omental lesions, and dietary risk factors.

Tracking the spatial and longitudinal dynamics of mixed infections of urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis, inclusive of Schistosoma mattheei, in two sentinel rural communities from southern Malawi.

The World Health Organization's 2030 neglected tropical disease roadmap aims to eliminate schistosomiasis as a public health problem with preventive chemotherapy (PC) as a foundational stratergy; however, mixed infections of Schistosoma haematobium with zoonotic species, inclusive of putative hybrids, present a potential challenge. We sought to address the importance of mixed species infections through a 2-year, longitudinal epidemiological investigation at two villages in southern Malawi (Samama and Mthawira). Participants (approx. 2000) were sampled at baseline (BL), a 12-month follow-up (FU

Dynamic interactions between Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma mattheei and Schistosoma mansoni underscore the complex polyparasitism of intestinal schistosomiasis in southern Malawi.

Schistosomiasis is prevalent among school-aged children (SAC) in Mangochi District, Malawi, where both intestinal and urogenital forms are endemic. In 2024, we identified schistosomiasis cases predominantly associated with excretion of Schistosoma haematobium × Schistosoma mattheei ova in the faeces of two individuals from Samama village, Mangochi District. In this expanded cross-sectional study, we characterize the prevalence and species composition of Schistosoma infections among 247 SAC in Samama, using genus- and species-specific molecular diagnostics. We also present follow-up data from t

First molecular identification of the zoonotic parasite Anisakis pegreffii (Nematoda: Anisakidae) in Albania.

For the first time, Anisakidae larvae in commercially caught fish from the southwestern Ionian Sea off the Albanian coast were identified using molecular techniques. Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) from the Vlora district were examined for parasitic infections. Enzymatic digestion revealed the presence of Anisakis spp. larvae, which were subsequently analysed at ISS Rome by multiplex PCR and PCR-RFLP. Molecular results confirmed the larvae as Anisakis pegreffii. This study provides the first molecular confirmation of Anisakis species in Albanian waters. The detection of Anisakis

Immunological effects of coinfections with Toxoplasma gondii, Helicobacter pylori, and Epstein-Barr virus on anisakiasis associated phenotypes.

The hygiene hypothesis proposes that infections acquired through the fecal-oral route or contaminated food, such as Toxoplasma gondii, may protect against IgE-mediated allergic disorders. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been negatively associated with atopy, while Anisakis simplex and Helicobacter pylori are associated with acute and chronic urticaria, respectively. This study aimed to explore the impact of coinfection status on anisakiasis-associated phenotypes. A total of 112 human subjects were categorized by Anisakis sensitization status and clinical phenotypes: 25 with gastroallergic anisaki

Epidemiology of gastrointestinal parasitism and field applicability of FAMACHA© in indigenous goats of Southern India.

Gastrointestinal parasitism severely impacts small ruminant production in tropical regions. This study investigated prevalence, risk factors, infection intensity, and co-infection patterns in 1013 goats across five districts in Southern India, while evaluating the field applicability of FAMACHA© scoring as a practical clinical indicator. Overall parasite prevalence was 80.4%, dominated by strongyle nematodes (84.9% of infected animals) and Eimeria spp. (57.3%), with 71.5% mixed infections. Multivariable logistic regression identified breed, sex, season, age, and deworming history as independen

Influence of parasitic load, breed, age, housing and season on skin and hair coat condition in horses.

BACKGROUND: Strongyles are nematode parasites that affect the large intestine and cecum of the horse, with symptoms ranging from poor hair coat to colic. This can influence gut health, nutrient absorption, and overall body condition. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: Determine the effects of parasitic load, breed, age, housing, and season on skin and hair coat conditions. We hypothesized that horses with low fecal egg counts would have better hair and skin coat condition compared with those with high fecal egg counts. METHODS: A total of forty-five Morgan and 11 Thoroughbred horses were included in this stud

Determinants of Ascaridoid Nematode Infection and Anisakis-Related Zoonotic Exposure Risk in Eastern Mediterranean Gadiformes Fishes.

Larvae of ascaridoid nematodes, particularly Anisakis spp., are common parasites of commercially important marine fishes and may represent a zoonotic hazard following ingestion of raw or undercooked seafood. We investigated the ascaridoid fauna of the sympatric European hake (Merluccius merluccius) and greater forkbeard (Phycis blennoides) from the Ionian Sea (Eastern Mediterranean), integrating host biometric and seasonal drivers with molecular identification and quantitative risk assessment (QRA) for the zoonotic Anisakis pegreffii. Anisakis pegreffii was the dominant species in both hosts,

Excretory-secretory products of the fish-borne parasite Anisakis simplex L3 larvae possess allergens and unusual glycan modifications.

Anisakis simplex is a parasitic aquatic nematode, which may cause mild-to-severe gastrointestinal allergic reactions (anisakiasis) with clinical symptoms, such as rhinitis and urticaria, in humans who accidentally consume raw or undercooked marine products contaminated with infective L3 Anisakis larvae. Several Anisakis excretory-secretory (E/S) products and somatic proteins are known to be involved in IgE-mediated allergic reactions. In comparison with vertebrates, nematodes have a distinct machinery to glycosylate their proteins, and unusual glycan structures have been reported previously, m

Prevalence and distribution of anisakid species in fish from North African marine waters: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Foodborne parasites remain a concern for human health. Among marine parasites, anisakid nematodes are notable species frequently detected in marketable fish. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anisakid species in fish caught along the coasts of North African countries. A systematic literature review was carried out using two electronic databases, in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Forty studies published between 2006 and 2024 were included in the meta-analysis. Data were analyzed using the meta package in R software, employing a random-effects model. The overall pooled prevalenc

Prevalence, risk factors, and zoonotic potential of gastrointestinal helminths in cats: A participatory epidemiological study.

Domestic cats are the only felines living exclusively with humans, making them ecologically invasive and widespread across terrestrial habitats. Their domestication stems from their rodent control abilities and companionship. However, they are susceptible to gastrointestinal parasites such as Ancylostoma spp., Toxocara cati, and Dipylidium caninum, causing issues like anaemia, vomiting, and sometimes death, especially in kittens. These parasites can also pose zoonotic risks, transmitting diseases like visceral and ocular larva migrants to humans. A total of 100 cats with no deworming history w

The photodynamic inactivation in the control of the seafood zoonotic parasite, Anisakis sp.

Anisakis spp. L3 larvae commonly found in marine fish species are an important biological hazard when raw or inadequately thermally processed fishery products are consumed with live larvae, highlighting the need for effective control strategies. This study evaluated the efficacy and mechanism of photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of Anisakis L3 larvae, using the cationic photosensitizer (PS) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin tetraiodide (TMPyP). Larvae were collected from Atlantic horse mackerel and grouped by size: batch A (larvae ≈ 1.5 cm) and batch B (larvae ≈ 2.0 cm). Inac

Vaccination of mice with Trichinella spiralis serine proteinase enhanced gut epithelial barrier and elicited a high protective immunity.

BACKGROUND: A Trichinella spiralis serine proteinase (TsSPc) was identified in the intestinal infective larva (IIL) surface and excretory-secretory (ES) antigens. Our previous study showed that recombinant TsSPc (rTsSPc) disrupted intestinal epithelial integrity and barrier function, and mediated larval invasion of intestinal mucosa. This study aims to investigate the impact of rTsSPc vaccination on intestinal epithelial integrity and its elicited protective immunity in a mouse model. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING: ELISA results demonstrated that rTsSPc immunization induced a systemic humoral

Anisakis simplex larvae viability and potential pathogenicity in vitro is controlled by the essential oil from sea fennel (Crithmum maritinum L., Apiaceae).

Essential oils, natural volatile products extracted from aromatic plants, exhibit a wide range of biological activities, including antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties. Anisakis simplex is a parasitic nematode commonly found in marine fish, which poses a significant health risk to humans through the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood, leading to anisakiasis, a zoonotic disease with both gastrointestinal and allergic manifestations. In this study, the impact of Crithmum maritimum L. (Apiaceae) essential oil on this nematode was evaluated in vitro. The chemical composition of C. mar

Developmental and geographic transcriptomic variation in Anisakis simplex (s. s.) reveals lncRNA-mediated regulation of mRNA expression.

Marine nematodes of the genus Anisakis are shaped by complex life cycles and heterogeneous marine environments, yet the molecular basis of their developmental and population differentiation remains poorly understood. Here, we analyzed mRNA and long non-coding RNA expression in third- and fourth-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex (s. s.) collected from the Baltic Sea and the Northeast Atlantic using high-throughput RNA sequencing. Larval development was associated with extensive transcriptional remodeling involving cuticle organization, metabolism, proteolysis, and host-interaction pathways. Comp

Incidental Detection of Asymptomatic Colonic Anisakiasis During Surveillance Colonoscopy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Anisakiasis is a parasitic infection caused by ingestion of raw or undercooked seafood containing Anisakis larvae. Although gastric involvement is common, colonic anisakiasis is rare and may be asymptomatic, making diagnosis difficult without endoscopic evaluation. We report a case of asymptomatic colonic anisakiasis incidentally detected during surveillance colonoscopy in a 53-year-old man 2 years after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for a sessile serrated lesion. The patient had consumed raw squid the evening before colonoscopy but had no abdominal symptoms. Bowel preparation was per
