Fecundity of the zoonotic nematode Anisakis pegreffii cultivated in vitro.

The zoonotic marine nematodes of the genus Anisakis Dujardin, 1845 are the causative agents of anisakiasis, a parasitosis that has been increasingly reported in Europe over the past decade due to the more frequent consumption of lightly processed or raw seafood. While the life cycle in the marine environment is relatively well-known, an in vitro life cycle has recently been established with the goal to serve as a model for a better understanding of the functional biology of the nematode and consequent devising of strategies for its detection and inactivation. However, the reproductive capacity

Endoscopic microanatomy of anisakis. In vivo study.

Anisakiasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by nematodes of the Anisakidae family, acquired through the ingestion of raw or undercooked fish or seafood infected with their larvae. We present an in vivo endoscopic study in which morphological evaluation and characterization of Anisakis sp. were achieved using optical magnification. This approach allowed detailed visualization of the penetration point in the gastric mucosa, which could optimize its identification and extraction during diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopy.

Dual roles of Anisakis pegreffii proteins in macrophage immune dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Anisakis infections have become a significant public health concern primarily caused by consuming raw or undercooked seafood. This in is due to a shift in global eating habits, and seafood consumption is becoming increasingly popular. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study explores how Anisakis pegreffii body proteins (ABP) and glycoproteins affect macrophage polarization. The parasites collected from East China Sea hairtail fish (Trichiurus lepturus), with glycoproteins isolated from ABP via ConA magnetic beads. RAW264.7 macrophages were treated with ABP, glycoproteins, and co-incubat

A portrait of 2 nematodes in liver of their paratenic fish hosts, illustrating different immunological approaches.

Comparative histopathological and ultrastructural investigations were performed on the livers of 2 fish species, namely, flounder (Platichthys flesus (L.)) naturally infected with the nematode Anisakis simplex (s.l.) (Rudolphi, 1809) larvae (L3) and tuvira (Gymnotus inaequilabiatus) (Valenciennes, 1839) harbouring the nematode Brevimulticaecum sp. (L3) (Shikhobalova and Mozgovoi, 1952). The intensity of infection by A. simplex (s.l.) larvae (L3) in flounders ranged from 3 to 10 parasites per organ. The worms were encapsulated by the peritoneal visceral serosa on the external surface of the liv

Gastric anisakiasis suspected by point-of-care ultrasound finding in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of gastric anisakiasis is typically confirmed by detecting larvae during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Therefore, it is important to raise clinical suspicion to prompt this procedure. While abdominal computed tomography is often performed for this purpose, the utility of ultrasound as a workup for gastric anisakiasis is not well established. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old male with a past medical history significant for IgA vasculitis visited the emergency department with acute onset epigastric pain. The patient had sushi containing horse mackerel, mackerel, an

A case of chronic abdominal pain related to the ingestion of raw seafood: Anisakiasis.

A previously healthy 40-year-old man presented to the emergency department with acute abdominal pain and repeated bilious vomiting that began the previous day and progressively worsened. On examination, he was afebrile and hemodynamically stable, with mild diffuse abdominal tenderness and no peritoneal signs. Laboratory studies showed leukocytosis with neutrophil predominance, an elevated C-reactive protein, and no eosinophilia. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography revealed segmental thickening of the small bowel wall with localized obstruction, without evidence of a mechanical caus

Protective immune response in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) against the parasitic nematode Anisakis simplex.

INTRODUCTION: Parasitic nematodes are prevalent in fish populations. The parasites are pathogenic but depress host responses, which limit clearance of the pathogens from the invasion sites. We hypothesized that one of several control strategies, which could augment protection, is immunization of the fish host with parasite antigens prior to live pathogen exposure. METHODS: We used rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss as a host model and third stage larvae (L3) Anisakis simplex (Nematoda, Ascaridoidea, Anisakidae) as pathogen model. We used a total of 120 fish and immunized 40 of the fish with a

Experimental trichuriasis: Changes in the immune response and bacterial translocation during acute phase development illustrated with 3D model animation.

Trichuriasis, a well-known type of soil-transmitted helminthiasis, is a neglected gastrointestinal nematode disease predominantly affecting children in tropical regions and is caused by Trichuris trichiura. The potential zoonotic transmission of this disease is indicated by its presence in nonhuman primates. Chronic infection leads to mucosal damage, bacterial translocation, and intense inflammatory infiltration; however, the progression of these processes remains poorly understood. This study tracks the acute phase of experimental trichuriasis, providing detailed insights into nematode tissue

Anisakis Contamination in Fillets of Chub Mackerel and Blue Mackerel Sold in Japan.

To evaluate the risk of anisakiasis, we investigated their prevalence in fillets of chub mackerel and blue mackerel in 2022 and 2023. The results indicated that the prevalence (percent of larvae-positive fillet samples) and abundance (number of larvae per 100 g fillet) of Anisakis larvae in fillets of chub mackerel were not significantly different between the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The prevalence and abundance of Anisakis larvae in blue mackerel were markedly lower than those in the chub mackerel.

Is Sociability Generally Linked to Infection? A Study Based on Rhesus and Japanese Macaques.

Parasite infection is one key risk inherent in group living and is considered to influence the formation and evolution of animal societies. Previous studies investigating the relationship between sociability (a measure of an individual's level of social engagement) and parasite infection have yielded mixed results, with some observing positive relationships between social network centrality and infection and others observing negative or no sociability-infection links. Here, we aggregated behavioral and parasitological data from three groups of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta brevicaudus) in Ch

Diagnostic performance evaluation of ParaEgg for identifying intestinal helminthiasis: A comparative study with conventional copromicroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal helminthiasis remains a significant public health concern in Bangladesh, affecting both humans and animals. Conventional copromicroscopic methods, though widely used, often lack sensitivity, particularly in areas with low prevalence and intensity of infection. ParaEgg, a new diagnostic tool, has been developed to improve the efficiency of copromicroscopic detection. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ParaEgg in detecting intestinal helminth infections in humans and dogs compared to commonly used traditional methods. METHODS: A cross-sectional stu
