Intestinal capillariasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Capillaria philippinensis, a fish-borne nematode. Patients present with clinical symptoms that include borborygmus chronic diarrhea, intermittent abdominal pain, weight loss, and several degrees of painless lower-leg edema. Atypical clinical manifestations and diagnostic confusion with diarrhea caused by gastrointestinal cancer, HIV infection, giardiasis, and hyperthyroidism may occur. Misdiagnosis and improper treatment can be fatal. Parasite eggs and larvae are passed intermittently in feces, rendering fecal examination insen

Hookworms are blood-sucking intestinal parasites that can cause anaemia and protein loss in humans. Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a zoonotic hookworm species of dogs, is the second most common cause of human hookworm infections. With the increasing anthelmintic resistance risks and the uncontrolled stray dog population in Sarawak Borneo, East Malaysia, understanding the genetic structure of A. ceylanicum is crucial for tracking mutation patterns and assessing zoonotic transmission risks. This study determined the prevalence and genetic diversity of dog hookworm species using microscopy, PCR and sequ

Anisakidosis is a parasitic infection caused by ingesting the third-stage larvae of the Anisakidae family, a group of nematode parasites found in raw or undercooked aquatic animals including fish. The incidence of this zoonosis is increasing in Western countries, driven by the growing consumption of seafood, especially Japanese cuisine, and influenced by climate change, which is altering the distribution of parasites and the availability of their hosts. Intestinal manifestations are uncommon compared to gastric involvement, and the diagnosis remains difficult. Treatment is conservative in most

Anoplocephala perfoliata is the most common equine tapeworm infection. This parasite is found at the small/large intestinal junction and has been associated with colic. The cestode has an indirect lifecycle involving oribatid mite intermediate hosts, though little is known of its epidemiology. This study aimed to monitor seasonal fluctuations in pasture oribatid mite numbers and the presence of Anoplocephala spp. DNA in mite samples collected from three equine premises in the UK. Exposure to infection in resident horses was assessed by measuring tapeworm-specific salivary antibodies. The data

BACKGROUND: An abundance of vitamins, minerals, and vital amino acids can be found in fish. The parasitic zoonotic disease anisakiasis is caused by ingesting the third larval stage of Anisakis spp., which is carried by nematodes called anisakids. Serious health problems, such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and allergic reactions that could approach anaphylactic level, are brought to the human body by ingesting undercooked fish, where this parasite is present.
AIM: Raw herrings, smoked herrings, raw sardines, salted sardines, raw mackerel, and raw saurus were all tested for the presence

Fish in wild and cultured populations may be infected with numerous types of pathogens but the host responses vary dependent on both host and parasite species. The present study demonstrates how an experimental infection with endoparasitic nematode larvae (Anisakis simplex) induces cellular and humoral immune responses in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. The nematode larvae invaded the peritoneal cavity of the fish following oral administration and became encapsulated by a range of host cells including macrophages, neutrophils, mast cells, fibroblasts, and lymphocytes. The main part (92.7%)

Anisakid nematodes are widespread marine parasites with complex life cycles involving invertebrates and fish as intermediate or transport hosts, and marine mammals as definitive hosts. Despite their ecological importance, and the zoonotic potential associated with the larval stages found in fish, recent data on anisakid species diversity in pinnipeds from Norwegian waters remain scarce. In this study, we investigated anisakid infections in two juvenile harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) stranded along the southern coast of Norway. Gastrointestinal nematodes were collected, morphologically classifi

Anisakis simplex is a cosmopolitan parasitic nematode of marine organisms with a complex life cycle. Consuming fish infected with its larvae poses a health risk, as the parasites can penetrate gastrointestinal mucosa, damage stomach and intestinal walls, and trigger allergic reactions. The resulting disease is known as anisakiasis. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) classifies A. simplex as a biohazard. Most of its developmental stages (L3, L4, and adults) occur under anaerobic conditions, and larvae derive energy mainly from saccharides. However, the effect of glucose on L3 and L4 larv

Anisakis pegreffii is a zoonotic marine nematode whose life-cycle involves marine organisms-small crustaceans, fish and squids as intermediate/paratenic hosts, and marine mammals, mainly cetaceans-as definitive ones. When its third-stage larvae (L3) are accidentally ingested by humans with the consumption of raw or undercooked parasitized fish and/or squids, the parasite fails to complete its life cycle, leading to human anisakiasis. Despite increasing interest in understanding the molecular basis of pathogenic effects in human anisakiasis, the transcriptomic response of A. pegreffii L3 to int

Strongyles, especially non-migratory Strongylidae, are the most common equine gut parasites, and typically occur in mixed infections with 10 - 20 species per host. Current knowledge on strongyle species prevalence and within-host tropism is sparse. Herein species composition of mixed strongyle infections of 12 naturally infected untreated young horses, based on strongyle eggs extracted from faeces, cultured third stage larva and luminal worms collected from ventral and dorsal colon was examined. Species were identified using a cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) metabarcoding approach allowing differ

Anisakis simplex, a parasitic nematode transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood, is known to cause gastric anisakidosis, often accompanied by acute inflammatory and allergic responses. However, the underlying immunological mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we established a murine model by orally infecting BALB/c mice with live Anisakis larvae to elucidate the host immune response. Repeated infection with live Anisakis larvae, but not with homogenates, induced severe gastric inflammation, accompanied by a marked elevation of total IgE, Anisakis-specifi

INTRODUCTION: Anisakiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease transmitted through consumption of fish, with increasing global cases. While thorough cooking kills Anisakis larvae, thermo-stable allergens can still cause allergic reactions. Traditional Mediterranean seafood methods such as marinating, salting, and brining, which lack heat treatment, pose a high risk of anisakiasis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study investigated the antilarval effects of nanoemulsions made from thyme, garlic, and grape seed essential oils combined with brines on Anisakis L3 larvae in vitro.
RESULTS: Larvae were col

Nematode parasites of the family Anisakidae can cause human disease when ingested, at the third larval stage (L3), through infected fish or fish products. While human infection is often asymptomatic, in some cases it may present with symptoms ranging from mild to severe gastrointestinal disorders, skin rash, itching, or even anaphylaxis. Ingestion of destroyed L3 (e.g., following processing, sanitisation, or cooking) may still trigger allergic reactions. In the present study, the occurrence of Anisakidae L3 in ready-to-eat (RTE) fish products was investigated. A total of 108 RTE fish products,

Some species of Anisakidae are known to cause human anisakidosis due to ingestion of seafood containing larvae L3. Although cartilaginous fishes are infrequently reported as hosts for anisakids, they could play a role in their transmission to definitive hosts. The occurrence and level of infestation by anisakids on 18 species of skates were analysed, based on a sample of 676 specimens. A total of 1692 worms were recorded; the morphologic and genetic analysis of mDNA cox2 gene, confirmed the presence of Anisakis pegreffii, A. berlandi and Phocanema cattani, whose presence and burdens varied amo

The prevalence of Anisakis contamination in "ready-to-cook (RTC)" mackerel products distributed in Mie Prefecture, central area of Japan, was examined to assess the risk of anisakiasis. Of 136 mackerel fillets examined, 30 samples (22.1%) were positive for Anisakis larvae. The mackerels caught in the Sea of Japan were higher in frequency of Anisakis contamination (41.4%) compared with those from the Pacific Ocean (7.7%) (p<0.01). Number of Anisakis larvae isolated from RTC mackerel fillets was 169, of which 147 (87.0%) were still alive. Around a half of the Anisakis larvae in mackerel fillets

Anisakidosis is a fish-borne zoonosis characterised by mild to severe gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and potentially linked to the onset of allergic reactions and cancer. The disease follows the ingestion of marine products infected with third-stage (L3) larvae of the genera Anisakis and Phocanema. Epidemiologically, anisakiasis is most prevalent in countries where fish consumption is high, such as Japan and the Mediterranean regions; however, the globalization of dietary habits has contributed to the expansion of its incidence worldwide. In this Chapter, we provide an overview of aspects rela

Anisakiasis is a foodborne zoonosis caused by ingesting raw seafood containing anisakid larvae. Its global incidence has increased with rising seafood consumption, highlighting the need for effective prevention methods. While freezing at -20 °C for 24 h is a standard preventive measure, it compromises seafood quality. Pulsed power (PP) technology, delivering high-voltage microsecond pulses, has emerged as a promising non-thermal alternative. Here, we evaluated PP inactivation efficacy using agar penetration and rabbit infection tests. Larvae treated with 10 pulses of 13 kV for 10 µs failed to

Gastrointestinal helminths remain a major constraint to poultry production worldwide, causing significant economic losses and threatening food security. In Egypt, the molecular and phylogenetic data on Raillietina echinobothrida and Ascaridia galli are limited in domestic chickens. This study investigated the prevalence, morphology, and genetic characterization of these helminths infecting domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) in Gharbia province, Egypt. Between April 2018 and March 2019, 150 intestinal tracts were collected from slaughterhouses and poultry processing facilities. Helmin
