Four cases of transient anisakiasis in northern California acquired by ingestion of raw fish were reported to health authorities between May 1977 and June 1980. A single Phocanema decipiens-like 4th-stage (L4) larva was identified in each of two cases. A recently molted adult male P. decipiens with a fragment of attached L4 cuticle and prominent caudal papillae was recovered from a third person. The latter is the only human case known in which an anisakid worm developed to the adult stage was involved. Two Anisakis type I larvae were recovered in the fourth case, being the first parasitologica

The authors recently encountered a patient with omental anisakiasis who presented with features of acute appendicitis and who made an uneventful recovery following resection of an inflammatory omental mass containing the larva(e). Anisakiasis refers to infestation of humans by species of marine nematode larvae belonging to the subfamily Anisakinae. Although this condition is rarely reported in the United States, it has been well described both in Holland and in the Orient. Several publications in the Japanese literature have detailed the morphology of the parasite and the clinical symptoms of

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is described for the detection of serum antibodies to visceral larva migrans (Toxocariasis). Excretory-secretory antigens of the second-stage larvae of Toxocara canis were used as antigen to coat the polystyrene plates. With sera from patients high antibody titers were observed in both ocular and visceral disorders. Cross-reactions due to other parasitic infections could be excluded, including other migrating larval infections such as ascariasis, trichinellosis, strongyloidiasis, filariasis, and anisakiasis. In a small seroepidemiologic survey of healthy pr

In this study, we have developed a reliable radioimmunoassay (RIA) for Ascaris suum protein (Asp) and have measured the serum concentration of Asp in control subjects and in patients with helminthiasis and a variety of gastrointestinal diseases. The cross-reactivities of Asp antibody with other helminth worm antigens were also measured by RIA. Ascaris lumbricoides contained approximately the same amount of Asp antigenic substance as did Ascaris suum. Toxocara canis had a high concentration of a substance partially cross-reactive with Asp. Small amounts of substance cross-reacting with Asp were

We describe 5 own cases of anisakiasis, sometimes called "herring worm disease", which, in our patients, was acquired by the consumption of raw or undercooked herring containing the larvae of the Anisakis nematodes. These cases are apparently the first observed in GDR. Clinically, all patients presented acute abdominal syndromes. On account of stenosing eosinophilic intestinal wall phlegmons associated with focal or diffuse peritonitis therapy included resection of 9 to 20 cm long segments of the small intestine or partial sigmoidectomy. In 2 patients severe complications necessitated relaparo

A case of small-bowel obstruction occurred secondary to an uncommon parasitic disease, anisakiasis. Intestinal obstruction is a rare manifestation of this disease. Anisakiasis may be seen initially with nausea and vomiting or may mimic acute appendicitis or Crohn's disease. The predisposing factor in all cases is the ingestion of raw fish, and the disease is preventable by cooking fish at greater than 60 degrees C for a short time or by freezing at less than -20 degrees C for more than 24 hours. Anisakiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of small-bowel obstruction in patien

Larval ascarid nematodes recently discovered in fresh salmon were identified as Anisakis larval Type I, this roundworm is the etiologic agent of anisakiasis, a parasitic disease characterized by eosinophilic granulomas affecting the human gastrointestinal tract. Infection may occur following ingestion of raw or poorly cooked fish. Patients generally present with an acute abdominal syndrome mimicking a wide variety of clinical conditions, thus creating a diagnostic dilemma. Unselected samples of fresh salmon tested by the University of Michigan Clinical Microbiology Laboratory and School of Pub

Within a few hours after being administered to the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta), Hysterothylacium type MB larvae penetrated the stomach wall, causing hemorrhage and attracting eosinophils. Inocula up to 300 larvae, however, did not cause peripheral hypereosinophilia. This species is the first ascaridoid which normally matures in fish that has been shown to penetrate the alimentary tract of a primate. Consequently, human consumption of raw seafood from at least the northern Gulf of Mexico free from infections, with Anisakis spp., Phocanema decipiens, or other species that mature in mammals or

For the first time Anisakis larvae were found in pike perches, Stizostedion lucioperca (L), caught in GDR coastal waters. Herrings parasitized by Anisakis are regarded as the source of infestation, for herrings represent an important part of the food of the pike perch. The occurrence of anisakiasis by eating pike perch is very unlikely considering eating habits in the GDR. The occurrence of larvae as "natural indicators" can be applied in fish biological research.

Intestinal anisakiasis refers to the accidental infection of humans by a marine nematode as a result of eating raw fish which contains larval stages of the nematode sub-family Anisakinae. The symptoms mimic appendicitis or regional enteritis and most cases are diagnosed post-operatively. This patient developed acute intestinal symptoms two weeks after eating raw salmon. A degenerating 150 micron larva accompanied by acute inflammation and granulation tissue was found in an adhesive band which extended from her jejunum to her omentum. Examination of a single salmon obtained from the same market

Juveniles of the ascarid nematodes Anisakis sp. and Phocanema sp. from marine teleosts, have been implicated as major causative agents of human anisakiasis. Whereas juveniles of the related genus Thynnascaris sp. have not been reported from humans, this nematode may occur in fish concurrently with the aforementioned species. The juvenile anisakine nematodes are not readily identified, and reliable morphological markers would provide a valuable aid in identification of potentially pathogenic individuals. In this study of cuticular fine structure, the following characteristic difference appeared

A 40 year old woman suffered from acute diarrhea and convulsive abdominal pains. Because of a palpable tumor of the right lower abdomen, which was thought to be localized in the deeper layers of the colon ascendens, a hemicolectomy on the right side was performed. Histologically there was a severe phlegmonous eosinophilic inflammation of the bowel wall and the surrounding fatty tissue. A parasite was found within the strongly oedematous submucosal layer. The different forms of eosinophilic inflammatory processes are referred to, with special emphasis on Anisakiasis. The so called "herring-worm

In an attempt to determine the etiological mechanism of anisakiasis, immunological studies were performed using guinea pigs and rabbits. In order to carry out these examinations, we used a specific antigen, hemoglobin of Anisakis larva. We demonstrate that the etiological mechanism of anisakiasis involves anaphylactic reaction as well as Arthus reaction in the digestive tract. Cell-mediated immune reaction also have to consider the relation of establishment of allergic condition in experimental anisakiasis. These results suggest that the three types allergic reaction may play the main role in

A nationwide investigation on the incidence of anisakiasis over a period of 5 years from 1973 through to 1977 was conducted by questionaire sent to 851 main medical centers throughout Japan. The number of cases for all Japanese for a period of 5 years were 334 cases of gastric anisakiasis and 45 intestinal anisakiasis. We investigated both a random group of 3,108 inhabitants of Hokkaido and 42 anisakiasis patients using skin test, indirect hemagglutination test and measurement of serum IgE. We have demonstrated that the etiologic mechanism of acute anisakiasis involved anaphylactic reaction as
