PURPOSE: We evaluated small intestinal submucosa (SIS) as a substitute for skin in endoscopic urethroplasty performed as treatment for inflammatory and iatrogenic strictures of the male bulbar urethra, and in the early treatment of bulbomembranous urethral injuries associated with recent pelvic fractures. Tissue integration and epithelialization of SIS in endoscopic urethroplasty were assessed, as was the long-term maintenance of urethral patency following this treatment.

Colorectal decompression with a catheter was performed for evacuation of stool before definitive surgery in two patients with a persistent cloaca. A total of 92 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were subjected to modified Madigan prostatectomy (MPC) for a much satisfactory effect in open prostatectomy surgery. Exposing anterior prostatic urethra near the bladder neck and conjunct cystotomy modified the MPC procedure. This modified procedure preserved prostatic urethra intact and could also deal with intracystic lesions at the same time. The intact of prostatic urethra was kept completely or largely in 86 cases. In most cases the foreign body can be removed transurethrally with a pair of grasping forceps. In some cases objects have to be cut or resected into small fragments, making it easier to extract the object or wash it out. An open surgical procedure via suprapubic transvesical approach is reserved for large-sized bodies or in cases when endoscopic methods are unsuccessful. OBJECTIVES: To determine the safety and efficacy of holmium laser core-through urethrotomy (HolCTU) for the treatment of post-traumatic obliterative stricture of the urethra.

PURPOSE: To preserve sexual function following radical prostatectomy, one must avoid injury to the neurovascular bundles (NVBs). In the conventional open surgical technique, the use of energy sources for hemostasis is avoided to prevent damage to the cavernous nerves. In contrast, during laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, electrosurgical and ultrasonic energy sources are frequently used for hemostasis during dissection of the prostate. In this study, we evaluated the acute and chronic physiological effects of various hemostatic energy sources on cavernous nerve function in the canine model.
