BACKGROUND: Limitations in the lumbar spine movement reduce lumbar vertebral motion and affect spinopelvic kinematics. We studied the influence of lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration on spinofemoral movement, from standing to sitting, in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA).
METHODS: Of 138 consecutive patients scheduled for THA due to unilateral avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head, those with ≥3 discs with University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) disc degeneration score > 1 were defined as the lumbar degenerative disc disease (LDD) group, and the remaining pati

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
OBJECTIVE: To determine how lumbar spinal fusion-total hip arthroplasty (LSF-THA) operative sequence would affect THA outcomes.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Outcomes following THA in patients with a history of lumbar spinal degenerative disease and fusion are incompletely understood.
METHODS: The PearlDiver Research Program (http://www.pearldiverinc.com) was used to identify patients undergoing primary THA. Patients were divided into four cohorts: 1) Primary THA without spine pathology, 2) remote LSF prior to hip pathology and THA, and patients with concurr

INTRODUCTION: Spondyloptosis is a form of vertebral dislocation and the most advanced form of spondylolisthesis. Traumatic spondyloptosis is usually caused by high-energy impact and results in unstable spine deformity and spinal canal deformation, which lead to severe spinal cord injury. Traumatic spondyloptosis is mostly reported in the lumbo-sacral junction, while it is rarely documented in mid-lumbar segments. To the best of the authors' knowledge, only 16 cases of mid-lumbar spondyloptosis have been described previously. Herein, we present a L3 to L4 spondyloptosis case that did not involv

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar disectomy (PELD) is one of the most popular minimally invasive techniques of spinal surgery in recent years. At present, there are 2 main surgical approaches in PELD: foraminal approach and interlaminar approach. What's more, foraminoplasty is a necessary step for both approaches. However, there are few biomechanical studies on the formation of different parts of the intervertebral foramen. The aim of this study is to explore the effects of different foraminoplasty methods on the biomechanics of the corresponding and adjacent segments of the lumbar

Overhead athletes are susceptible to many injuries, particularly in the shoulder and lumbar spine. Due to the heterogeneity of these two regional injuries, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact origin. A potential contributing factor that should be thoroughly evaluated is the thoracic spine. It can be challenging to quantify exactly how much thoracic spine mobility or lack thereof plays a role toward injury. Despite this, when examining mechanics of an overhead athlete, if neuromuscular control of the thorax is impaired, adjacent motion segments often take the brunt of the required movements.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a growing and probably undervalued concern for neurosurgeons and spine surgeons, as they can impact their quality of life and career length. This systematic review aims to ascertain this association and to search for preventive measures.
METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-P-based review on ergonomics and WMSDs in neurosurgery over the last 15 years. Twelve original articles were included, of which 6 focused on spine surgery ergonomics, 5 cranio-facial surgery (mainly endoscopic), and one on both domains.
RESULTS: We found a huge meth

BACKGROUND: Frequently, patients with hip complaints also report lower back pain, and elective surgery may be indicated due to end-stage hip osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease. Thus, we aim to answer the question of whether total hip arthroplasty (THA) or lumbar spine surgery should be performed first in patients with hip-spine-syndrome, from an arthroplasty surgeon's point of view.
DECISION-MAKING: The present review demonstrates that in patients with an acute neurological deficit, lumbar spine surgery should be performed first. However, in patients without these symptoms, several

OBJECTIVES: Evaluating treatment outcomes of local corticosteroid injections for work-related lower back pain (LBP) as the current evidence for the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine guidelines is considered insufficient to recommend this practice.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective study involving the patients who were treated with peri-articular and lower lumbar corticosteroid injections for work-related LBP at their occupational medicine clinic.
RESULTS: Sixty-four patients met the inclusion criteria. The average pain level was reduced fro

UNLABELLED: Traumatic spondyloptosis of the lumbar spine is an uncommon and severe clinical entity, which is defined as complete fracture dislocation and subluxation (>100%) of one vertebral body in the coronal or sagittal plane from its adjacent vertebra. In coronal spondyloptosis the subluxated vertebral bodies lie beside each other, and the condition is lateraloptosis.
CLINICAL CASE: A male patient aged 56 years had multiple injures with complete neurological deficit. Computed tomography(CT) revealed as spondyloptosis, which L2 detached from the rest of the spine, spinal canal stenosis, sa

OBJECTIVE: This prospective study aimed to evaluate the changes in the sagittal alignment after total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA) secondary to Crowe type-IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and whether THA would contribute to the relief of low-back pain (LBP).
METHODS: A total of 27 patients (2 men and 25 women) with bilateral hip OA secondary to Crowe type-IV DDH were enrolled in this study. Their mean age at the time of surgery was 40,36±12,35. All patients underwent simultaneous, bilateral THA between January 2015 and December 2016. Clinical asse

RATIONALE: We present a rare case of a traumatic intradural ruptured disc associated with a mild vertebral body compression fracture along with a review of the relevant medical literature. An intradural ruptured disc often occurs due to chronic degenerative diseases and is rarely due to trauma. It can cause irreversible neurological complications if the appropriate treatment is not planned.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old male presented with motor paraparesis (grade 3/5), right ankle dorsiflexion, and great toe dorsiflexion (grade 1/5), along with radiating pain at his right L4 and L5 sensory

Fracture-dislocation of the lower lumbar spine, which is commonly caused by high-impact trauma and can lead to instability in the spine, is relatively rare. Surgical treatment is indicated to restore spinal balance, weight-bearing ability, and decompression of the neural elements. There are various available surgical options, including the posterior-only or anterior-only approaches, or a combination of them. However, there is still no definite classification and treatment strategy for fracture-dislocation of the lower lumbar spine. In this report, we describe a 65-year-old man presenting cauda

OBJECTIVE: To design a novel prosthesis, a movable artificial lumbar complex (MALC), for non-fusion reconstruction after lumbar subtotal corpectomy and to evaluate the stability, range of motion and load-bearing strength in the human cadaveric lumbar spine.
METHODS: Biomechanical tests were performed on lumbar spine specimens from 15 healthy cadavers which were divided in three groups: non-fusion, fusion and intact group. The range of motion (ROM), stability and load-bearing strength were measured.
RESULTS: The prosthesis was composed of three parts: the upper and lower artificial lumbar dis

Traumatic events may lead to lumbar spine injuries ranging from low severity bony fracture to complex fracture dislocation. Injury pathomechanisms as well as the influence of loading rate and ligament mechanical properties were not yet fully elucidated. The objective was to quantify the influence of impact velocity and ligament properties variability on the lumbar spine response in traumatic flexion-shear conditions. An L1-L3 finite element spinal segment was submitted to a posterior-anterior impact at three velocities (2.7, 5, or 10 m/s) and for 27 sets of ligament properties. Spinal injury p

RATIONALE: Scoliosis is the most common form of dystrophic spinal deformities in type 1 neurofibromatosis, whereas a spontaneous rotational dislocation of the lumbar spine is a rare entity. Former researchers had advocated the use of circumferential fusion performed through combined anterior-posterior approaches as the mode of treatment of this situation, but we managed to achieve a solid circumferential fusion equally using posterior approach alone.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 51-year-old lady presented with severe back pain and no history of trauma, fever, or loss of weight. On examination, she sho

Given the close functional connection between the hip and the spine, their simultaneous degenerative pathology is a common problem seen in orthopedic patients and has been termed the "hip spine syndrome". Demographic change and an increasing number of operations have led to more patients who have undergone both total hip arthroplasty and spondylodesis especially of the lumbar spine. Studies have shown significant dislocation rates in this cohort of as high as almost 30%. Biomechanical studies and considerations show that spinal surgery directly influences the functional acetabular position and

Introduction Surgical site infection (SSI) is the most common healthcare-related infection in surgical patients. Patients who have undergone spinal surgeries and have contracted postoperative SSI face increased morbidity and mortality, which invariably leads to additional burden on the healthcare system and higher costs. The risk factors for the increase in SSI in patients who have undergone spinal surgery have been investigated in numerous studies but no studies have been performed in Malaysia. The aim of this pilot study is to determine the incidence and factors associated with deep SSIs in

BACKGROUND: The impact of prior lumbar spinal fusion on the change in physical activity level following total hip arthroplasty (THA) has not been thoroughly examined. Therefore, we sought to compare the change in physical activity level following THA for patients with and without a history of lumbar spine fusion.
METHODS: Patients who underwent primary elective THA were identified using an integrated healthcare system's Total Joint Replacement Registry (2010-2013). Prior lumbar spine fusion was identified using the healthcare system's Spine Registry. Physical activity was self-reported by pat

BACKGROUND: L3 vertebral fractures with posterior dislocation are rare and usually secondary to high-energy trauma. To assess the outcome of a valuable distraction technique, using long-tail multiaxial pedicle screw which we have employed in reduction of L3 vertebral fracture with posterior dislocation, and emphasize the importance of preoperative blood vessel evaluation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old patient fell from a height of 4 m and was paralyzed. Computed tomography scan revealed a three-column ligamentous injury with posterior fracture-dislocation of the L3 vertebral body. Computed
