This study sought to provide a comprehensive assessment of the incidence of sports injuries among athletes participating in the Olympic Winter Games and to investigate contributing factors. We gathered injury data from athletes participating in the recent four Olympic Winter Games, incorporating details on the sports event, sex, injury location, and type. Through a meta-analysis, we calculated the injury incidence rates for each sport and examined the influence of sex and the type of sport on these incidence rates. Out of 11,197 registered athletes, we documented 1,304 sports injuries. The spo

Stress injuries of bone in childhood and adolescence are the result of an imbalance between physical stress on the growing musculoskeletal system and its intrinsic resilience. Children who are very active in sports are particularly affected. The classical stress injuries mainly occur in the area of the lower leg, the metatarsus and the lower lumbar spine due to the disproportionate load on healthy bone; however, overuse syndromes can also occur in the area of the growth plates and possibly lead to growth plate disorders. The anamnesis usually shows stress-related pain that has existed for a lo

BACKGROUND: Patients who have spinal stiffness and deformity are at the highest risk for dislocation after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Previous reports of this cohort are limited to antero-lateral and postero-lateral (PL) approaches. We investigated the dislocation rate after direct anterior (DA) and PL approach THA with a contemporary high-risk protocol to optimize stability.
METHODS: We investigated patients undergoing THA who had preoperative biplanar imaging from January-December 2019. Patients were identified using radiographic criteria of spinal-stiffness (<10-degree change in sacral

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the relationship between spinal fusion and its effects on relative spinopelvic alignment in patients with prior total hip arthroplasty (THA) is critical. However, limited data exist on the effects of long spinal fusions on hip alignment in patients with a prior THA. Our objective was to compare clinical outcomes and changes in hip alignment between patients undergoing long fusion to the sacrum versus to the pelvis in the setting of prior THA.
METHODS: Patients with a prior THA who underwent elective thoracolumbar spinal fusion starting at L2 or above were retrospec

BACKGROUND: Patients who have prior lumbar spine fusion (LSF) have an increased risk for dislocation after total hip arthroplasty (THA). These patients also have elevated rates of opioid use. We aimed to evaluate the associated risk of dislocation after THA in patients who have prior LSF comparing those who have opioid use to those who do not.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review using a large national database of 246,617 primary and 34,083 revision THA cases from 2012 to 2019. There were 1,903 primary THA and 288 revision THA cases identified with LSF prior to THA. Postoperative hip disl

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction after lumbosacral fusion is high. Upfront bilateral SIJ fusion using novel fenestrated self-harvesting porous S2-alar iliac (S2AI) screws could reduce the incidence of SIJ dysfunction and need for subsequent SIJ fusion. In this study, the authors report their early clinical and radiographic results of SIJ fusion using this novel screw.
METHODS: The authors began using self-harvesting porous screws in July 2022. This is a retrospective review of consecutive patients at a single institution who underwent long thoracolumbar surgery w

BACKGROUND: There is increasing debate among orthopaedic surgeons over the temporal relationship between lumbar spinal fusion (LSF) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) for patients with hip-spine syndrome. Few large studies have directly compared the results of patients who undergo LSF prior to THA (LSF-THA) to those who undergo LSF after THA (THA-LSF). The current study matched THA patients with a prior LSF to patients who underwent LSF after THA to assess: 90-day and 1-year (1) medical/surgical complications; and (2) revisions.
METHODS: We queried a national, all-payer database to identify all

BACKGROUND: While there has been much interest in the increased dislocation rate in total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients with a lumbar spine fusion (LSF), there is minimal literature comparing the risk based on surgical approach. The purpose of this study was to determine if a direct anterior (DA) approach was protective against dislocation when compared to the anterolateral and posterior approaches in this high-risk patient population.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 6554 THAs performed at our institution from January 2011 to May 2021. 294 (4.5%) patients had a prior LSF an

PURPOSE: The number of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery after previous lumbar arthrodesis (LA) is rising. Literature suggests that LA may significantly impact pelvic biomechanics and potentially compromise the success of prosthetic hip replacement. This study aims to evaluate complication rates, dislocation rates, and revision rates in patients with prior LA undergoing THA surgery compared to those undergoing THA surgery without prior LA.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Met

A lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LTV) is a congenital anomaly of the spine and has been suggested to predispose to canine hip dysplasia (CHD). This retrospective, cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence of LTV and CHD among 14 dog breeds in Norway, the possible associations with risk factors, and whether LTV was a risk factor for the development of hip dysplasia. The results were based on evaluation of ventrodorsal radiographs from the CHD screening program from the Norwegian Kennel Club from February 2014 to January 2022. A total of 13,950 dogs were included in the study. For st

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spine pathology frequently coexists in patients who have hip arthrosis. There is controversy on whether lumbar or hip pathology should be first addressed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of sequential lumbar spine (LSP) or hip arthroplasty (THA).
METHODS: Using a large national database from 2010 to 2020, we reviewed the records of 241,279 patients who had concurrent hip arthritis and lumbar spine disease defined as spinal stenosis, lumbar radiculopathy, or degenerative disc disease. During the study period, 6,458 (2.7%) patients with concurrent hip/s

BACKGROUND: While stiffness of the lumbosacral spine is a known predictor of instability following total hip arthroplasty (THA), little is known about the medical- and surgical-related outcomes following THA in patients who have prior isolated sacroiliac (SI) joint arthrodesis.
METHODS: 197 patients who had a history of isolated SI joint arthrodesis who subsequently underwent elective primary THA for a diagnosis of osteoarthritis (THA-SI) from 2015 to 2021 were identified in a national administrative database. Using propensity score matching and logistic regression analyses, this cohort was c

Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are a leading cause of acute spinal injuries. Chronic spinal pathologies are common in the population. Thus, determining the incidence of different types of spinal injuries due to MVCs and understanding biomechanical mechanism of these injuries is important for distinguishing acute injuries from chronic degenerative disease. This paper describes methods for determining causation of spinal pathologies from MVCs based on rates of injury and analysis of the biomechanics require to produce these injuries. Rates of spinal injuries in MVCs were determined using two di

The partial skeleton of a 22-24-year old female from Liushui, Southern Silk Road, Xinjiang (China) was analyzed using morphological and biochemical methods. The most striking finding in this individual of a Late Bronze Age mounted nomadic population was the complete ossification of the caudal vertebral column including parts of the ligaments of this region due to chronic tuberculosis (Pott's disease). The morphological diagnosis is definitely confirmed by the results of the proteomic analysis. The bacterial protein Ag85 and, for the first time in archaeological skeletal remains, also ESAT-6 wa

(1) Background: Lumbosacral traumatic injuries are reported as 39% of canine vertebral lesions. This area is prone to fracture and luxation. Several surgical techniques were described from 1975 to 2021 to stabilize the traumatic injuries of the lumbosacral junction. This report aims to critically review the available literature focused on clinical presentation, surgical techniques, and follow-up of the lumbar vertebra fracture. (2) Methods: Three bibliographic databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus were used with a board search of Lumbosacral junction fracture AND, of L7 fracture AND (c

Hip-spine syndrome refers to concurrent hip and spine pathology with overlapping symptoms. Most of the literature has studied it in relation to total hip arthroplasty literature and has been shown to increase dislocation risk. Lumbar spine and pelvic mobility have been studied less frequently in relation to nonarthritic pathologic hip states. Understanding the biomechanical relationship between the lumbar spine, pelvis, and hip can help elucidate how hip-spine syndrome affects the nonarthritic hip and how it impacts outcomes of hip arthroscopy. Changes in lumbar spine motion may be the reason
