BACKGROUND: Although pelvic incidence (PI) is a key morphologic parameter in assessing spinopelvic sagittal alignment, accurate measurements of PI become difficult in patients with severe hip dislocation or femoral head deformities. This study aimed to investigate the reliability of our novel morphologic parameters and the correlations with established sagittal spinopelvic parameters.
METHODS: One hundred healthy volunteers (25 male and 75 female), with an average age of 38.9 years, were analysed. Whole-body alignment in the standing position was measured using a slot-scanning X-ray imager. W

Surgical stabilization of high-energy sacral avulsion fractures with spinopelvic dissociation places high demands on the surgeon. The goal is to achieve maximum stability while minimizing invasiveness. The present case of a dislocated U‑type fracture in a 25-year-old motocross rider exemplifies how a reduction with the targeted application of closed reduction techniques through hyperextension of the hip joints and lordosis in the lumbosacral hinge and through a standardized procedure in intraoperative fluoroscopic imaging, a minimally invasive stabilization by means of transsacral screw fixati

Acute traumatic spondylolisthesis in the lumbosacral spine is an uncommon injury. Traumatic dislocation of the fourth lumbar vertebra over the fifth lumbar vertebra (L4/L5) is extremely rare since few studies have been reported in the current literature. We report on a 53-year-old man, who had a motor vehicle accident and sustained an injury of the lumbar spine without neurological impairment. The radiographic evaluation disclosed an L4/L5 traumatic spondylolisthesis, classified as Meyerding grade III without any fracture of the posterior vertebral elements. To the best of our knowledge, this

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical case report.
PURPOSE: To report the rare case with post-operative chylous retroperitoneum after corrective surgery for adult spinal deformity.
METHODS: We present a case of a 73-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease. She sustained a severe split fracture subluxation of the L3 vertebra with AO Spine Thoracolumbar classification type CN2M2, resulting in severe kyphoscoliosis in global alignment. She underwent a two-stage 720-degree anteroposterior-combined corrective surgery with anterior vertebral column resection of L3 and posterior fusion from T4 to the pelvis. On p

CASE: A 41-year-old woman sustained a degloving injury over her lumbosacral and perineal region with fractures of her right tibia and fibula. After diversion colostomy and osteosynthesis for the fractures at a primary center, a missed grade 2 lumbosacral dislocation was diagnosed at a tertiary center and the degloving injury was treated with debridement and skin grafting. After 5 months, the dislocation had progressed to grade 4 and she underwent delayed posterior lumbosacral reduction, interbody fusion, and L4-S1 fixation, with superior gluteal artery perforator flap and subsequent colostomy

BACKGROUND: There are many lateral bending fracture cases presented in the literature that mostly involve facet dislocations or corpus collapse. In this report, we aim to describe a novel asymmetric lateral bending, flexion and distraction fracture, propose a mechanism, and delineate its clinical importance.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old girl arrived at our trauma center 12 hours after a head-on truck collision. She had paraplegia, and her imaging revealed a spinal cord avulsion at the T10 level and a horizontal fracture at the L4 spinous process, left lamina, left pedicle, and left posteri

AIMS: Some patients presenting with hip pain and instability and underlying acetabular dysplasia (AD) do not experience resolution of symptoms after surgical management. Hip-spine syndrome is a possible underlying cause. We hypothesized that there is a higher frequency of radiological spine anomalies in patients with AD. We also assessed the relationship between radiological severity of AD and frequency of spine anomalies.
METHODS: In a retrospective analysis of registry data, 122 hips in 122 patients who presented with hip pain and and a final diagnosis of AD were studied. Two observers anal

AIMS: Spinopelvic mobility plays an important role in functional acetabular component position following total hip arthroplasty (THA). The primary aim of this study was to determine if spinopelvic hypermobility persists or resolves following THA. Our second aim was to identify patient demographic or radiological factors associated with hypermobility and resolution of hypermobility after THA.
METHODS: This study investigated patients with preoperative posterior hypermobility, defined as a change in sacral slope (SS) from standing to sitting (ΔSSstand-sit) ≥ 30°. Radiological spinopelvic parame

INTRODUCTION: Posterior fracture-dislocation of fifth lumbar vertebra (L5) is a rare injury pattern. Existing Aihara classification system lacks its mention.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of posterior fracture-dislocation of L5 with comminuted fracture of body that presented with cauda equina syndrome. The smaller anteroinferior vertebral body fragment of L5 had its relationship maintained with sacrum, whereas the larger posterosuperior fragment of the body was retropulsed. Decompression and instrumented fusion through posterior approach yielded good clinical outcome.
DISCUSSION: We

BACKGROUND: Patients with reduced lumbar spine mobility are at higher risk of dislocation following total hip arthroplasty (THA). Therefore our study aimed to (1) define the optimal protocol for identifying patients with mobile hips and stiff lumbar spines and (2) determine clinical and standing radiographic parameters predicting these patients.
METHODS: A cohort of 113 patients with end-stage hip osteoarthritis awaiting THA was prospectively studied. Clinical data, patient-reported outcome measures, and spinopelvic radiographs were assessed with the patient in the standing, "relaxed-seated,"

We present a method of minimally invasive transcutaneous insertion of screws using a prefabricated extracorporeal navigation system using additive technologies (based on primary data obtained from the DICOM package in multi-detector computed tomography of the affected spine segment) according to the principle of personalized medicine. The method was tested on 10 dogs of different breeds with generally similar mechanism of trauma and typical consequences that led to fracture and dislocation of one of the lumbar vertebrae. In all animals, a positive treatment outcome of different degrees was ach

There are limited data on the longitudinal frequency and severity of the symptoms and complications of achondroplasia. We undertook a retrospective electronic chart review of 114 patients to develop a more thorough understanding of the lifetime impact of achondroplasia. Craniocervical stenosis (involving the foramen magnum with or without cervical vertebrae C1 and/or C2) was noted in nearly 50% of patients with craniovertebral junction imaging; however, corrective decompression surgery was only needed in 6% of patients. No children in our cohort died at 4 years of age or under. Kyphosis was pr

BACKGROUND: Cervical spine injury is a common result of traffic crashes, and such injuries range in severity from minor (i.e. sprain/strain) to moderate (intervertebral disk derangement) to serious and greater (fractures, dislocations, and spinal cord injuries). There are currently no reliable estimates of the number of crash-related spine injuries occurring in the US annually, although several publications have used national crash injury samples as a basis for estimating the frequency of both cervical and lumbar spinal disk injuries occurring in lower speed rear impact crashes.
