[Stress injuries of bone in children and adolescents].

Stress injuries of bone in childhood and adolescence are the result of an imbalance between physical stress on the growing musculoskeletal system and its intrinsic resilience. Children who are very active in sports are particularly affected. The classical stress injuries mainly occur in the area of the lower leg, the metatarsus and the lower lumbar spine due to the disproportionate load on healthy bone; however, overuse syndromes can also occur in the area of the growth plates and possibly lead to growth plate disorders. The anamnesis usually shows stress-related pain that has existed for a lo

Spinal injury rates and specific causation in motor vehicle collisions.

Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are a leading cause of acute spinal injuries. Chronic spinal pathologies are common in the population. Thus, determining the incidence of different types of spinal injuries due to MVCs and understanding biomechanical mechanism of these injuries is important for distinguishing acute injuries from chronic degenerative disease. This paper describes methods for determining causation of spinal pathologies from MVCs based on rates of injury and analysis of the biomechanics require to produce these injuries. Rates of spinal injuries in MVCs were determined using two di

Biomechanics evaluation of sacroiliac joint pain after lumbosacral fusion: A finite element analysis.

The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) constitutes the predominant pain source following lumbar or lumbosacral fusion. Although studies have investigated the biomechanical patterns of SIJ behaviors after lumbosacral fusion, the relationship between ligament strain and SIJ pain following lumbosacral fusion remains unclear. The present study developed a three-dimensional finite element model including L4, L5, sacrum, ilium, SIJ, and seven mainly ligaments. After successful validation, the model was used to investigate the biomechanics of SIJ and ligaments in simulating lumbosacral fusion process. Our result

The effectiveness of acupuncture at Yaotongdian (EX-UE 7) for acute lumbar sprain: A protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture at Yaotongdian (EX-UE 7) is increasingly used in acute lumbar sprain (ALS), and many studies have published that it is effective in the treatment of ALS. However, it is controversy if acupuncture at (EX-UE 7) can provide an evidence-based clinical benefit in the ALS population. METHODS: We will go through 8 databases, and conduct a systematic review of acupuncture on (EX-UE 7) and health-related outcomes in ALS patients according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews. The primary objective is to assess the impact of Preferred Reporting Items for Syste

Lumbar Spine and Lower Extremity Overuse Injuries.

Both lower extremities and lower back are common sources of injury for cyclists. For providers to optimize care within this area of sports medicine, they need to understand the most common sources of injury in this population. Cycling presents a unique challenge: treating both the athlete and the complex relationship between rider and bicycle. Physicians should not replace the role of a professional bike fitter and should view these individuals as integral members of the team to alleviate current and prevent future injury. This article explores common lower extremity and lumbar back overuse in

Estimating the number of traffic crash-related cervical spine injuries in the United States; An analysis and comparison of national crash and hospital data.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spine injury is a common result of traffic crashes, and such injuries range in severity from minor (i.e. sprain/strain) to moderate (intervertebral disk derangement) to serious and greater (fractures, dislocations, and spinal cord injuries). There are currently no reliable estimates of the number of crash-related spine injuries occurring in the US annually, although several publications have used national crash injury samples as a basis for estimating the frequency of both cervical and lumbar spinal disk injuries occurring in lower speed rear impact crashes. PURPOSE: To d

Injury risks among elite competitive alpine skiers are underestimated if not registered prospectively, over the entire season and regardless of whether requiring medical attention.

PURPOSE: Prospective studies assessing the injuries occurring in elite competitive alpine skiers are lacking, and a full picture of all injuries, including those not requiring medical attention, is absent. Likewise, little is known about the sex-specific injury risks and patterns of elite skiers throughout an entire season (i.e. an off-season preparation period and a competition period). Accordingly, this study investigated the injuries of a national team cohort with respect to season period and sex. METHODS: Over an entire season, all injuries occurring in 44 Swiss National Ski Team members

How the clinical dosage of bone cement biomechanically affects adjacent vertebrae.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the biomechanical changes in the adjacent vertebrae under a physiological load (500 N) when the clinically relevant amount of bone cement was injected into fractured cadaver vertebral bodies. METHODS: The embalmed cadaver thoracolumbar specimens in which each vertebral body (T12-L2) had a BMD of < 0.75 g/cm2 were used for the experiment. For establishing a fracture model, the upper one third of the L1 vertebra was performed wedge osteotomy and the superior endplate was kept complete. Stiffness of specimens was measured in different states. Strain of the adjacen

Three dimensional finite element analysis used to study the influence of the stress and strain of the operative and adjacent segments through different foraminnoplasty technique in the PELD: Study protocol clinical trial (SPIRIT Compliant).

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar disectomy (PELD) is one of the most popular minimally invasive techniques of spinal surgery in recent years. At present, there are 2 main surgical approaches in PELD: foraminal approach and interlaminar approach. What's more, foraminoplasty is a necessary step for both approaches. However, there are few biomechanical studies on the formation of different parts of the intervertebral foramen. The aim of this study is to explore the effects of different foraminoplasty methods on the biomechanics of the corresponding and adjacent segments of the lumbar

The Thoracic Spine in the Overhead Athlete.

Overhead athletes are susceptible to many injuries, particularly in the shoulder and lumbar spine. Due to the heterogeneity of these two regional injuries, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact origin. A potential contributing factor that should be thoroughly evaluated is the thoracic spine. It can be challenging to quantify exactly how much thoracic spine mobility or lack thereof plays a role toward injury. Despite this, when examining mechanics of an overhead athlete, if neuromuscular control of the thorax is impaired, adjacent motion segments often take the brunt of the required movements.

Ergonomics and musculoskeletal disorders in neurosurgery: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a growing and probably undervalued concern for neurosurgeons and spine surgeons, as they can impact their quality of life and career length. This systematic review aims to ascertain this association and to search for preventive measures. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-P-based review on ergonomics and WMSDs in neurosurgery over the last 15 years. Twelve original articles were included, of which 6 focused on spine surgery ergonomics, 5 cranio-facial surgery (mainly endoscopic), and one on both domains. RESULTS: We found a huge meth
