Fasciola gigantica fatty acid binding protein (FABP) as a prophylactic agent against Schistosoma mansoni infection in CD1 mice.

Although schistosomicidal drugs and other control measures exist, the advent of an efficacious vaccine remains the most potentially powerful means for controlling this disease. In this study, native fatty acid binding protein (FABP) from Fasciola gigantica was purified from the adult worm's crude extract by saturation with ammonium sulphate followed by separation on DEAE-Sephadex A-50 anion exchange chromatography and gel filtration using Sephacryl HR-100, respectively. CD1 mice were immunized with the purified, native F. gigantica FABP in Freund's adjuvant and challenged subcutaneously with 1

The influence of reproductive physiology and nutrient supply on the periparturient relaxation of immunity to the gastrointestinal nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis in Merino ewes.

A pen experiment was conducted to investigate the interaction of early-weaning and nutrient supply on the periparturient relaxation of immunity to the gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) Trichostrongylus colubriformis in Merino ewes. Mixed-age pregnant and non-pregnant (dry) ewes were infected with 8,000 T. colubriformis L(3)/week, and fed either a high or low quality diet. Following parturition, lambs were either removed from their mothers at 2 days of age or allowed to continue suckling. Systemic immunity began to wane during late pregnancy with circulating eosinophils and plasma total antibody

The effect of repeated, four-weekly eprinomectin treatment on milk production in pasture-based, seasonally-calving dairy cattle.

A randomised clinical trial from the North Island of New Zealand was conducted to assess the effect of repeated anthelmintic treatment on milk production, and to assess factors that affect treatment response. Nine hundred and twenty three multiparous, lactating dairy cattle from three pasture-based, spring-calving dairy herds were enrolled in this trial. Within each herd, cattle were stratified on age and calving date, and were randomly allocated to treatment (n=319) or control (n=604) groups. The treatment group received ≥ 0.05 mg/kg of topical eprinomectin every 28 days for eight treatments

Molecular identification and characterization of leucine aminopeptidase 2, an excretory-secretory product of Clonorchis sinensis.

Aminopeptidases serve vital roles in metabolism of hormones, neurotransmission, turnover of proteins and immunological regulations. Leucine aminopeptidases catalyze the hydrolysis of amino-acid residues from the N-terminus of proteins and peptides. In the present study, leucine aminopeptidase 2 (LAP2) gene of Clonorchis sinensis (C. sinensis) was isolated and identified from an adult cDNA library of C. sinensis. Recombinant CsLAP2 was expressed and purified in Escherichia coli BL21. The open reading frame of LAP2 contains 1,560 bp equivalent to 519 amino acids, a similarity analysis showed a r

Mixed trichuroid infestation in a dog from Italy.

BACKGROUND: Capillaria aerophila, Capillaria boehmi and Trichuris vulpis are trichuroid nematodes affecting wild and companion animals all over the World. The canine intestinal whipworm, T. vulpis, is the most common and well- known in veterinary practice, whereas the respiratory C. aerophila and C. boehmi have been rarely reported in pets as a likely consequence of overlapping morphometric and morphological features of the eggs, which impair a correct etiological diagnosis. FINDINGS: In December 2011, a mixed infestation by T. vulpis, C. aerophila and C. boehmi was diagnosed in an asymptomat

Deworming drugs for soil-transmitted intestinal worms in children: effects on nutritional indicators, haemoglobin and school performance.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends treating all school children at regular intervals with deworming drugs in areas where helminth infection is common. The WHO state this will improve nutritional status, haemoglobin, and cognition and thus will improve health, intellect, and school attendance. Consequently, it is claimed that school performance will improve, child mortality will decline, and economic productivity will increase. Given the important health and societal benefits attributed to this intervention, we sought to determine whether they are based on reliable evide

Praziquantel treatment of school children from single and mixed infection foci of intestinal and urogenital schistosomiasis along the Senegal River Basin: monitoring treatment success and re-infection patterns.

Following major water development schemes in the 1980s, schistosomiasis has become a serious parasitic disease of children living in the Senegal River Basin. Both urogenital (Schistosoma haematobium) and intestinal (Schistosoma mansoni) schistosomiasis can be highly prevalent in school-aged children, with many individuals infected with both parasites. In order to investigate the transmission and re-infection dynamics of both parasite species, single and mixed infection foci at three villages (Nder and Temeye; S. mansoni and S. haematobium foci and Guia; S. haematobium focus) were studied. In vitro influence of temperature on the biological control activity of the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans against Haemonchus contortus in sheep.

Recently, research for alternative methods to combat gastrointestinal parasites has increased, and the biological control activity of the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans stands out. In this study, the possible influence of temperature on the nematophagous activity of D. flagrans, after gastrointestinal passage, against Haemonchus contortus in sheep was analysed. Four female sheep, between 2 and 3 years of age and weighing between 40 and 50 kg, were used. Two sheep were parasitised with H. contortus, while two other sheep were dewormed. Before the collection of faeces, one of the dewormed animals

Environmental epidemiology of intestinal schistosomiasis and genetic diversity of Schistosoma mansoni infections in snails at Bugoigo village, Lake Albert.

Intestinal schistosomiasis continues to be hyper-endemic in the fishing community of Bugoigo located on the eastern shore of Lake Albert, Uganda. Our study aimed to identify the factors that determine the local distribution and abundance of Biomphalaria, as well as infection(s) with Schistosoma mansoni inclusive of their genetic diversity. In addition, a DNA barcoding approach was taken to genotype schistosome cercariae, exploring the micro-epidemiology of infections. Over a 3-week period in June-July 2010, several hundred Biomphalaria spp. were collected, together with environmental informati

Factors affecting disease manifestation of toxocarosis in humans: genetics and environment.

Toxocara canis is regarded as the main cause of human toxocarosis but the relative contribution of T. cati is probably underestimated; serological and other diagnostic methods used in most studies of this zoonotic disease do not distinguish between the two parasites. The definitive hosts for T. canis are caniidae. Pups generally have higher infection rates than adult animals and are a major source of eggs in the environment. Humans usually acquire T. canis infection by accidental ingestion of embryonated eggs or encapsulated larvae from the environment or contaminated food, such infections may

Facing the threat of equine parasitic disease.

Horses worldwide are exposed to a complex mixture of intestinal parasitic helminths. When burdens are high, these parasites can seriously compromise health and welfare. Some helminth species have an extremely high prevalence and are difficult to control, not least because there is a limited understanding of their most basic biology. Furthermore, levels of resistance to some of the commonly used anthelmintics are widespread and increasing. The cyathostomins are the most common nematode species affecting equids worldwide. Within this group of parasites are more than 50 different species. Until r

Imaging diagnosis-heterobilharzia americana infection in a dog.

An approximately three-year-old mixed breed female dog was evaluated for peritoneal effusion, anorexia, intermittent vomiting, and diarrhea. Radiographically, there was mineralization of the wall of small intestinal segments. Sonographic findings were consistent with multisystemic mineralization of liver, small intestinal wall, and pancreas. Multifocal granulomas containing schistosome eggs (Heterobilharzia americana) were identified histologically. The mineralization pattern described herein is an uncommon presentation of severe diffuse heterobilharziasis in a dog.
