Trichuriasis, a well-known type of soil-transmitted helminthiasis, is a neglected gastrointestinal nematode disease predominantly affecting children in tropical regions and is caused by Trichuris trichiura. The potential zoonotic transmission of this disease is indicated by its presence in nonhuman primates. Chronic infection leads to mucosal damage, bacterial translocation, and intense inflammatory infiltration; however, the progression of these processes remains poorly understood. This study tracks the acute phase of experimental trichuriasis, providing detailed insights into nematode tissue

Intestinal and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are significant public health concerns in Somalia and are driven by poor sanitation, contaminated water, and inadequate hygiene practices. This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence and intensity of intestinal and soil-transmitted helminth infections among school-aged children in the Deyniile and Kahda internally displaced persons camps. A well-structured questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic, behavioral and environmental data from the respondents, while fresh stool samples were collected to detect helminths via the

Parasite infection is one key risk inherent in group living and is considered to influence the formation and evolution of animal societies. Previous studies investigating the relationship between sociability (a measure of an individual's level of social engagement) and parasite infection have yielded mixed results, with some observing positive relationships between social network centrality and infection and others observing negative or no sociability-infection links. Here, we aggregated behavioral and parasitological data from three groups of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta brevicaudus) in Ch

Gastrointestinal helminths, including cestodes and nematodes, represent significant health and economic challenges to the poultry industry due to their pathogenic impact on chickens. Despite the substantial risks they pose, limited research has focused on these parasitic infections. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2023 to June 2024 in the South Gondar zone to determine the prevalence, distribution, and identify the parasitic gastrointestinal helminthes in chickens. A total of 418 chickens were randomly selected from study districts and subjected to faecal examination

BACKGROUND: Intestinal helminthiasis remains a significant public health concern in Bangladesh, affecting both humans and animals. Conventional copromicroscopic methods, though widely used, often lack sensitivity, particularly in areas with low prevalence and intensity of infection. ParaEgg, a new diagnostic tool, has been developed to improve the efficiency of copromicroscopic detection. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ParaEgg in detecting intestinal helminth infections in humans and dogs compared to commonly used traditional methods.
METHODS: A cross-sectional stu

Hookworms are blood-sucking intestinal parasites that can cause anaemia and protein loss in humans. Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a zoonotic hookworm species of dogs, is the second most common cause of human hookworm infections. With the increasing anthelmintic resistance risks and the uncontrolled stray dog population in Sarawak Borneo, East Malaysia, understanding the genetic structure of A. ceylanicum is crucial for tracking mutation patterns and assessing zoonotic transmission risks. This study determined the prevalence and genetic diversity of dog hookworm species using microscopy, PCR and sequ

Two exemplary cases of mixed urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis in Malawi show hybridizations of Schistosoma mattheei with S. haematobium and S. mansoni, indicating newly emerging genetic diversity. Complex egg excretion patterns in feces expose current diagnostic gaps and alert to future sampling needs for effective surveillance of zoonotic schistosomiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Cysteine proteases from Clonorchis sinensis, including various proteins, are essential for its pathogenicity and serve as potential vaccine candidates. This study assesses the protective effects of three C. sinensis cysteine proteases (CsCP1-3).
METHODS: Mice immunized with recombinant CsCP1-3 and adjuvants were subsequently infected with C. sinensis metacercariae after three immunization rounds. Liver damage was evaluated through hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson's trichrome, and immunohistochemical analyses. The levels of IgG1, IgG2a antibodies, and cytokines (IFN-g, IL-2, I

Anoplocephala perfoliata is the most common equine tapeworm infection. This parasite is found at the small/large intestinal junction and has been associated with colic. The cestode has an indirect lifecycle involving oribatid mite intermediate hosts, though little is known of its epidemiology. This study aimed to monitor seasonal fluctuations in pasture oribatid mite numbers and the presence of Anoplocephala spp. DNA in mite samples collected from three equine premises in the UK. Exposure to infection in resident horses was assessed by measuring tapeworm-specific salivary antibodies. The data

Strongyles, especially non-migratory Strongylidae, are the most common equine gut parasites, and typically occur in mixed infections with 10 - 20 species per host. Current knowledge on strongyle species prevalence and within-host tropism is sparse. Herein species composition of mixed strongyle infections of 12 naturally infected untreated young horses, based on strongyle eggs extracted from faeces, cultured third stage larva and luminal worms collected from ventral and dorsal colon was examined. Species were identified using a cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) metabarcoding approach allowing differ

Gastrointestinal helminths remain a major constraint to poultry production worldwide, causing significant economic losses and threatening food security. In Egypt, the molecular and phylogenetic data on Raillietina echinobothrida and Ascaridia galli are limited in domestic chickens. This study investigated the prevalence, morphology, and genetic characterization of these helminths infecting domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) in Gharbia province, Egypt. Between April 2018 and March 2019, 150 intestinal tracts were collected from slaughterhouses and poultry processing facilities. Helmin

BACKGROUND: The potential of schistosomiasis to spread across borders, coupled with the considerable delay by which infected travellers and migrants are diagnosed in Europe, calls for better surveillance of the distribution of this disease. This study explored the geographical origin and genetic profiles of Schistosoma infections imported into Europe and diagnosed in a network of 11 European centres specialized in traveller and migrant health.
METHODS: Genetic profiles were obtained from DNA extracted from concentrated Schistosoma eggs or Schistosoma-positive samples (faeces, urine, biopsy) c

Trichinellosis is a globally distributed zoonotic parasitic disease. The Trichinella infective larvae migrate through the intestine after ingestion and settle in muscles, thus intestinal mucosal immunity plays a vital role against early infection with Trichinella. In this study, a recombinant adenovirus vector expressing the cysteine protease inhibitor of Trichinella spiralis (rAd5TsCLP) was constructed and combined with the recombinant protein rTsCLP in a heterologous prime-boost regimen. The regimen elicits strong, specific, and neutralizing antibodies in BALB/c mice, significantly enhancing

BACKGROUND: After ivermectin became available, diethylcarbamazine (DEC) use was discontinued because of severe adverse reactions, including ocular reactions, in individuals with high Onchocerca volvulus microfilaridermia (microfilariae/mg skin, SmfD). Assuming long-term ivermectin use led to < 5 SmfD with little or no eye involvement, DEC + ivermectin + albendazole treatment a few months after ivermectin was proposed. In 2018, the US FDA approved moxidectin for treatment of O. volvulus infection. The Phase 3 study evaluated SmfD, microfilariae in the anterior chamber (mfAC) and adverse events

Raillietina species and Ascaridia galli are two of the significant intestinal parasites that affect chickens in a free-range system production. They destroy the intestinal mucosa layer, leading to several clinical symptoms such as weight loss, a slowed growth rate, and economic value loss. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop an assay for simultaneously detecting Raillietina spp. (R. echinobothrida, R. tetragona, and R. cesticillus) and A. galli in a single reaction using duplex loop-mediated isothermal amplification (dLAMP) coupled with a lateral flow dipstick (LFD) assay. The ana

BACKGROUND: The health and productivity of dairy goats continue to be impacted by gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) and lungworms (LW). Eprinomectin (EPN) is frequently selected for treatment because it is generally effective and does not require a milk withdrawal period. However, some factors, such as lactation, can have an impact on EPN pharmacokinetics and potentially its efficacy. To evaluate whether this can alter the efficacy of Eprecis® 2%, an eprinomectin injectable solution, a study was performed in lactating goats using the dose currently registered in cattle, sheep and goats (0.2 mg/

Sustainable parasite control practices are necessary to combat the negative effects of gastrointestinal nematodes on animal health and production while reducing the selection pressure for anthelmintic resistance. Parasite diagnostic tests can inform treatment decisions, the timing and effectiveness of treatment and enable livestock breeding programmes. In recent years new diagnostic methods have been developed, some incorporating machine learning (ML), to facilitate the detection and enumeration of parasite eggs. It is important to understand the technical characteristics and performance of su

Parasitic helminth Trichinella spiralis (Ts) induce mixed Th1/Th2 response with predominant type 2 immune responses, with protective immunity mediated by interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and IL-13. β-Glucan (BG) has been shown to have the ability to induce trained immunity, confers non-specific protection from secondary infections. However, whether BG-induced trained immunity played a role in protective type 2 immunity against Ts infection is unclear. In this study, BG was administered five days before Ts infection to induce trained immunity. Our findings demonstrate that BG pretreatment effectively
