Detection of active vasodilatory compounds from hawthorn: Screening and determination of mechanism of action.

Hawthorn is known to reduce arterial blood pressure in humans, but the active component remains unidentified. The vasoactivity of twenty-one substances contained in hawthorn (flavonoids, glycosides, pentacyclic triterpenes) and absorbable metabolites (small phenolic acids) was tested on three types of isolated blood vessels from two species. Isorhamnetin and tamarixetin induced vasodilatation of porcine coronary arteries (EC50 values were 21.7 and 30.9 μM, respectively), rat aorta (16.7 and 23.3 μM), and rat mesenteric arteries (22.2 and 16.8 μM). These values are higher than the typical human

Neural network assessment of aortic, iliac, renal, and mesenteric artery calcification in CTA: Normalized scoring framework and comparison to threshold-based method.

BACKGROUND: Calcification of abdominal arteries is an important risk marker in vascular disease. Automated, objective quantification methods could improve reproducibility and reduce observer dependency in clinical practice. PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a deep learning method for quantifying abdominal arterial calcification from contrast-enhanced CT angiography (CTA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively collected 223 CTA volumes, divided into 147 training and 76 test cases. Ground truth calcification segmentations were manually annotated, while vessel segmentations were generated by

LEFT HEMICOLECTOMY IN PATIENTS WITH COLORECTAL CANCER: SURGICAL VIEW ON INFERIOR MESENTERIC ARTERY ANATOMY VARIABILITY.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Vascular structures may be damaged during laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer. One of the major reasons is the variant anatomy of the inferior mesenteric artery. It could lead to intraoperative massive bleeding and also postoperative intestinal ischemia. Thus, preoperative study of the inferior mesenteric artery variant anatomy is very important. AIM: Our aim is to develop a clinical - based and useful classification of inferior mesenteric artery variability for healthcare practitioners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From December 2019 to March 2023, 214 abdominal

Genetic Evaluation in Symptomatic Spontaneous Isolated Superior Mesenteric Artery Dissection.

To explore the contribution of genetic risk factors to isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection (ISMAD), this study detected variations in known arterial dissection-related genes in a cohort of patients with symptomatic ISMAD. Thirty-two patients were recruited. Whole-exome sequencing was conducted on blood samples from all participants and 83 controls. Prevalence, clinical characteristics, treatments, and causative gene carriers were also studied. Eleven (34.4%) patients with ISMAD had pathogenic variants in COL3A1 (n = 3), COL12A1 (n = 3), TLN1 (n = 1), FN1 (n = 2), and TNXB (n = 2). P

Assessing the severity of ischemic colitis: validation of a CT scan severity score in 174 consecutive patients.

OBJECTIVES: To validate a previously published CT-based severity score of ischemic colitis and to propose a potential improvement by assessing severity using clinical, biological, and CT criteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included 174 patients (mean age, 73 ± 12 years; 85 men) with ischemic colitis diagnosed between 2014 and 2023. All underwent contrast-enhanced CT. Severe ischemic colitis was defined by death within 1 month, necrosis at colonoscopy, surgery, or superior mesenteric artery stenting. Clinical, biological, and CT features were compared betwee

Tacrolimus Induced Hypertension and Vascular Remodeling Includes Mechanisms of Cellular Senescence-The Protective Effect of Valsartan.

AIM: Calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) such as tacrolimus (Tac) are the first-line treatment to prevent transplant rejection. However, CNI have adverse effects on blood vessels and renal function, which may be linked to cellular senescence. Valsartan, a common angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) blocker, exhibits anti-senescence properties. We tested the hypothesis that tacrolimus causes hypertension and microvascular remodeling that involves induction of senescence, and that valsartan is protective. METHODS: Microperfusion and wire myography were employed to assess the contractile and dilatory

Estrogen treatment restores perivascular adipose tissue -mediated anticontractile effect via NOX4-dependent hydrogen peroxide signaling in ovariectomized hypertensive rats.

INTRODUCTION/AIM: Reduced endogenous estrogen increases NADPH oxidase-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) and promotes vascular dysfunction. Although estrogen treatment restores vascular redox balance, its direct impact on perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) function in hypertension remains unclear. We tested the hypothesis that estrogen attenuates vascular contraction in ovariectomized spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) by enhancing NOX4-derived hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) signaling in PVAT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Vascular reactivity, western blotting, RT- PCR, and H 2 O 2 levels were pe

Diagnosis and management of nutcracker syndrome: Nursing considerations and a review of current practice.

Nutcracker Syndrome (NCS), the symptomatic manifestation of left renal vein (LRV) compression-commonly between the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery (SMA)-presents with a range of nonspecific symptoms including hematuria and flank or abdominal pain. Due to the vague clinical presentation, diagnosis is often delayed. Clinicians, particularly vascular nurses and advanced practice providers (APPs) should include NCS in the differential when evaluating unexplained hematuria and atypical abdominal or flank pain. Enhancing familiarity with diagnostic criteria for vascular nurses and

Ruptured Superior Mesenteric Artery Pseudoaneurysm With Hemorrhagic Shock Secondary to Infectious Colitis: A Case Report.

Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) pseudoaneurysms are rare, life-threatening vascular abnormalities most often linked to trauma, infection, or iatrogenic injury. Rupture can cause massive hemorrhage and bowel hypoperfusion. We report a unique case of SMA pseudoaneurysm rupture in the setting of infectious colitis, complicated by secondary ischemic colitis. A 66-year-old female with a history of diverticulitis initially presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain and diarrhea, and CT imaging demonstrated non-specific colitis. She was discharged in stable condition with outpatient s

Olmesartan-associated enteropathy presenting with metabolic acidosis and acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis: a rechallenge-confirmed case.

Olmesartan-associated enteropathy (OAE) is a delayed-onset drug-induced intestinal disorder that mimics celiac disease and may cause severe diarrhea, electrolyte imbalance, and prerenal acute kidney injury (AKI). Although rare, recognition is essential because timely drug withdrawal is curative. An 82-year-old man on long-term olmesartan therapy developed one month of watery diarrhea, weight loss, and hypotension, leading to hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis and severe AKI (serum creatinine (Cr) 6.77 mg/dL). Symptoms resolved after discontinuation of olmesartan. After discharge, olmesartan was

[18F]FB(ePEG12)12-Exendin-4 positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging for precise preoperative localization of a pancreatic-head insulinoma: a case report with review of literature.

Insulinomas are rare functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors that cause hypoglycemia from inappropriate insulin secretion. Surgical resection is curative but hinges on accurate preoperative localization. Conventional imaging with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging may miss small lesions, and invasive tests such as endoscopic ultrasound tissue acquisition and the selective arterial calcium stimulation test, while informative, are operator-dependent and not invariably conclusive. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor-targeted positron emission tomography has emerged as a sensitive

Retrieval of an incidentally found migrated temporary epicardial pacing wire in the superior mesenteric artery of an elderly male patient in the Northeastern United States years post heart transplant: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Temporary epicardial pacing wires (TEPWs) are utilized for arrhythmia management in postoperative cardiac surgery. TEPWs that cannot be removed are sometimes left in situ, which can lead to rare complications such as vessel stenosis and thrombosis. This case report describes the use of small biopsy forceps advanced to the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) through a steerable sheath to remove a partially endothelialized TEPW. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old man with a history of orthotopic heart transplantation presented for routine follow-up 2 years post-transplant. Imaging reve

Wire Myography for Dorsal Aorta and Mesenteric Resistance Arteries from Mice and Rats.

Wire myography is a widely used ex vivo technique for the quantitative assessment of vascular function in isolated arteries. Because large conduit and small resistance arteries differ fundamentally in structure and physiological role, analyzing both vessel classes in parallel using arteries harvested from the same mouse or rat enables paired comparisons that reduce inter-animal variability and reveal vessel-specific functional changes. This article presents a step-by-step protocol for assessing vascular reactivity in isolated murine conduit and resistance arteries using isometric wire myograph

Etiology and management outcomes of inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm.

OBJECTIVE: Inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms (IMAAs) are extremely rare, and their natural history and treatment outcomes are poorly understood. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of consecutive patients with IMAAs treated at a multistate health system between November 2005 and August 2025. Demographics, etiology, imaging features, treatment, and outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: There were 15 patients (11 male; mean age, 66 ± 15 years), and all these patients were diagnosed on computed tomography angiography. Presentation was with nonspecific abdominal pain in nine patients (88%

Hybrid open and endovascular retrograde suction thrombectomy and stenting for acute proximal superior mesenteric artery thrombosis.

We describe hybrid retrograde suction thrombectomy and stenting via open mesenteric exposure for acute proximal superior mesenteric artery thrombosis. A 74-year-old female with multiple comorbidities presented with 12 hours of severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Imaging revealed proximal superior mesenteric artery thrombosis with complete occlusion and distal reconstitution. Emergent hybrid laparotomy with retrograde suction thrombectomy achieved complete clot extraction, with subsequent stenting. At 6-week follow-up, the patient was asymptomatic with a patent stent on mesen

Extranodal Rosai-Dorfman Disease Presenting as a Pancreatic Mass Associated With Superior Mesenteric Artery Thrombosis.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare, nonmalignant histiocytic disease that classically presents as bulky lymphadenopathy. Although RDD can be seen in various organ systems, gastrointestinal involvement is uncommon. We present a case of RDD involving the pancreatic head causing biliary obstruction, arterial thrombus, abdominal pain, and concern for malignancy. Endoscopic ultrasound and pancreas biopsy demonstrated a mass without malignant features and pathological features including benign pancreatic parenchyma, noncaseating granulomas, and mixed acute and chronic inflammation including histi
