Molecular Characterization of Superoxide Dismutase and Its Putative Relationship With Drug Resistance in Eimeria Tenella.

Avian coccidiosis, an intestinal parasitic disease caused by Eimeria spp., remains one of the most economically significant diseases in poultry. Although anticoccidial drugs have been effective in controlling coccidiosis, the emergence of drug resistance in Eimeria poses a persistent challenge to disease management. Our previous study revealed differential expression of superoxide dismutase (EtSOD) between drug-sensitive (DS) and drug-resistant Eimeria tenella strains. In this study, qPCR and western blot analyses demonstrated that EtSOD expression was significantly upregulated in diclazuril-r

Gastrointestinal Parasites of Wild Birds in Mexico: A Synthetic Review of the Current Knowledge and Approaches for Bird Parasitological Studies.

Parasites are part of ecosystems and can regulate populations. The diseases they cause may negatively impact wildlife, sometimes linked to the imbalance created by anthropogenic environmental changes. Mexico harbors more than 10% of the world's avifauna, but there have been few studies on gastrointestinal (GIT) parasites in wild birds of Mexico. The aim of this review was to provide a comprehensive summary of knowledge on GIT parasites of Mexican wild birds and offer suggestions for approaches for future parasitological research on birds in Mexico. We analyzed 85 documents reporting gastrointe

Intestinal Parasites of Zoonotic Significance in Human and Domestic Animals in a Rural Setting in Nepal.

Intestinal parasitic (IP) species with zoonotic significance are major public health issues, mostly prevalent in developing countries, leading to high morbidity and mortality. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of IP species in humans and domestic animals, compare and contrast the zoonotic potentialities and investigate the associated factors in the Solukhumbu District, Nepal. The fresh faecal samples from humans (N = 200), cattle (N = 20), dogs (N = 20) and pigs (N = 20) were collected using a non-invasive purposive sampling method, preserved in 2.5% potassium dichromate, and ex

Heligmosomid infections in bank voles are associated with higher prevalence and greater abundance of other helminth species.

The heligmosomid nematodes Heligmosomum mixtum and Heligmosomoides glareoli are dominant helminths infecting bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) in the temperate forests of NE Poland. Both are relatively long-lived species that accumulate in hosts with increasing host age. Based on studies showing that the closely related species, Heligmosomoides bakeri is immunomodulatory in murine hosts, we hypothesized that heligmosomid-infected bank voles should show higher prevalence and abundance with other helminths. To test this hypothesis, we analysed a database containing quantitative data on helmin

Next-Gen intestinal parasite detection: Leveraging metataxonomics for improved diagnosis of intestinal protists and helminths.

Intestinal parasites continue to pose a significant public health burden in low- and middle-income countries and are increasingly recognized in developed regions. Traditional diagnostic methods, primarily based on microscopy, remain widely used despite limitations in sensitivity and taxonomic resolution. In this exploratory study, we applied a next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based metataxonomic approach, integrated with classical phylogenetic methods, to characterize intestinal parasites in rural Colombian populations. We compare its performance with conventional microscopy, focusing on both

Temperature and Rainfall Associate With Patterns of Parasitism in Free-Ranging Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus imitator).

Ecological variables such as climate and habitat composition can impact the infection patterns of gastrointestinal parasites in animal host populations by affecting host behavior and parasite survivability and distribution in the external environment. Data from wild primate populations provide insights into these processes. To contribute new insights from a well-characterized population, we collected 200 fecal samples from five groups of Costa Rican capuchin monkeys from August 2020 to August 2021 and screened them for gastrointestinal parasites. We estimated annual home range sizes for the gr

Structure of Intestinal Helminths in Rhytiodus microlepis (Characiformes: Anostomidae): Distribution, Histopathology and Relationships With Seasonal Dynamics of an Amazonian Floodplain Lake.

The composition and structure of the helminth fauna in the intestine of the anostomid fish Rhytiodus microlepis was studied during two distinct periods in a floodplain lake in Central Amazonia. Additionally, the tissue damage in the infected intestine caused by the endoparasites was observed. Of the 38 fish analysed, a high prevalence of infection by Digenea (metacercariae) and Acanthocephala (> 90%) was observed; the metacercariae preferred the initial portions of the intestine, with a high frequency of occurrence in the lamina propria of the mucosa (75.9%), while the acanthocephalans occurre

Schistosoma japonicum infection: clinical significance of ultrasound findings.

Schistosoma japonicum infection can cause severe hepatic complications associated with portal hypertension, which may lead to death by bleeding from esophageal varices. Ultrasonography (US) enables the identification of two different types of liver fibrosis characteristic for S. japonicum infection: interseptal fibrosis (ISF) and portal fibrosis (PF). To date, these two forms of liver fibrosis have not been sufficiently investigated with regard to their potential to cause portal hypertension. Among the 121 reports published, only 56 (46.3%) distinguish between ISF and PF. In 31/56 (55.4%) of t

Prevalence and determinants of intestinal parasitic infections among children under five years attending Bule Hora University Teaching Hospital, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) remain a significant public health issue, especially among young children in developing countries, and they contribute to illness and death. Factors such as poor hygiene, inadequate sanitation, and limited access to clean water worsen the spread of these infections. This study aims to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites (IPs) and identify related risk factors among children under five years old at Bule Hora University Teaching Hospital (BHUTH) in Southern Ethiopia, addressing an important gap in current research. METHODS: A facili

Detection of intestinal parasites from feces of captive ophidians in Mexico.

Ophidians host a wide range of pathogens, including many parasite species, some of which may be of public health concern because they can infect other animal species and humans. Herpetariums house snakes in captivity as part of ex-situ conservation initiatives aimed at preserving threatened species. However, stress, immunosuppression, and limited space increase the risk of parasitic infections, including zoonotic diseases. Here, we detect the presence of intestinal parasites in ophidian species housed under conditions of captivity. Twenty specimens representing sixteen species were examined us

Frequency and predictive role of intestinal parasitic infections with irritable bowel syndrome in Egyptian patients: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of gut-brain interaction with multifactorial pathophysiology, including post-infectious mechanisms. In endemic regions, intestinal parasitic infections remain highly frequent and may contribute to persistent gastrointestinal symptoms; however, their role in IBS is often under-recognized and insufficiently studied. This study aimed to compare the frequency and species distribution of intestinal parasitic infections among IBS patients and healthy controls and to evaluate their independent association with IBS in an endemic setting.

Arginine metabolism has a pivotal function for the encystation of Giardia duodenalis.

Arginine metabolism plays a key role in the energy metabolism of the intestinal parasite Giardia duodenalis, an amitochondrial protozoan that infects humans and animals and causes significant morbidity. Despite that an arginine deiminase (ADI) has been implicated in virulence, it remains unknown if ADI allele variants from the different genetic G. duodenalis subgroups (assemblages) differ in function. Here, the hypothesis was tested that sequence variation detected between G. duodenalis ADI alleles from the two G. duodenalis assemblage types found in humans affects functional parameters of the

Dientamoeba fragilis: a story of contradictions.

Dientamoeba fragilis is a gastrointestinal parasite of controversial clinical significance. From its discovery until today, contradictory articles have been published on whether infection is correlated with symptoms, treatment is associated with recovery and whether infection is associated with elevated intestinal inflammatory markers (faecal calprotectin). Additionally, there is no consensus on the infective stage of the lifecycle. Competing theories propose that either Enterobius vermicularis ova act as a vector for the transmission of trophozoites or that the cyst stage, which is rarely fou

First molecular identification of the zoonotic parasite Anisakis pegreffii (Nematoda: Anisakidae) in Albania.

For the first time, Anisakidae larvae in commercially caught fish from the southwestern Ionian Sea off the Albanian coast were identified using molecular techniques. Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) from the Vlora district were examined for parasitic infections. Enzymatic digestion revealed the presence of Anisakis spp. larvae, which were subsequently analysed at ISS Rome by multiplex PCR and PCR-RFLP. Molecular results confirmed the larvae as Anisakis pegreffii. This study provides the first molecular confirmation of Anisakis species in Albanian waters. The detection of Anisakis

Epidemiology and management of nitroimidazole-refractory giardiasis.

BACKGROUND: Giardia is one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal protozoan pathogens globally. Nitroimidazole drugs are usually the first line of treatment, but nitroimidazole-refractory giardiasis (NRG), where infections fail to respond to these agents, is increasingly reported. At our centre, for laboratory-proven refractory giardiasis, a stepwise treatment ladder is used with albendazole plus tinidazole as second-line and mepacrine as third-line therapy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review between 2020 and 2024 at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London. Laboratory records ide
