Current Advances in Antioxidant Nanozymes for Liver Diseases.

The liver with unique physiological functions is susceptible to oxidative stress (OS) damage from reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, further triggering various liver diseases. Compared with conventional pharmacological and surgical therapies, natural antioxidant enzymes represent promise for liver disease therapy due to high ROS scavenging and low immunogenicity. However, their clinical translation is limited by instability and complex preparation. Antioxidant nanozymes not only mimic natural enzymes, but possess advantages including simple structure, low cost and high stability. They

Chemotherapy-induced secondary sclerosing cholangitis mimicking primary sclerosing cholangitis: a case report.

Secondary sclerosing cholangitis (SSC) is a rare condition that may mimic primary sclerosing cholangitis. Chemotherapy-related biliary injury is an emerging cause. We present a 72-year-old male with gastric carcinoma who developed cholestatic liver injury following oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. Imaging revealed intrahepatic biliary dilatation without an obstructing lesion. Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography confirmed biliary abnormalities. The patient was managed with biliary drainage and supportive care, resulting in gradual clinical and biochemical improvement. Chemotherapy-induced

Polystyrene nanoplastics induce multi-organ oxidative stress in mice: experimental evidence and a descriptive random forest-based analysis of study-design variables.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs), ubiquitous in natural environments, readily accumulate in organisms and pose emerging toxicological risks. This study pairs in vivo animal experiments assessing organ-specific oxidative stress responses induced by PS-NPs exposure with a descriptive random forest-based analysis of study-design variables reported in the published literature. Kunming mice were administered varying concentrations of PS-NPs with or without N-acetylcysteine (NAC) to assess oxidative stress across five organs (lung, liver, kidney, brain, and testicles). Dose-dependent increases in R

Hepatoprotective Effects of N-Acetylcysteine and Guarana in a Wistar Rat Model of Acute Acetaminophen Toxicity.

Acetaminophen overdose causes acute liver injury through oxidative stress, inflammation, and hepatocellular damage. This study evaluated the post-exposure effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), guarana, and their combination in a rat model of acute acetaminophen toxicity. Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly allocated to the Control, APAP, APAP + NAC, APAP + Guarana, and APAP + NAC + Guarana groups. Acetaminophen (3 g/kg) was administered orally on day 8. Treatments were initiated 4 h later and repeated on days 9 and 10; NAC was administered intraperitoneally at 1.5 g/kg, whereas guarana was admi

The ncRNA-Epigenetic-Cuproptosis Axis in Liver Diseases: From Copper Homeostasis to Precision Hepatology.

Cuproptosis, a recently defined copper-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by excess intracellular copper, is characterized by copper binding to lipoylated tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle proteins, causing aberrant protein oligomerization, iron-sulfur cluster loss, and proteotoxic stress. Given the liver's central role in copper homeostasis, hepatocytes are particularly vulnerable to this death modality. This review examines the emerging non-coding RNA (ncRNA)-epigenetic-cuproptosis axis in liver diseases, critically evaluating the evidence across a spectrum from well-established bioc

Hepatic Macrophage STING Signaling in Liver Fibrosis: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Perspectives.

Liver fibrosis (LF) arises from chronic liver injury, in which a persistently pro-inflammatory microenvironment shaped by hepatic macrophages drives hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) activation and fibrosis progression. The cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway serves as a molecular hub linking metabolic liver injury to immune and inflammatory responses, sensing danger signals from metabolic stress, mitochondrial injury, and cell death to initiate downstream inflammatory transcription. This signaling may sustain a pro-inflammatory macrophage phenotype and am

Single-Cell and Spatial Multi-Omics in Small-Intestinal Homeostasis and Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury: Current Advances, Applications, and Future Perspectives.

The intestinal tract acts as a dynamic barrier between the external and internal environments, and intestinal homeostasis fundamentally influences human health. This homeostasis depends on complex interactions among the epithelium, immune cells, and microbiota. Intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (II/R) disrupts these interactions and can cause local barrier failure and distant organ injury. However, the transition of the intestinal microenvironment from homeostasis to injury and repair remains incompletely characterized. This narrative review summarizes single-cell RNA sequencing, single-cell mul

Mucosal Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Gallbladder With Extraregional Lymph Node Metastasis: A Case Report.

Gallbladder small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNEC) is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy, and an optimal treatment strategy has not been established. We report a case of mucosal gallbladder SCNEC with extraregional lymph node metastasis that responded well to chemotherapy. A 69-year-old woman presented with severe epigastric pain and inflammatory findings. Ultrasonography, endoscopic ultrasonography, and computed tomography revealed a 40 mm gallbladder mass and enlarged lymph nodes in the hepatoduodenal ligament. Because inflammation and pain could not be controlled by conservative t

Gallbladder Cancer: Epidemiology and Prevention.

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is an uncommon but highly lethal malignancy, characterized by striking geographic clustering, late diagnosis, and a prevention profile that differs from other gastrointestinal malignancies. This narrative review synthesizes epidemiologic, mechanistic, clinical, and public-health evidence on GBC determinants with a prevention-oriented lens. Rather than merely cataloguing risk factors, we propose a pragmatic framework that combines epidemiologic credibility, population-attributable burden, baseline risk, biologic plausibility, feasibility, and the benefit-risk balance of

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage versus choledochoduodenostomy for distal malignant biliary obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD) has emerged as a potential alternative to endoscopic ultrasound-guided choledochoduodenostomy (EUS-CD) for distal malignant biliary obstruction (DMBO) after failed endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Comparative evidence remains scarce. METHODS: We performed a multicenter retrospective cohort study including consecutive patients who underwent EUS-GBD or EUS-CD using electrocautery-enhanced lumen-apposing metal stents after failed ERCP at four Spanish tertiary centers. The primary outcome was clinical su

Cancer in the Oldest-Old in Super-Aging Japan: Trends and Characteristics From National Registry Data.

Globally, Japan has the largest proportion of individuals aged ≥ 85 years. However, epidemiological studies on cancer in this age group are limited. This study aimed to investigate cancer trends and characteristics among the oldest-old adults (aged ≥ 85 years) in Japan, using population-based national and prefectural cancer registry data on incidence, mortality, trends, stage, and treatment patterns, and compared them with those of young-old adults (aged 65-84 years). From 1995 to 2020, the number of cancer cases among the oldest-old increased more than four-fold, with a significant average an

Intercostal Transdiaphragmatic Port Insertion During Laparoscopic Resection of Liver Tumors Below the Right Diaphragmatic Dome Based on Costal and Pulmonary Anatomy: A Systematic Review.

Several reports advocate placement of ports between ribs for performing laparoscopic liver resection involving segments 7 and 8, but adoption of this method still is debated. Further, precise positioning of these intercostal transdiaphragmatic ports (ICPs) is required to avoid complications. We undertook a literature search to compare outcomes of laparoscopic resection between use and nonuse of ICPs. We further included review of pertinent anatomic features aiming to guide safe introduction of ICPs. Among 380 articles screened, 6 compared aspects of outcomes with respect to ICPs. ICPs reduced

Depolymerized Fucoidan Alleviates High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesity in Association with Alterations in Gut Microbiota and Metabolic Profiles.

Obesity is a major global health concern associated with various metabolic disorders. Fucoidan, a seaweed-derived sulfated polysaccharide, has shown potential in alleviating obesity through modulation of gut microbiota. However, comparative effects of native and depolymerized fucoidan (Dfuc) on HFD-induced obesity and gut microbiota dysbiosis remain unclear. In this study, we compared the anti-obesity effects of fucoidan and Dfuc and evaluated their regulatory effects on gut microbiota and microbial metabolites in HFD-fed mice. Results showed that fucoidan and Dfuc reduced body weight gain, fa
