UNLABELLED: Algoneurodystrophy (AND) is a complex disorder with a wide spectrum of clinical presentations. Patients referred for a work-up of unilateral upper extremity AND were reviewed, and 50 patients were enrolled with sufficient documentation on history, causal event, clinical stage, and final outcome. There were 27 females, 23 males, mean age 44 years. The affected area was: shoulder 5, arm 3, elbow 3, wrist 26 and hand 13. Main precipitating events were fracture, contusion, or prior surgery. Two hundred and seventeen patients who had sustained an injury during the recreational use of a trampoline were managed in the emergency room of Logan Regional Hospital in Logan, Utah, from January 1991 through December 1992. Blunt trauma to the axillary artery is infrequently associated to unstable proximal humeral fractures or anterior dislocation of the shoulder. We report 3 patients who developed this complication. One of them had associated neurologic injury. All patients required a saphenous vein interposition graft and the patient with neurologic injury required surgical decompression of the brachial plexus. The results of arterial repair were excellent. An analysis of 135 consecutive shoulder injuries seen in one clinic during a single ski season revealed anterior dislocation to be the most common ailment, constituting 52% of the total. Rotator cuff tears accounted for 20% of the total, followed by acromioclavicular (AC) separations (18%) and a miscellaneous group of contusions and isolated fractures comprising the other 10%. To investigate high school football injuries, we analyzed 1,877 injuries (661 game, 1,216 practice) treated from 1976 through 1979 at the Sports Medicine Clinic at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. The common injury types were sprain (32.2%), contusion (24.8%), strain (12.4%), fracture (11.0%), tear (3.8%), dislocation (2.1%), myositis ossificans (1.4%), tendinitis (1.3%), and concussion (1.0%). Position of the player injured was quarterback (8.7%), running back (19.6%), receiver (12.4%), offensive lineman (23.7%), defensive lineman (10.2%), defensive back (9.2%), and linebacker (9.0%).
