Proteomic alterations in the plasma of Beagle dogs induced by Toxocara canis infection.

Toxocara canis causes ocular larva migrans and visceral larva migrans in humans. Knowledge about the molecular mechanism of T. canis-hosts interaction is limited. The proteomic alterations in the plasma of Beagle dogs induced by T. canis infection were studied by the quantitative mass spectrometry-based data-independent acquisition (DIA). 418, 414 and 411 plasma proteins were identified at 24 h post-infection (hpi), 96 hpi and 36 days post-infection (dpi), including 6, 5 and 23 proteins with differential abundance, respectively. At 24 hpi, the altered proteins, retinoic acid receptor responder

Prevalence of Toxocara eggs in the soil of public parks of Khorramshahr city, southwest Iran.

Human toxocarosis is a chronic zoonotic disease, which creates various syndromes in humans such as visceral larva migrans, ocular larva migrans, and neurological toxocarosis. This disease is commonly contracted through ingestion of eggs from the Toxocara species. The eggs are transmitted to humans through contact with soil that contaminated with feces of infected animals by Toxocara species worm. This study, investigated the soil from various parks and public areas of Khorramshahr city southwest of Iran for Toxocara egg contamination. One-hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from 21 p

A survey on the prevalence of Toxocara cati, Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina eggs in stray dogs and cats' faeces in Northwest of Iran: a potential risk for human health.

Toxocara cati and Toxocara canis target mainly cats and dogs respectively. However, Toxoascaris leonine can infect both cats and dogs. T. cati and T. canis are zoonotic parasites which can lead to visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans in humans. 200 faecal specimens of animals (100 stray cats and 100 stray dogs) were examined in this study from which 155 (77.5%) were reported to be infected by these parasites. Fifty cats from Azarshahr, fifty cats from Marand, and one hundred dogs from Tabriz were examined in the present study of which 45 (90%), 43 (86%), and 67 (67%), respectively,

Human Toxocara Infection: Allergy and Immune Responses.

BACKGROUND: Toxocariasis is a cosmopolitan infection that occurs in various regions worldwide, more frequently in developing countries. Chronic infections with Toxocara species in humans are associated with the production of high levels of specific and non-specific antibodies of all isotypes and IgG subclasses and a cytokine response characterized by the production of Th2 cytokines including IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 by Peripheral Blood Monocytes (PBMCs) and Leukocytes (PBLs) in whole blood cultures. Other Th2 effector responses are also prominent during infection, reflected by elevated numbers of

Visceral larva migrans detection using PCR-RFLP in BALB/c mice infected with Toxocara canis.

Toxocara canis is an important zoonotic roundworm distributed worldwide. The infective larvae of T. canis are one of the causes of visceral larva migrans (VLM), a clinical syndrome in humans. Diagnosing VLM is difficult, and the differential diagnosis of the larval development stage is limited. Therefore, this experimental research aimed to diagnose T. canis larvae using a molecular method, not only in liver tissue, which is the most commonly affected tissue, but also in the limb muscles, lungs and brain tissues. For this purpose, 24 BALB/c mice were infected with 1000 embryonated T. canis egg

Frequency of Toxocara canis antibodies in Mexican paediatric patients with epilepsy.

The relationship between epilepsy and the presence of visceral larva migrans caused by Toxocara canis in Mexican children remains uncertain; however, this relationship needs to be elucidated because these parasite larvae can invade the human central nervous system. Accordingly, this study aimed to determine the frequency and specificity of anti-T. canis antibodies in the sera of children with epilepsy to determine the relationship between this parasite and epilepsy. The sera samples of 214 children were examined: 111 children diagnosed with epilepsy and 103 clinically healthy children without

Saccharomyces boulardii reduces the mean intensity of infection in mice caused by the consumption of liver contaminated by Toxocara canis.

Probiotics have shown promising results as a potential method to control toxocariasis in mice inoculated with embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of Saccharomyces boulardii in mice fed in natura chicken livers infected with T. canis. Twenty 15-day-old male Sussex chickens were inoculated with 300 T. canis embryonated eggs via intragastric catheter (GI). After 72 h of infection, each liver was collected and individually offered to a group of 20 mice. Mice that received supplemented ration with S. boulardii (1.107 colony forming units) and consu

Robust Phenotypic Activation of Eosinophils during Experimental Toxocara canis Infection.

Eosinophils are multifunctional cells that have cytotoxic proinflammatory activities and stimulate CD4+ T-cells in experimental models of allergy and parasitic infections. Eosinophils, when exposed to antigens, are activated, expressing the CD38/CD69 molecules and exhibited increased expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC-II), CD80 and CD86, suggesting they play a role upon Toxocara canis antigen stimulation. In the present study, we evaluated the profile of eosinophils using conventional and image flow cytometry upon experimental T. canis infection. T. canis antigens induced a ro

Toxocara canis Mimicking a Metastatic Omental Mass from Sigmoid Colon Cancer: A Case Report.

Toxocara canis is an important roundworm of canids and a fearsome animal parasite of humans. Human infections can lead to syndromes called visceral larva migrans (VLM), ocular larva migrans, neurotoxocariasis, and covert toxocariasis. VLM is most commonly diagnosed in children younger than 8 years of age, but adult cases are relatively frequent among those infected by ingesting the raw tissue of paratenic hosts in East Asia. This research reports the case of a 59-year-old man with sigmoid colon cancer, who visited our institution for surgery. An intraperitoneal mass was found on preoperative c

Space Occupying Lesion in the Liver Caused by Hepatic Visceral Larva Migrans: A Case Report.

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) is one of the clinical syndromes of human toxocariasis. We report a case of hepatic VLM presenting preprandial malaise and epigastric discomfort in a 58-year-old woman drinking raw roe deer blood. The imaging studies of the abdomen showed a 74-mm hepatic mass featuring hepatic VLM. Anti-Toxocara canis immunoglobulin G (IgG) was observed in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot. Despite anthelmintic treatment, the patient complained of newly developed cough and skin rash with severe eosinophilia. Hepatic lesion increased in size. The patient und

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients with toxocariasis encountered at a tertiary care centre in North India.

Toxocariasis is a neglected soil-transmitted helminthic infection caused by either Toxocara canis or Toxocara cati where humans get infected by accidental ingestion of embryonated eggs, and the definitive hosts are dogs and cats. This study aims to analyse the clinical and laboratory characteristics of Toxocara-infected patients and assessment of response to standard treatment with review of literature. The clinical details of patients with Toxocara serology positive for IgG antibodies by ELISA in 5 years (2013-2017) were retrospectively analysed. A total of 29 patients with clinical features

[Visceral larva migrans syndrome and hepatic abscess: A case report].

Toxocariasis canis or catis is a zoonotic infection disseminated in humans. Human beings can act as non-natural hosts in which the parasite can survive for long periods of time and they become infected by the ingestion of geohelminth eggs. These can be located on the ground, playgrounds and children's games, and are mostly eliminated by dogs or cats. There are different spectra in the clinical presentation of this infection, which can vary from an asymptomatic host to the production of serious organic lesions; some of them are ocular toxocariasis, visceral larva migrans, covert toxocariasis an

Helminth Infections and Cardiovascular Diseases: Toxocara Species is Contributing to the Disease.

Toxocariasis is the clinical term used to describe human infection with either the dog ascarid Toxocara canis or the feline ascarid Toxocara cati. As with other helminths zoonoses, the infective larvae of these Toxocara species cannot mature into adults in the human host. Instead, the worms wander through organs and tissues, mainly the liver, lungs, myocardium, kidney and central nervous system, in a vain attempt to find that, which they need to mature into adults. The migration of these immature nematode larvae causes local and systemic inflammation, resulting in the "larva migrans" syndrome.

Abdominal Mass Secondary to Human Toxocariasis.

Toxocariasis is an extensive helminthic infection that leads to visceral larva migrans in humans. A 2.5-year-old girl referred for abdominal mass. She had history of pharyngitis for two weeks. There were no other symptoms. Abdominal examination revealed an irregular solid mass in right lower quadrant (RLQ). Abdominal ultrasonography revealed an echohetrogenic large mass in RLQ, liver, and retroperitoneal area. Abdominal CT scan showed a huge mass. At laparotomy a large retroperitoneal mass that involved right liver lobe, bladder, ileocecal valve, small and large intestines was found. At histop

Prevalence of Toxocara antibodies among patients clinically suspected to have ocular toxocariasis: A retrospective descriptive study in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Human toxocariasis, caused by Toxocara canis, T. cati, and T. vitulorum of dogs, cats and ruminants respectively, is recognized as an important zoonotic infection worldwide. The typical clinical syndromes of toxocariasis in humans are ocular larva migrans (OLM) and visceral larva migrans (VLM). The most commonly affected sites of OLM are the peripheral retina and/or vitreous humor. In Sri Lanka, there is a dearth of information on prevalence of ocular infection in our population. Therefore, the present study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Toxocara antibodies in susp

Survey of the prevalence of Toxocara cati in stray cats in Isfahan city, Iran by PCR method.

Toxocariasis is a parasitic zoonosis with worldwide distribution that affects both cats and dogs. This parasite is one of the factors contributing to visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans in humans. Therefore, it is crucial to gain a good understanding of how cats are infected by T. cati, so as to prevent citizens from infection. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of T. cati in Isfahan. In 2014-2015, a total of 147 feacal samples were collected from urban stray cats. The felid feaces were analyzed through PCR test and 26 cats (17.7%) were diagnosed with T. cati gene. Sixteen
