Eosinophilic pneumonia due to toxocariasis: an adult case report.

Toxocara is a roundworm, a common parasite of dogs (T. canis) and cats (T. cati). Toxocariasis or Visceral larva migrans (VLM) are diseases caused by the larvae of Toxocara sp., which may involve many organs, but pulmonary symptoms such as coughing and wheezing and allergic symptoms are seen in more than 80% of patients. It is known that, although the risk of infection is present, the worldwide diagnosis of toxocariasis is difficult since clinical and laboratory data provide insufficient evidence for the diagnosis. Nowadays, the diagnosis of toxocariasis is performed by serologic methods. We d

Epidemiological situation of toxocariasis in Iran: meta-analysis and systematic review.

Toxocariasis is the clinical terms applied to infection of human with ascarid nematodes in the order Ascaridida, named toxocara canis and toxocara cati. It is transmitted from dog and cat to humans. Accidental ingestion of parasite eggs causes ocular and visceral larva migrans in human. The aim of this study is to study epidemiology of toxocariasis in Iran using meta-analysis and systematic review. Using main key words of toxocariasis including epidemiology, Toxocara spp. Iran, dog and cat in databases such as SID, Google scholar, Pubmed, Magiran and Iranmedex, a number of 50 articles was extr

[Bell's palsy and facial pain associated with toxocara infection].

OBJECTIVES: Toxocarosis involving cranial nerves is extremely rare and almost exclusively concerns the optic nerve. Toxocarosis involving the seventh cranial nerve has not been reported. CASE REPORT: A 33y male developed left-sided Bell's palsy two days after left-sided otalgia 6y before. Despite extensive diagnostic work-up at that time the cause of Bell's palsy remained unknown. During the following years Bell's palsy slightly improved but retromandibular pain remained almost unchanged and he developed enlarged lymph nodes along the jugular veins, submandibularly, and in the trigonum caroti

Nasopharyngeal carrier rate of Streptococcus pneumoniae in children: serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance.

Explainable artificial intelligence approaches accelerate drug discovery by improving molecular representation learning, identifying key molecular structures, and rationalizing drug property prediction. However, developing end-to-end explainable models for structure-activity relationship modeling in target-specific compound property prediction remains challenging due to the limited availability of compound-protein interaction data for individual targets and the fact that small changes in chemical substituents or local structural motifs can lead to large differences in molecular properties. Laboratory diagnosis of human toxocariasis.

Toxocariasis is a helminth zoonosis caused by infection with the larvae of Toxocara spp. ascarid worms. Only two species, Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati, are recognised as causative agents of human disease. The best choice for serodiagnosis of the generalised forms of toxocariasis, visceral larva migrans (VLM) or covert toxocariasis, relies upon the initial use of TES-ELISA, after which any positive result should subsequently be tested by Western blotting (WB). Covert toxocariasis is mostly a benign infection, so a large majority of infected subjects are asymptomatic or have very few symptom

[Toxocariasis].

The clinical presentation of toxocariasis, a zoonotic parasitosis transmitted from dogs and cats to humans, can be very diverse, which is one of the reasons why Toxocara-related disease may go unnoticed. This paper gives a brief summary of the various clinical presentations (covert/common toxocariasis, visceral larva migrans, ocular toxocariasis and neurotoxocariasis), diagnostic and differential-diagnostic considerations as well as treatment and prevention. In brief, the diagnosis of human toxocariasis relies mainly on patient data, anamnestic information, symptoms, eosinophil count and total

Toxocara and Ascaris seropositivity among patients suspected of visceral and ocular larva migrans in the Netherlands: trends from 1998 to 2009.

Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati and Ascaris suum are roundworms of dogs, cats and pigs, respectively, that can also infect humans. These zoonotic helminths have a worldwide distribution and are also endemic in the Netherlands. Infection with Toxocara sp. may result in visceral larva migrans (VLM) or ocular larva migrans (OLM) caused by the migrating larvae. Although A. suum has been reported to occasionally mature to the adult stage in humans, clinical cases of VLM suspected to be caused by A. suum have been described. Diagnosis of these helminth infections relies mainly on serology. Here we ana

Clinical features of clinically diagnosed eosinophilic liver abscesses.

PURPOSE: Eosinophilic liver abscesses (ELAs) are frequently encountered in the clinical field based on typical computed tomography (CT) findings and the presence of peripheral eosinophilia. In this study, the authors evaluated the clinical features and natural course of CT diagnosed ELAs. METHODS: The medical records of patients that underwent abdominal CT from July 2004 to February 2008 at Seoul National University Hospital were retrospectively evaluated. ELA was clinically diagnosed by the presence of peripheral eosinophilia (≥500 μL(-1)) and typical CT findings. The presumptive causes of c

Marked hypereosinophilia in a toddler: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Human toxocariasis is primarily a soil-transmitted zoonosis, so children with geophagia are at an increased risk of toxocariasis, especially those living in homes with puppies that have not been dewormed. CASE REPORT: A 17-months-old female presented to our department with fever, abdominal distention and marked eosinophilia. Iron deficiency anemia, marked leukocytosis (79,000 cells/mm(3)) accompanied by marked eosinophilia (55,000 cells/mm(3)), and hyper-gammaglobulinemia were noted. On the basis of the strong serological positivity for toxocariasis, marked eosinophilia, and low-d

[Soil contamination by eggs of soil-transmitted helminths with zoonotic potential in the town of Fernandópolis, State of São Paulo, Brazil, between 2007 and 2008].

INTRODUCTION: The concentration of dogs and cats in urban areas, associated with an ever-increasing wandering population of these animals, has an important epidemiological role in the soil contamination of public spaces and the spread of infections of several types of parasites. This study aimed to determine the frequency of soil-transmitted helminths with zoonotic potential in public squares and municipal primary schools in Fernandópolis, State of São Paulo, Brazil, conducted between 2007 and 2008. METHODS: All the squares (32) and schools (13) in the town were evaluated. Soil samples were t

Visceral larva migrans in immigrants from latin america.

To determine whether increased migration is associated with an increase in incidence of toxocariasis (visceral larva migrans), we analyzed clinical data obtained from immigrants from Latin America. Although infection with Toxocara sp. roundworm larvae is distributed worldwide, seroprevalence is highest in tropical and subtropical areas.

A Case of Hypereosinophilia-Associated Multiple Mass Lesions of Liver Showing Non-Granulomatous Eosinophilic Hepatic Necrosis.

Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is defined by elevation more than 1.5×109/L of presence of a peripheral blood count, evidence of organ involvement, and exclusion of secondary eosinophilia such as allergic, vasculitis, drugs, or parasite infection and also clonal eosinophilia. We present the HES case with hepatic involvement. The patient is 70-year-old male. He complained fever and back pain. Blood examination showed marked peripheral eosinophilia, elevation of transaminase and biliary enzymes. Multiple irregular mass lesions of the liver were pointed out by CT and MRI. The liver biopsy was do

Eosinophilic pneumonia due to visceral larva migrans possibly caused by Ascaris suum: a case report and review of recent literatures.

We report the case of a 62-year-old man who developed eosinophilic pneumonia due to visceral larva migrans (VLM) that was possibly caused by Ascaris suum. The patient, a resident of the middle Kyushu area who was found of eating raw porcine liver, complained of dry cough without dyspnea. The chest radiography showed a migration of infiltrative shadow. Transbronchial lung biopsy of the right middle lobe revealed massive infiltration of eosinophils. The multi-dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and microtiter plate ELISA showed positive results for A. suum; therefore, the patient was d

Human toxocariasis: diagnosis, worldwide seroprevalences and clinical expression of the systemic and ocular forms.

Although human toxocariasis ranks among the most common zoonotic infections worldwide, it remains relatively unknown to the public. The causal agents are the nematode parasites Toxocara canis and T. cati, whose definitive hosts are dogs and cats, respectively. When embryonated eggs are accidentally ingested by humans, larvae hatch in the small intestine, penetrate the intestinal wall and migrate, via the bloodstream, to the liver, lungs, muscles, eye and central nervous system. Although most human infections are asymptomatic, two well-defined clinical syndromes are classically recognised: visc
