Fine needle aspiration diagnosis of necrotizing eosinophilic abscess clinically mimicking hepatic neoplasia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic hepatic pseudotumors (EHP) are known complications of visceral larva migrans (VLM). By radiologic studies, EHP can be suspicious for primary or metastatic hepatic neoplasia. Diagnosis of an EHP by fine needle aspiration (FNA) led to the diagnosis of Toxocara VLM in a patient with suspected hepatic neoplasia. CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old Cambodian man had hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis with grade III portal fibrosis diagnosed in 2003. He had had negative routine alpha-fetoprotein and radiologic screening for hepatic neoplasia until 2006 when abdominal computed tomogra

In vivo evaluation of albendazole microspheres for the treatment of Toxocara canis larva migrans.

Albendazole is a benzimidazole derivative with proven efficacy against many parasites such as intestinal helminths. Toxocariasis is one of the important parasitic diseases in humans and animals caused by Toxocara canis. It is well known that T. canis larvae migrate in paratenic hosts, including humans where it may cause visceral larva migrans. Thus, the present research was carried out using in vivo experiments with the aim of finding whether novel albendazole microparticles would be active against migrating larvae of the parasite. Albendazole-chitosan microparticles were prepared by ionotropi

Visceral larva migrans among children in Kütahya (Turkey) and an evaluation of playgrounds for T. canis eggs.

This research was undertaken to determine the seroprevalence of Toxocara canis (T. canis) in children aged 3-13 years in Kütahya, to determine the presence of infected larvae in playground sandboxes, and to obtain a view of the general situation regarding visceral larva migrans (VLM) in the city. The blood sera of 119 children (54 girls, 65 boys) were tested for T. canis IgG, and 9 (7.6%) were found positive. In sand samples collected from playgrounds in nine different residential areas across the city, only two of them, in Inköy and Zafertepe neighborhoods, had T. canis larvae; in total, 3 of

[Acute respiratory distress syndrome due to Toxocara cati infection].

Human toxocarosis is a helminthozoonosis due to the migration of toxocara species larvae throughout the human body. Lung manifestations vary and range from asymptomatic infection to severe disease. Dry cough and chest discomfort are the most common respiratory symptoms. Clinical manifestations include a transient form of Loeffler's syndrome or an eosinophilic pneumonia. We report a case of bilateral pneumonia in an 80 year old caucasian man who developed very rapidly an acute respiratory distress syndrome, with a PaO2/FiO2 ratio of 55, requiring mechanical ventilation and adrenergic support. Presence of Toxocara canis eggs on the hair of dogs: a risk factor for Visceral Larva Migrans.

The close contact between dogs and humans poses a high risk of exposure to Toxocara canis eggs, which can lead to Visceral Larva Migrans (VLM) syndrome. The objective of this study was to investigate the existence of these nematode eggs on the hair of the perianal region in stray and owned dogs. Samples of hair from 104 dogs of different ages were collected: 25 (24%) were positive for T. canis eggs, with mean of 614.8 eggs per gram of hair. Puppies were responsible for 99% of the total number of eggs. The ages of the animal and hair length were factors that influenced the intensity of the obse

[Epidemiology of parasitic diseases, hypereosinophilia, IgE from tropical and European parasitological origins].

Etiologic investigations of hypereosinophilia, often accompanied by IgE elevation, depends on the patient's geographic origin and travel history. In France, helminth diseases are the only parasitoses associated with hypereosinophilia. Some, such as oxyurosis in children, are frequent but generally mild. More severe but less frequent infections include distomatoses, trichinellosis, taeniasis, echinococcosis and visceral larva migrans. Among subjects originating from or having travelled to tropical areas with poor hygiene, eosinophilia may be due to early intense polyparasitism and has little et

[Diagnosis of human toxocarosis].

Human toxocarosis is an important parasitic zoonosis caused by larval stages of Toxocara species, the roundworms from dogs and cats. Larval migration through different soft tissues in the human generates several clinical entities in the patient, such as visceral larva migrans, ocular toxocarosis, and neurotoxocarosis. Definitive diagnosis by histopathological methods is very difficult or almost impossible and, nowadays, the diagnosis is usually made by clinical signs/symptoms, epidemiological background of the patient and the use of hematological and immunological tests which finally help to c

Seroprevalence of toxocariasis among Orang Asli (Indigenous people) in Malaysia using two immunoassays.

Toxocariasis is a zoonotic helminthic infection of humans caused by the dog roundworm (Toxocara canis) or cat roundworm (Toxocara cati). There are two main human syndromes: visceral larva migrans (VLM), which are characterized by symptoms associated with major organs and ocular larva migrans (OLM), in which pathological effects on the host are restricted to the eye and the optic nerve. The present study evaluated the seroprevalence of toxocariasis among the Orang Asli with an IgG4-ELISA using recombinant antigens (rTES-26, rTES-30 and rTES-120) and an IgG-ELISA commercial kit (Cypress Diagnost

Gnathostomiasis, another emerging imported disease.

Gnathostomiasis is a food-borne zoonosis caused by the late-third stage larvae of Gnathostoma spp. It is being seen with increasing frequency in countries where it is not endemic and should be regarded as another emerging imported disease. Previously, its foci of endemicity have been confined to Southeast Asia and Central and South America, but its geographical boundaries appear to be increasing, with recent reports of infection in tourists returning from southern Africa. It has a complex life cycle involving at least two intermediate hosts, with humans being accidental hosts in which the larv

Prevalence of antibodies against Ascaris suum and its association with allergic manifestations in 4-year-old children in The Netherlands: the PIAMA birth cohort study.

The association between helminth infections and childhood atopic diseases remains controversial. The majority of studies have been carried out in tropical areas, whereas less information is available from western countries with low intensity of helminth infections. In the Netherlands, the infection of pigs with Ascaris suum is very common, particularly on pig farms with outdoor facilities. This helminth can also infect humans, causing visceral larva migrans. This study aims at determining the prevalence of antibodies against A. suum and its association with allergic symptoms and sensitisation

The co-occurrence of Toxocara ocular and visceral larva migrans syndrome: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular toxocarosis associated with high peripheral eosinophilia and together with systemic signs of visceral damage has been reported sporadically. Eye infections caused by numerous migrating larvae of Toxocara parasites, probably due to re-invasion or delayed reactivation, and leading to a progressive loss of vision is relatively rare. We report three atypical cases of toxocarosis with the co-existence of ocular larva migrans syndrome and generalized signs of Toxocara infection in schoolboys. CASE PRESENTATION: Two children aged 8 and 14 years respectively, with symptomatic ocu

Evaluation of a molecular beacon real-time PCR assay for detection of Baylisascaris procyonis in different soil types and water samples.

Baylisascaris procyonis is a helminth parasite commonly found in North American raccoons (Procyon lotor) that is a cause of clinical neural, ocular, and visceral larva migrans in humans when infective eggs are ingested. Rapid detection of B. procyonis eggs in contaminated soil and water would assist public health analysts in evaluating risks associated with public exposure to areas of known raccoon activity. In this study, a molecular beacon probe-based real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed to enable rapid and specific detection of eggs of Baylisascaris spp. The molecul

Toxocariasis of the liver: visceral larva migrans.

Toxocariasis is caused by dog ascarid, Toxocara canis, forming eosinophilic inflammation such as eosinophilic abscess or granuloma in the liver and lungs. The lesions move slowly and thus the disease is called as visceral larva migrans. On CT or MR imaging, hepatic lesions are seen as multiple, ill-defined, oval lesions that measure 1.0-1.5 cm in diameter. Sometimes, the lesion may be angular or trapezoid. The lesions are usually best seen on the portal venous phase in dynamic contrast-enhanced CT and MR imaging; the lesions are either not seen or only faintly seen on arterial and equilibrium

Larval migration of Toxocara canis in piglets and transfer of larvae from infected porcine tissue to mice.

Visceral larva migrans (VLM), caused by Toxocara canis larvae in humans, animals and birds, is now well documented throughout the world. Seven piglets were infected orally with 5 x 104 embryonated eggs and the migration and distribution of T. canis larvae in the tissues were evaluated. After artificial gastric juice digestion, larval yields at necropsy from different organs and muscles on days 1, 3, 7, 15 and 30 post-infection (DPI) revealed 3.05, 0.97, 0.21, 0.13, 0.05, 0.14% recovery from liver, lungs, heart, kidneys, skeletal muscles and brain tissues respectively, with a total of 2486 (4.9

An improved method to obtain antigen-excreting Toxocara canis larvae.

Toxocara canis is a dog helminth which causes visceral larva migrans (VLM) when infecting humans as a larva. The infection is demonstrated by detecting IgG antibodies against excretory-secretory larval antigens (ESLA) in serum by ELISA. The production of ESLA involves the collection of adult worms from dog puppy stools, the separation of eggs from dissected uteri, and the in vitro growing of egg-derived larvae, following the time-consuming and laborious protocol described by De Savigny [De Savigny, D.H., 1975. In vitro maintenance of T. canis larvae and a simple method for the production of To
