Postembedding immunogold and immunoperoxidase staining methods revealed that substances occupying the lumen of the esophagus and the midgut were antigenic for both Wistar rats and humans. Specificity of the alimentary tract-associated antigen was assessed by reacting these substances with a panel of serum pools from patients with non-Trichinella helminth infections, including anisakiasis, paragonimiasis, gnathostomiasis, fascioliasis, dirofilariasis, and trichuriasis. The substances had no, or negligible, cross-reactivity among the serum pools with the only exception of severe trichuriasis ser

Indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) was performed on sections of Gnathostoma spinigerum advanced third-stage larva with gnathostomiasis, angiostrongyliasis, trichinosis, strongyloidiasis and cysticercosis sera. Positive fluorescence was observed with the first three sera. Fluorescence was associated with the anterior part of the esophagus, surface of the cuticle and cytoplasmic granules of the intestine. Absorption of sera with gnathostome antigen did not elicit fluorescence. The results suggest that substances secreted from the esophagus and intestine constitute antigens in excretory-se

ELISA was developed for the detection of IgG antibody in sera obtained from patients in Japan and in a foreign country. Gnathostoma doloresi adult antigen was less specific than G. spinigerum advanced third-stage larval antigen but their sensitivity were similar. Cross reactivity was observed in Toxocara canis-, Anisakis-, Paragonimus westermani- and Fasciola-infected sera when G. doloresi adult worms but not G. spinigerum advanced third-stage larvae were used as antigens.

Since 1975, increasing numbers of patients with inflammatory, migrant, recidivant nodules were observed in the towns of Temazcal, state of Oaxaca, Tierra Blanca, Veracruz and others along the Papaloapan river. Larvae of Gnathostoma sp. have been obtained from some of them. The local species, although not completely identified, must be very close to G. spinigerum. Infection is related to ingestion of "ceviche", a very popular mexican delicacy made with raw Cyclid fishes of the Miguel Aleman dam. Ecological and social changes provoked by the construction of the dam and hypotheticaly related to t

Gnathostomiasis, usually caused by larvae of Gnathostoma spinigerum, is a significant cause of morbidity in the Far East. We report a case of gnathostomiasis involving a male Thai residing in Kuwait who presented with acute pain in the right iliac fossa. A resection of the terminal ileum and cecum was performed. Microscopic examination showed a parasite in an eosinophilic abscess. The nematode was identified as an immature male G. spinigerum based on size, morphology, and distribution of cuticular spines.

Methods for the detection of antigens, antibodies and immune complexes in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with neurological manifestations suggestive of cerebral gnathostomiasis were developed, in the hope that they may be useful in confirming the diagnosis of Gnathostoma spinigerum infection. Gnathostoma antigens were determined by a sandwich enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using antibodies from rabbits immunized with the excretory/secretory (ES) antigens obtained from the in vitro supernatant fluid in which the third-stage G. spinigerum larvae were maintained. With a biot

All the parasitic diseases which may affect the face and the mouth are reviewed. Protozoan and helminths infections are described as well as arthropod bites and envenomation by other animals. Protozoan infections of interest to the oral and maxillofacial specialist are leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, cutaneous amebiasis, and toxoplasmosis. Helminth infections are due to nematodes, trematodes, and cestodes. Nematoda (true roundworm) infections include ankylostomiasis, strongyloidiasis, gnathostomiasis, gongylonemiasis, trichinosis, dracunculosis, loaiasis, filariasis, dirofilariasis, and onchoc

The case of a patient with thoracic abdominal and left arm, migratory erythema-edematous plates over a space of three years is described. The histopathologic features reveal a eosinophilic panniculitis due to probable larva migrans (gnathostomiasis). This appears to be the first report on the subject because we have not found any reference to the subject in Argentina bibliographic search.

The present situation of parasitic zoonoses in Japan is reviewed. A total of 51 species, i.e., 6 species of protozoan parasites, 14 species of trematode parasites, 11 species of cestode parasites, 18 species of nematode parasites and 2 species of acanthocephalan parasites are potential zoonotic parasites. Most (11 species) of the zoonotic nematodes provoke larva migrans. Habitats of zoonotic parasites vary greatly depending upon individual species. Some parasites cause heterotopic parasitism (e.g., Paragonimus westermani) and metastasis (Entamoeba histolytica). In larva migrans, parasites migr

The authors report a case of cutaneous Larva migrans attributed to a gnathostomiasis in a Laotian man living in France since 3 years. The diagnosis was suggested on the basis of epidemiological and clinical context (he often ate raw fresh fish in Thailand) and blood eosinophilia. It was confirmed by ELISA method which showed a very high antibody titer to Gnathostoma spinigerum. The patient was treated with cortisone and diethylcarbamazine and he has remained asymptomatic since.

During the 6 year period from January 1980 to December 1985 44 patients with infection of the central nervous system by Gnathostoma spinigerum or Angiostrongylus cantonensis were admitted to the Division of Neurology, Ramathibodi Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. In 16 patients the diagnosis could be confirmed serologically by means of ELISA techniques. In gnathostomiasis encephalitis, myelitis, radiculitis and subarachnoid haemorrhage formed the majority of clinical syndromes. Intracerebral haematoma and transitory obstructive hydrocephalus are described in this report as being caused by Gnathosto

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was evaluated for serodiagnosis of human ocular and visceral gnathostomiasis in comparison to an indirect haemagglutination (IHA) and precipitin (PPT) tests. The ELISA antibody titers were found to range from 1:400 to 1:51,200 against somatic and 1:200 to 1:25,600 against excretory-secretory (ES) antigens. When sera were tested at single dilutions, the ELISA was positive in 7 of 8 gnathostomiasis cases while only 5 and 3 were positive by IHA and PPT respectively. The overall specificity of the ELISA was 96.7% and 97.4% with somatic and ES antigens r

Sera from 4 patients with parasitologically confirmed gnathostomiasis and from 18 healthy individuals were studied by SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis using radioiodinated protein A to detect antibody responses against crude aqueous somatic extract of advanced third stage larvae of Gnathostoma spinigerum (L3G). It was found that the L3G extract was highly complex, comprising of more than 40 polypeptides among which more than 20 components were antigenic in human. The relative M.W. of the proteins ranged from 13 kd to 150 kd with the major antigenic bands at 150, 135, 120, 94, 84, 82, 72, 55,

Since the 1908s gnathostomiasis has occurred sporadically in Japanese who have eaten loaches, fresh-water fish imported from southeast Asia. Symptoms include creeping skin eruptions and eosinophilia. The symptoms disappeared in most patients within three months after the onset and the patients then remained symptom-free. To elucidate the causative factors, we fed one monkey with 80 gnathostome larvae collected from loaches and autopsied the animal 466 days later. Fifty-one viable larvae (64%) were recovered from muscle; these were in the advanced third stage and were encapsulated.

Two human cases of gnathostomiasis from ingestion of raw native Japanese loaches, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, are reported. Seven early third-stage larval Gnathostoma nipponicum were recovered from 3,098 loaches in the same district in which 2 human patients had obtained and eaten raw loaches. Encapsulated G. nipponicum larvae were also recovered from loaches infected under laboratory conditions. All 6 weasels captured in the same district in which the naturally infected loaches were found and where the humans had become infected were infected with adult worms of the same species. This is the
