The fibre type ratio and the cross sectional areas of fibres were studied in triceps brachial muscle after rupture of tendon of the biceps brachial muscle in man. On the healthy and injured sides of the m. triceps brachii, the mean value of type 1 fibres was 51.9% and 52.4%, respectively. The mean cross sectional area of fibre on the two sides of the triceps muscle varied considerably among individuals without any significant correlation to injury of the biceps tendon.

Eight cases of injury of the muscle triceps surae after a sclerosing injection in the territory of the external saphenous vein, are reported. In one case, it concerned an extremely severe evolution with necessary amputation of the leg; in the seven other cases, the consequences were less severe but the rate of partial permanent disability increased from 10 to 30 p. cent. Fifteen quadriplegic (tetraplegic) patients from the Spinal Injuries Unit of the Austin Hospital have had surgery to improve function in 17 of their upper limbs. Changes in strength, function, subjective ratings and the influence on 198 activities of daily living are reviewed. Thirteen patients with ruptures of the calcaneal tendon diagnosed more than four weeks after injury were reviewed. Eleven patients had operative reconstruction with tendon shortening and the postoperative follow-up ranged from one to seven years. Transfer of the posterior deltoid muscle to the triceps insertion for elbow extension provides improved function in patients with C5 and C6 level tetraplegia. Forty-four post traumatic paralyses of the brachial plexus were operated on to restore elbow flexion using tendon transfers. To evaluate the strain on a sutured Achilles tendon during walking in a short leg cast the EMG activity of the triceps surae muscles was studied. Many of the injuries suffered by today's athletes are sited in the Triceps Surae. The most common of these are the rupture of the Achilles Tendon and the disinsertion of the inferior Gemellus muscle. The clinical diagnosis is straightforward, based as it is on the sudden appearance of certain conditions: pain, disablement, haematoma, and sometimes laceration. A case of a 20 year old patient with an Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is described, in which a rupture of the Achilles tendon is repaired by a segmental tendon homograft. The function of the triceps surae returned to normal gradually and the plantar flexion was even weaker after 2 years. The technique and importance of the special radiography of the soft tissue is discussed with regard to the clinical diagnosis. Radiographs, histomorphologic and histologic results illustrate the course of the healing.

Two cases of unusual snapping at the elbow are described. In both, the medial head of the triceps was found to be separated from the main muscle belly. During flexion of the elbow, the medial head dislocated over the medial epicondyle, producing a characteristic snapping phenomenon. The authors have observed 103 cases of brachial plexus paralysis due to trauma. There were 65 total and 38 partial paralysis. The follow-up was for more than 5 years in half of the cases. By means of electromyographic evaluation we investigated the function of the rectus femoris, the vastus medialis, the tibialis anterior and the triceps muscle.
