Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), synthetic testosterone derivatives, are used to increase muscle mass and performance. However, high doses negatively affect tendons and ligaments, disrupting collagen balance and increasing injury risk due to a mismatch between muscle strength and tendon resilience. AAS use increases tendon rupture risk by weakening collagen structure and elasticity, despite muscle growth. Injuries often occur at major tendon sites and require imaging-based diagnosis, with surgery preferred in active individuals. Education and prevention are key due to AAS-related systemic r

BACKGROUND: Elbow extension is crucial for daily activities but is often neglected in the context of brachial plexus injuries. Triceps palsy in children with brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) can lead to significant functional impairments, including difficulty with overhead activities, stabilizing the arm, and performing tasks that require elbow extension.
METHODS: This cohort study included 12 children with BPBI who underwent lower trapezius to triceps transfer for elbow extension. Patients were followed for 6 months to 2 years postoperatively. Manual muscle testing using Lovett and Sunder

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) impacts the structure and function of the tendon and triceps surae. We aimed to describe recovery at different time points after injury using ultrasound imaging, strength testing and patient reported outcomes.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study design, collecting data from 15 different non-surgically managed participants at six independent rehabilitation time points (week 0, 8, 10, 16, 26, 52 post ATR). Outcomes included ultrasound tissue characterisation (UTC), isometric plantarflexor strength, Achilles tendon rupture score (ATRS), Euroqol 5-dimension, h

UNLABELLED: Injury to the triceps brachii tendon is relatively rare (<1 % of all tendon ruptures). Partial tears of triceps are seen in indirect injury mechanisms usually involving the superficial part of the muscle with intact deep medial head, which may require operative intervention in high-demand individuals.
CASE: A 36-year-old right-handed athlete with chronic complex triceps tear with a history of anabolic steroid use managed operatively with augmented primary repair using fibre-wire with excellent outcome at 2-year follow-up. We describe a novel technique of using a transosseous fibre

The Achilles tendon is composed of three distinct fascicle bundles, or "subtendons," each originating from the head of one of the three triceps surae muscles. In a healthy tendon, these subtendons slide relative to each other during muscle contractions. This subtendon sliding is reduced in older adults and younger adults who suffer an Achilles tendon injury. However, subtendon sliding is challenging to quantify in low-load scenarios that are critical for monitoring subtendon biomechanics in patients with mechanically compromised tendons, like following an Achilles tendon rupture and repair sur

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recovery of upper extremity function is considered the top priority in the tetraplegic population. Midcervical injury often results in paralysis of the hand and loss of elbow extension. Elbow extension is essential for extending one's workspace and facilitating mobility (ie, self-transfer, wheelchair propulsion). Tendon transfers have traditionally been used to restore elbow extension, but the axillary to radial nerve transfer (ARNT) has emerged as a promising alternative. Our objective was to review a case series of single-surgeon outcomes for recovery of elbow exte

BACKGROUND: In upper brachial plexus (C5-C6) avulsion injuries, deltoid reinnervation via radial-to-axillary nerve transfer is standard. However, fracture-dislocations around the shoulder complicate surgical exposure due to fibrosis and distorted anatomy.
METHODS: Fifteen male patients (mean age: 26.1 years) with C5-C6 avulsion injuries and concomitant shoulder fractures were treated between October 2019 and April 2022 using a modified posterior approach. The "teres major first" technique utilized the inferior border of the teres major muscle as a consistent landmark to identify and mobilize

INTRODUCTION: Injuries to the brachial triceps (BT) tendon are rare, accounting for about 1% of all tendon injuries. The complexity of these injuries, especially in their proximal portion, and the scarcity of data in the literature make each case essential to expand knowledge. This report demonstrates an effective treatment method for extensive muscle loss around the shoulder using a homologous graft, offering new perspectives for similar cases.
CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old female patient presented with a history of desmoid tumor treated surgically through an extensive surgical resection of the

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) involves abnormal bone formation in soft tissues near joints, commonly occurring after elbow trauma or surgery, leading to pain and functional limitations. Previous studies have primarily characterized HO distribution based on bony landmarks, lacking a detailed investigation into the characteristics of its distribution in periarticular soft tissue in post-traumatic elbows. This study aimed to (1) develop a muscle-guided classification system using computed tomography (CT) to map HO relative to elbow muscle-tendon units and (2) investigate correlations

Fall-related injuries are a large public health concern for older adults (OA). Delayed or inappropriate afferent signaling may hinder detection of balance perturbation (e.g., slip), predisposing OA to falls and less efficacious corrective actions. Perturbation detection is largely governed by proprioceptive acuity, consisting of sensory information from skin and musculotendinous receptors. While skin and muscle receptors' signaling thresholds increase with age, feedback from muscle may be uniquely delayed and diminished by age-related decreases in series elastic tissue stiffness which, during

BACKGROUND: Nerve transfers are routinely performed in patients with brachial plexus injuries because these patients have limited alternative solutions secondary to their severe injury with substantial functional limitations5,6. Nerve transfers offer distinct advantages over other surgical options, as they are able not only to bypass the zone of injury but also to decrease regeneration time because of the proximity of the motor end plate to the repair site1,2. It is for this latter reason that a nerve transfer should be considered for an isolated axillary nerve injury, in which a full recovery

An acellular dermal matrix is a biological graft composed of several components present in the dermis such as collagen fibers, elastin, fibronectin, and hyaluronic acid that serve as support for cellular repopulation that will gradually become vascularized. This provides mechanical resistance and improves suture retention. With this article we aim to present 2 cases, and our technique, in which a rupture of the distal triceps tendon occurred, patients presented late due to usual insurance authorization delays, and then required delayed surgical repair by means of dermal acellular matrix grafti

RATIONALE: Localized tetanus is a rare subtype characterized by muscle spasms in the vicinity of necrotic wounds and is often misdiagnosed due to overlapping symptoms. Tetanus has a high mortality rate and is tricky to diagnose and treat clinically. Our case report is about a 61-year-old male patient who was admitted to a local hospital with an open fracture of the right foot and underwent emergency debridement of the open fracture site, internal fixation, and closed negative pressure drainage of the wound, and developed a localized Mycobacterium tetani infection in the postoperative period. BACKGROUND: Transfer of intercostal nerves to the radial nerve branch innervating the long head of the triceps muscle for elbow extension is indicated in patients with traumatic brachial plexus palsy that is either the pan-plexus type or C5-C7 palsy with no triceps muscle function. The procedure aims to restore triceps muscle function through the use of the intercostal nerves, which are expendable nerves, as donors.
DESCRIPTION: The procedure is performed by first identifying the third to fifth intercostal nerves and coaptating them to the radial nerve branch innervating the long head of the

PURPOSE: Understanding muscle-tendon forces (e.g., triceps surae and Achilles tendon) during locomotion may aid in the assessment of human performance, injury risk, and rehabilitation progress. Shear wave tensiometry is a noninvasive technique for assessing in vivo tendon forces that has been recently adapted to a wearable technology. However, previous laboratory-based and outdoor tensiometry studies have not evaluated running. This study was undertaken to assess the capacity for shear wave tensiometry to produce valid measures of Achilles tendon loading during running at a range of speeds.

This study aimed to examine the temporal dynamics of muscle-tendon adaptation and whether differences between their sensitivity to mechano-metabolic stimuli would lead to non-uniform changes within the triceps surae (TS) muscle-tendon unit (MTU). Twelve young adults completed a 12-week training intervention of unilateral isometric cyclic plantarflexion contractions at 80% of maximal voluntary contraction until failure to induce a high TS activity and hence metabolic stress. Each participant trained one limb at a short (plantarflexed position, 115°: PF) and the other at a long (dorsiflexed posi

PURPOSE: Surgical reconstruction of elbow extension can help restore function in patients with tetraplegia and triceps paralysis because of spinal cord injury. Both posterior deltoid-to-triceps tendon transfer and transfer of the branch of the axillary nerve to the triceps motor branch of the radial nerve have been described for triceps reanimation. This systematic review aimed at reviewing current evidence in the two schools of surgery in terms of their outcome and complication profile.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using MEDLINE (1974-2023) and EMBASE (1946-2023) databases. The

Restoration of elbow flexion is a priority in treating adult traumatic brachial plexus injuries. A tendon transfer is an ideal option for patients not candidates for reconstructive nerve surgery or free-functioning muscle transfer. For patients with a partial brachial plexus injury or a pan plexus injury with adequate recovered triceps function and loss of elbow flexion, a triceps-to-biceps tendon transfer is a nonmicrosurgical option to restore elbow flexion. The technique of triceps-to-biceps transfer in which the complete triceps tendon is transferred laterally, secured lateral to the radia
