Acute shoulder tendon and intra-articular injuries are common and their imaging well described. However, a subset of patients present with more unusual acute shoulder muscle injury. Of these, pectoralis major muscle injuries are encountered the most often and are increasingly prevalent due to a focus on personal fitness, particularly bench-press exercises. Other muscle injuries around the shoulder are rare. This article reviews the anatomy, mechanism of injury, and the imaging findings in relation to injuries of these muscles around the shoulder. We focus on pectoralis major injury but also re

INTRODUCTION: Attaining active glenohumeral external rotation (aGHER), whether via primary reconstruction or spontaneous recovery, is infrequent in patients with neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPI). We evaluated the effectiveness of triceps-to-teres minor motor branch transfers to restore this function, both performed primarily (i.e., in conjunction with microsurgical plexus reconstruction) or secondarily (after primary surgery has failed to restore aGHER).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 12 children with NBPI undergoing triceps-to-teres minor motor branch transfer v

This study aimed to investigate an acute effect of foam rolling and tissue flossing of the Triceps Surae muscle on Achilles tendon stiffness, jump height and sprint performance at different time points. The participants were academic athletes (n = 32) aged between 22 and 24 years; randomly allocated into two groups: foam rolling (ROLL) and tissue flossing (FLOSS). The participants were tested at baseline and 5-min, 15-min, 30-min, 45-min, and 60-min after ROLL and FLOSS for Achilles tendon stiffness (ATstiffeness) at three reference locations: (1) tendon's origin, (2) ankle joint height and (3

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to outline an indirect sign of advanced Achilles tendinopathy on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), based on the hypothesis that these patients would present with secondary hypertrophy of the flexor hallucis longus muscle (FHL).
METHODS: MRI scans of Achilles tendon were analyzed retrospectively in two cohorts. The study group consisted of consecutive patients presenting with clinical signs of Achilles tendinopathy and no previous surgeries, while the control group were patients that had an MRI due to other reasons and no signs of tendinopathy. Two parame

BACKGROUND: The Achilles tendon (AT) develops from the merge of the tendinous part of the gastrocnemius (GM) and soleus (SM) muscles. The AT is the structural base for the biomechanical work of the ankle joint. Understanding morphometry of the AT is crucial due to the tendon vulnerability to rupture and damage which requires further surgical repair and management. Despite its clinical significance, data concerning measurements of the AT in human foetuses are scare. The aim of our study was to assess the AT, GM and SM morphometry in human foetuses.

PURPOSE: To assess whether the neuromuscular activation pattern following Achilles tendon rupture and repair may contributes to the observable functional deficits in this severe and increasingly frequent injury.
METHODS: In this study, the neuromuscular activation using surface EMG of n = 52 patients was assessed during a battery of functional performance tasks to assess potential alterations of muscular activation and recruitment. We analyzed the injured leg vs. the contralateral healthy leg at a mean of 3.5 years following open surgical repair. The testing battery included isokinetic streng

Differences in the adaptation processes between muscle and tendon in response to mechanical loading can lead to non-uniform mechanical properties within the muscle-tendon unit (MTU), potentially increasing injury risk. The current study analysed the mechanical properties of the triceps surae (TS) MTU in 10 young (YS; 22 ± 3 yrs) and 10 older (OS; age 65 ± 8 yrs; i.e. master) (inter)national level sprinters and 11 young recreationally active adults (YC; 23 ± 3 yrs) to detect possible non-uniformities in muscle and tendon adaptation due to habitual mechanical loading and ageing. Triceps surae mu

PURPOSE: The biarticular anatomy of the gastrocnemii is an important mechanism of knee-ankle coupling and differential elongation may affect this function leading to weakness of the push-off phase during the gait. Achilles tendon ruptures may cause detachment of the gastrocnemius tendon from the soleus aponeurosis with subsequent differential elongation of the individual subtendons. This study investigated the effects of such detachment by investigating tendon fusion levels of the two muscle groups, and the effect of sequential differential elongation of the gastrocnemius on the Achilles tendo

Inter-limb differences in Achilles tendon mechanical, material and morphological properties have previously been described in non-athletes and attributed to the preferential use of a given limb. Achilles tendon overuse tendon injury generally initiate unilaterally and alters triceps surae activation and Achilles tendon properties. The investigation of inter-limb differences in muscle activation and tendon properties may provide directions for injury prevention in habitual runners. In this study triceps surae and Achilles tendon properties were investigated bilaterally in habitual runners durin

BACKGROUND: Deficits in sporting performance after Achilles tendon repair may be due to changes in musculotendinous unit structure, including tendon elongation and muscle fascicle shortening.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to discern whether Achilles tendon rupture reduces triceps surae muscle force generation, alters functional ankle range of motion, or both during sports-related tasks. We hypothesized that individuals who have undergone Achilles tendon repair lack the functional ankle range of motion needed to complete sports-related tasks.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.

The rat is frequently used as a model to study the characteristics, aetiology and pathology of the Achilles tendon. However, though the structure of the human Achilles tendon has been extensively investigated, the anatomical structure of the rat Achilles tendon remains unclear, which impedes the ability to use rats to study Achilles tendinopathy. The purpose of this study was to reveal the structure of the rat Achilles tendon and to explore its similarities with the human Achilles tendon through an anatomical dissection of 80 rat Achilles tendons (40 female, 40 male). This study found that the

High-loading interventions aiming for muscle-tendon adaptations were so far implemented in on-site facilities. To make this evidence-based stimulus more accessible, we developed an easy-to-use sling-based training set-up for home-based Achilles tendon and triceps surae muscle strength training and assessed its reliability and effectiveness in healthy men. To assess reliability (n=11), intra-class correlation (ICC) and root mean square (RMS) differences of isometric maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of the plantar flexors were used. Effectiveness was tested in a controlled intervention trial

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) and muscle function in the triceps surae of runners with mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy (AT).
METHODS: Runners with (n = 11) and without (n = 13) AT were recruited. Plantar flexor isometric peak torque and rate of torque development (RTD) were measured using an isokinetic dynamometer. Triceps surae endurance was measured as single-leg heel raise (SLHR) to failure test. SICI was assessed using paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation during a sustained contraction at 10% of plantar flexor isomet

The triceps brachii muscle is the main extender of the elbow joint. Triceps tendon rupture or tearing presents a rare injury pattern in general. Distal tendon ruptures occur most commonly in the area of the insertion of the olecranon. Fractures of the radial head are reported as the most common concomitant injury. In many cases, pre-existing degenerative damage predisposes for tendon injury. These include local steroid injections, anabolic steroid abuse, renal insufficiency requiring dialysis, hyperparathyroidism, lupus erythematosus and Marfan's syndrome. However, the most frequent trauma mec

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess and compare elbow range of motion, triceps extension strength and functional results of type C (AO/OTA) distal humerus fractures treated with bilateral triceps tendon (BTT) approach and olecranon osteotomy (OO). At the same time, we are also trying to know whether BTT approach can provide sufficient vision for comminuted intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus, and whether it is convenient to convert to the treatment to total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) or OO.
METHODS: Patients treated with OO and BTT approaches for type C distal humerus f

PURPOSE: Triceps tendon injuries are rare and often caused by direct trauma to the arm. There are no clear guidelines on the management of these and typically partial tears are treated conservatively whilst full thickness tears are treated with primary surgical repair. We aim to review the literature on the methods for triceps repair and propose a novel surgical technique.
METHODS: A "Medline" and "Embase" literature search of titles and abstracts combining "triceps brachii muscle," "reconstruct/ed" or "reconstruction" alongside "reconstructive surgical procedures," and further cross referenc

PURPOSE: In cases of isolated paralysis of the axillary nerve, dissection of the distal stump at the posterior deltoid border can be difficult because of scarring from an injury or previous surgery. To overcome this, we propose dissecting the anterior division of the axillary nerve (ADAN) using a deltoid-splitting approach. We investigated the anatomy of the ADAN as it pertains to the transdeltoid approach and report the clinical application of this approach in 9 patients with isolated axillary nerve injury.
METHODS: The axillary nerve and its branches were dissected in 9 fresh cadaver specim

INTRODUCTION: Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) patients have persistent functional deficits in the triceps surae muscle-tendon unit (MTU). The complex remodeling of the MTU accompanying these deficits remains poorly understood. The purpose of the present study was to associate in vivo and in silico data to investigate the relations between changes in MTU properties and strength deficits in ATR patients.
METHODS: Eleven male subjects who had undergone surgical repair of complete unilateral ATR were examined 4.6 ± 2.0 (mean ± SD) yr after rupture. Gastrocnemius medialis (GM) tendon stiffness, morp
