BACKGROUND: Scapular winging is an uncommon but important cause of shoulder pain and disability. Surgical management can include soft tissue procedures such as split pectoralis major transfer, the Eden-Lange procedure, or a triple tendon transfer. When these procedures do not alleviate symptomatic winging or are inappropriate, scapulothoracic fusion is an alternative, but data on its longer-term effectiveness are sparse.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What changes in outcome scores were observed (VAS, Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation [SANE], and Simple Shoulder Test [SST] scores), and what propo

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) is one of the most commonly performed orthopaedic surgical procedures; however, patient-reported outcomes have varied greatly in the literature.
PURPOSE: To identify preoperative factors that affect outcomes and to develop prognostic tools for predicting functional outcomes in future ARCR cases.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: Patients were included who underwent ARCR for repairable full-thickness rotator cuff tears with at least 2 years of follow-up. Twelve predictors were entered as candidate predictors in each

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome of contralateral lower trapezius origin transfer (CLTOT) to restore shoulder external rotation in patients with shoulder paralysis after brachial plexus injury (BPI).
METHODS: We evaluated 12 patients with a history of BPI with persistent shoulder paralysis. All patients had compromised ipsilateral lower trapezius muscle function. All patients underwent CLTOT prolonged with lumbar fascia to the affected infraspinatus tendon either isolated (7 patients) or as part of multiple tendon transfer (5 patients). Standardized patient outcomes measures were obtained.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff repair is a successful treatment in terms of patient satisfaction and pain relief regardless of the repair method. Although arthroscopic repair is commonly thought to be less painful than open or miniopen repair, studies disagree on this point.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We wished to compare the results of patient-reported postoperative pain after open versus arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and to identify any predictors of various pain outcomes in these groups.
METHODS: One-hundred two patients (52 with open repair, 50 with arthroscopic repair) participated. Preoperativel

Multiple pectoralis major tendon tears have been reported in the literature; however, isolated rupture of the pectoralis minor tendon is rare and has been reported 3 times (4 patients). This article describes a case of an isolated pectoralis minor tendon tear in a male high school football player after a traumatic injury. The patient was injured while making a tackle and leading with his arm and chest. He presented with left anterior shoulder and chest wall pain with direct tenderness on palpation over the coracoid. Magnetic resonance imaging of the chest revealed an isolated tear of the pector

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of SLAP and biceps reflection pulley lesions. The hypothesis was that these lesions do not occur concomitantly and they have a different etiology.
METHODS: We prospectively analyzed 3,395 shoulder arthroscopies that were independently performed by 2 surgeons between 2004 and 2008 regarding the prevalence of SLAP and biceps pulley lesions. Intraoperative findings were correlated with patient history and clinical examination. Exclusion criteria were type I SLAP lesions, full-thickness rotator cuff tears, and a history of shoulder

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, multicenter research design.
OBJECTIVES: To assess functional and health status outcomes in patients following a physical therapy program after rotator cuff repair surgery, and to determine the impact of selected patient medical comorbidities on rehabilitation outcomes.
BACKGROUND: While authors have studied the influence of multiple factors on patient outcomes after rotator cuff repair surgery, little research has been done on the impact of comorbidities, particularly as it relates to establishing an accurate patient prognosis. eighteen patients who had recently u

BACKGROUND: Despite improvements in the clinical assessment of rotator cuff injuries, shortcomings exist in diagnosing rotator cuff tears.
PURPOSE: To formulate a clinical rotator cuff functional index for predicting rotator cuff tears based on handheld dynamometer measurements for shoulder strength testing and to assess its ability to diagnose a rotator cuff tear.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 2.
METHODS: Preoperative handheld dynamometer measurements, including supraspinatus, external rotation, internal rotation, adduction, and lift-off force, were compared in

The purposes of this study were to evaluate anatomically various surgical intervals to the posterior shoulder and to determine the effects of varying arm positions and anterior-inferior capsular shift (AICS) on the relation of the posterior neurovascular structures to fixed bony landmarks. Fourteen cadaveric shoulders were dissected. The posterior surgical anatomy was defined, and the distances from fixed bony landmarks to neurovascular and musculotendinous structures were determined with digital calipers. Measurements were made with the arm in various positions and repeated after AICS. The mo
