The hydatic disease is cosmopolitan and is due to the development of the larva of a small tapeworm called Echinococcus granulosus. Although rare, today, there are many cases of hydatic cyst of the heart. Echocardiography and other physical examinations reveal the fluid collection and also specify its exact location on the heart. The study reported data from 507 post-mortem records in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi, Kenya. The records were from carcasses obtained from the peri-urban area of Nairobi during a 20-year period between 1990 and 2009. The 28S rDNA from nine species of the genus Syphacia collected in Japan was sequenced, and the phylogenetic relationship was inferred from multiple sequence alignment of 28S rDNA by the MAFFT program. BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) of the liver is a rare and severe parasitic disease. It behaves like a slow-growing liver cancer, and liver transplantation (LT) has been proposed in advanced cases since 1985.
