Over several years, the authors have devised a technique for compound island transplants of ulnar origin, harvested from the forearm's lower third, with reverse flow vascularization. Because of the variety of arterial ramifications, these transplants can consist: either of a simple cutaneous, superficial flexor tendon or ulnar fragment transplant, or, when associated, of compound cutaneous-tendinous, cutaneous-osseous and even cutaneous-tendinous-osseous transplants. We report a rare solitary paralysis of the triceps muscle. The patient, an 18-year-old man who had had a work-related accident, sustained a severe contusion of the proximal posterolateral arm after being struck by a piece of lumber. This retrospective study analyses the results of 80 shaft fractures of the radius treated by open reduction and plating by a volar approach. Studies about strain distribution on the radius shaft worked out a varying pattern of tensile forces and a continuously change of the tension bend side through full range of motion. After dislocation of the elbow with avulsion of the medial epicondyle, the management of the latter is controversial. Of 28 children followed up after initial closed reduction of the elbow, 19 had a satisfactory closed reduction of the epicondyle and were treated in plaster. One hundred seventy patients with radial nerve disorders were reviewed at the Louisiana State University Medical Center over a 15-year period. Of these, 32 had involvement of the posterior interosseous nerve exclusively. As part of the injury profylaxes in Denmark a questionnaire investigation was undertaken in 14 randomly chosen ice hockey teams--out of 266 players, 210 answered (79%). The author presents his experience with an established technique of flexor tendon lengthening by tenotomy at the musculotendinous junction. A case-control study of 232 cases of cutaneous malignant melanoma and 232 matched controls was performed to assess the association of the disease with nonmelanotic skin tumors--basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and solar keratoses. Ten open radiocarpal fracture-dislocations in nine patients were treated by wound debridement, open reduction, and maintenance of reduction by casting supplemented with internal or external fixation. The Hackethal technique of using stacked medullary pins for fixation of humeral shaft fractures is usually associated with relatively little blood loss; in addition, exposure of the fracture site and possible associated muscular trauma are avoided, and the risk of contusion of the radial nerve that may occur in fixation by plate and screws is eliminated. To investigate high school football injuries, we analyzed 1,877 injuries (661 game, 1,216 practice) treated from 1976 through 1979 at the Sports Medicine Clinic at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. The common injury types were sprain (32.2%), contusion (24.8%), strain (12.4%), fracture (11.0%), tear (3.8%), dislocation (2.1%), myositis ossificans (1.4%), tendinitis (1.3%), and concussion (1.0%).
