Humeral shaft fracture is a common injury which can be treated either conservatively with functional bracing or with surgical fixation. Current evidence shows an increase in the rate of nonunion after conservative treatment, suggesting that indications for conservative treatment may need to be re-examined. This article updates trends in treatment for humeral shaft fracture. Indications for surgery, both for plate osteosynthesis with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) as well as for minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) and intramedullary nailing (IMN) are described. Recogniti

PURPOSE: The presence of soft tissue injury in pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHFs) has been shown to be an independent predictor of any neurovascular injury. Potentially expanding this concept, the specific neurovascular structure injured around the elbow is thought to be dependent upon the direction and magnitude of fracture displacement and subsequent soft tissue injury. Therefore, it was hypothesized that the bruise location following SCHF is indicative of the anatomic location of maximal soft tissue injury and therefore is a specific prognosticator of which neurovascular stru

INTRODUCTION: Radial nerve lesions present a clinical entity that may lead to disability, psychological distress, and job loss, and thus requires great attention. Knowledge of the etiology and exact mechanism of the nerve impairment is of great importance for appropriate management of these patients, and there are only a few papers that focused on these features in patients with surgically treated radial nerve lesions. The lack of studies presenting the etiology and injury mechanisms of surgically treated radial nerve lesions may be due to a relatively small number of specialized referral cent

BACKGROUND: Limitations to terminal elbow extension (TEE) in pediatric populations have been commonly associated with the degree of ligamentous laxity and not bony factors. Ligamentous laxity, quantified through the Beighton score, is criticized for unreliably assessing joint mobility. This study aims to show that the olecranon-coronoid notch angle (OCNA) affects TEE in healthy children and adolescents.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 711 pediatric patients treated for upper extremity and shoulder injuries was cross-sectionally studied at 2 tertiary centers from 2014 to 2021. Radiographs we

We report the case of an 89-year-old woman who was struck by a car while walking and fell to the ground. She had hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cerebral infarction requiring medication. She was transported to a nearby acute critical care center. Upon arrival, her vital signs were stable. A physical examination showed right facial and hip contusion, right shoulder tenderness, a right elbow contusional lacerated wound, and bilateral knee abrasion wounds. She vomited when her face moved. Radiological studies showed a right proximal humerus fracture and a right minor ischial fracture. Her injury

CASE: A 20-year-old male collegiate basketball player was evaluated for sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, and blurry vision, following an elbow to the anterior chest by another player. His symptoms improved over 10 minutes of observation, but rhythm strip performed onsite showed atrial fibrillation, and the athlete was transmitted to the emergency department for further evaluation. Electrocardiogram in the ER confirmed atrial fibrillation with a rate of 85 bpm. Electrocardioversion was being arranged when he spontaneously converted to normal sinus rhythm, 2.5 hours from the tr

To assess head impact incidents (HIIs) and to distinguish diagnosed head injuries from other incidents, a video observation analysis of match HIIs was conducted in the German Bundesliga (2017/18 season). Video recordings of each match were screened to identify the respective events. Head injury data were identified by a prospective injury registry. HII and head injury incidence rates (IR) were calculated with 95% CIs. The total number of HIIs was 1,362 corresponding to an IR of 134.9/1000 match hours (95% CI 127.9–142.2). In 123 HII (IR 12.2, 95% CI 10.2–14.5) the contact was classified as sev

INTRODUCTION: Ulnar nerve injury in closed both bone forearm fracture is rare. Most nerve injuries are neuropraxia and rarely the nerve is trapped or is transected. Most of the time recovery is spontaneous but sometimes requires surgical exploration. We are reporting a case of a 14-year-old boy with closed both bone forearm fracture with ulnar nerve palsy due to entrapment and laceration between ulnar bone fracture fragment.
CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old boy presented in emergency department elsewhere with a left forearm closed injury due to fall while playing where he was diagnosed with both bo

BACKGROUND: Traumatic distal triceps tendon rupture results in substantial disability in the absence of an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. To the best of our knowledge, differences in the degree of injury according to the injury mechanisms and associated lesions are not well known.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In this study, we asked: (1) What differences are seen in triceps tear patterns between indirect injuries (fall on an outstretched hand) and direct injuries? (2) What are the associated elbow and soft tissue injuries seen in indirect and direct triceps ruptures?
METHODS: Between 2006 and 2

METHODS: Fifty-four male athletes from two different teams were involved. Accidents and injuries were recorded immediately after the incident by a team physician present at every race. Exposure, location, type and cause of injury have been recorded. Incidence was calculated. Severity was measured as a cumulative severity score and burden depicted in a risk matrix.
RESULTS: Total time of exposure was 12537 hours over 3524 athlete days and 544002 kilometers of racing. 98 accidents were recorded, with 83 leading to injury. The total number of recorded injuries was 193. Injury incidence for all i

INTRODUCTION: Humeral fractures are the second common long bone fractures of the neonatal period after clavicle. Most cases of birth-related humerus fracture are reported during a vaginal breech delivery. The cesarean section does not eliminate the risk of long bone fractures. A humerus fracture is less common but still can happen due to forceful maneuvers like traction during cesarean which can go unnoticed to operating obstetrician or misinterpreted as brachial plexus injury by an inexperienced orthopedic surgeon.
CASE REPORT: We received a call from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between the degree of injury to the medial and lateral collateral ligaments (MCL and LCL) and associated fractures in patients with a posterolateral dislocation of the elbow, using CT and MRI.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 64 patients who presented between March 2009 and March 2018 with a posterolateral dislocation of the elbow and who underwent CT and MRI. CT revealed fractures of the radial head, coronoid process, and medial and lateral humeral epicondyles. MRI was used to identify contusion of the bone and collateral

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine injury mechanisms and soft tissue injury patterns of dislocation caused by posteromedial rotatory instability (PMRI) and simple posteromedial (PM) dislocation of the elbow joint that appear similar on simple radiographs.
METHODS: In this retrospective case-series study, we reviewed 13 patients with PMRI dislocation and 10 patients with simple PM dislocation. Three-dimensional computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were performed in both groups. The ulnar collateral ligament, lateral collateral ligament complex (LCLC), overlying extensor muscle, a

Most atypical fractures associated with the long-term treatment with bisphosphonates (BP) commonly develop in the femoral shaft or subtrochanteric region. We report a rare case of bilateral atypical ulnar fractures in an 86-year-old woman with osteoporosis who finished the treatment with teriparatide for 2 years after long-term treatment with BP. She slid down from an approximately 30-cm-tall seat and slightly contused her left elbow. Plain radiography revealed that both ulnae had a noncomminuted short oblique fracture with cortical thickening and sclerosis at the fracture site. Based on the c

BACKGROUND: The clinical relationship between osteochondral lesions and long-term outcomes and patterns in the elbow joint has not yet been established. A sole evaluation from plain standard radiography may underestimate the severity of bony lesions in patients with simple dislocations. It has been suggested that the mechanism of a posterior elbow dislocation could be inferred from the pattern of bony contusions and osteochondral lesions visible on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with simple elbow dislocations.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to describe the inc
