Molecular epidemiology of hepatitis B virus isolated from Bangladesh.

Here, we propose a new strategy for the treatment of early cancerous lesions and advanced metastatic disease, via the selective targeting of cancer stem cells (CSCs), a.k.a., tumor-initiating cells (TICs). We searched for a global phenotypic characteristic that was highly conserved among cancer stem cells, across multiple tumor types, to provide a mutation-independent approach to cancer therapy. This would allow us to target cancer stem cells, effectively treating cancer as a single disease of "stemness", independently of the tumor tissue type. Using this approach, we identified a conserved ph

Survey of Hand and Upper Extremity Injuries Among Rock Climbers.

BACKGROUND: Rock climbing first evolved as a sport in the late 18th century. With its growing popularity, the number of rock climbing-related injuries has potential to increase, spurring a rise in the number of articles associated with it. Despite the available literature, there remains a paucity of information about upper extremity injuries sustained by rock climbers, and no studies to date have focused on gender-specific injuries. METHODS: A 24-question online survey was distributed to rock climbers about upper extremity injuries sustained during rock climbing. Statistical analysis was used

High-energy injuries of the wrist.

High-energy injuries to the wrist gather complex fractures of the distal radius, radiocarpal dislocations, perilunate dislocations, and other intracarpal dislocations. Depending on the energy of the injury and the position of the wrist at the time of impact, the patient, often a young male with a high functional demand, presents one of these injuries associating fracture(s) and ligament injury. The trauma is often bilateral, with proximal lesions (elbow) very often associated with contusion or compression of the median nerve. Diagnosis is confirmed by wrist X-rays, which are sufficient to dete

Magnetic resonance imaging and short-term clinical results of severe frozen shoulder treated with manipulation under ultrasound-guided cervical nerve root block.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings and short-term clinical outcomes of severe idiopathic frozen shoulder treated with manipulation under ultrasound-guided cervical nerve root block (MUC). METHODS: The subjects were 30 patients (average age, 55.2 years; 12 men, 18 women) with severe frozen shoulder. Severe idiopathic frozen shoulder was defined as follows: a range of motion (ROM) of ≤ 100° in forward flexion, ≤ 10° in external rotation, and at or below the fifth lumbar vertebral level in internal rotation. Before the manipulation, all patients had continued g

The prevalence of injury in Kendo.

OBJECTIVE: Kendo is a Japanese martial art analogous to fencing, which is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. The large number of participants creates a need to assess injury patterns to better train them. The purpose of this study is to describe current injury rates in kendo and compare these rates to other martial arts. METHODS: This retrospective study used an online questionnaire sent to 500 active members of the All United States Kendo Federation and World Kendo Federation. The questionnaire, based on the NCAA Injury Surveillance System, contains questions regarding location and typ

Imaging Patterns in MRI in Recent Bone Injuries Following Negative or Inconclusive Plain Radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Few bony injuries and most soft tissue injuries cannot be detected on plain radiography. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect such occult bony injuries due to signal changes in bone marrow. In addition to excluding serious bony injuries, it can also identify tendon, ligament, cartilage and other soft tissue injuries and thus help in localizing the cause of morbidity. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the MRI imaging patterns in recent bone injuries (less than 4 weeks) following negative or inconclusive plain radiographs. To determine the role of MRI in recent fractures. RE

Common Shoulder Injuries in American Football Athletes.

American football is a collision sport played by athletes at high speeds. Despite the padding and conditioning in these athletes, the shoulder is a vulnerable joint, and injuries to the shoulder girdle are common at all levels of competitive football. Some of the most common injuries in these athletes include anterior and posterior glenohumeral instability, acromioclavicular pathology (including separation, osteolysis, and osteoarthritis), rotator cuff pathology (including contusions, partial thickness, and full thickness tears), and pectoralis major and minor tears. In this article, we will r

The outcomes of salvage surgery for vascular injury in the extremities: a special consideration for delayed revascularization.

A seven years retrospective study was performed in 45 consecutive vascular injuries in the extremities to investigate the pattern of injuries, managements and outcomes. Motor-vehicle accidents were the leading cause of injuries (80%), followed by industrial injuries (11.1%) and iatrogenic injuries (4.4%). Popliteal and brachial artery injuries were commonly involved (20%). Fifteen (33.3%) patients had fractures, dislocation or fracture dislocation around the knee joint and 6 (13.3%) patients had soft tissue injuries without fracture. Traumatic arterial transection accounted for 34 (75.6%) case

Myositis ossificans traumatica causing ankylosis of the elbow.

Myositis ossificans traumatica is an unusual complication following a muscle contusion injury. A significantly large myositic mass causing ankylosis of the elbow is even rarer. We report a 13-year-old boy who presented with a 14-month history of a fixed elbow with no movement and a palpable bony mass in the anterior aspect of the elbow. He had sustained significant trauma to the affected limb 1 month prior to onset of symptoms, which was managed by native massage and bandaging for 4 weeks. The clinicoradiological diagnosis was suggestive of myositis ossificans, and the myositic mass was comple

Therapeutic intraspinal microstimulation improves forelimb function after cervical contusion injury.

OBJECTIVE: Intraspinal microstimulation (ISMS) is a promising method for activating the spinal cord distal to an injury. The objectives of this study were to examine the ability of chronically implanted stimulating wires within the cervical spinal cord to (1) directly produce forelimb movements, and (2) assess whether ISMS stimulation could improve subsequent volitional control of paretic extremities following injury. APPROACH: We developed a technique for implanting intraspinal stimulating electrodes within the cervical spinal cord segments C6-T1 of Long-Evans rats. Beginning 4 weeks after a

The anatomical basis for anterior interosseous nerve palsy secondary to supracondylar humerus fractures in children.

INTRODUCTION: Various studies have found that 6.6 to 31% of supracondylar elbow fractures in children have nerve-related complications. One-third of these are cases of anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) palsy that usually result in a deficit of active thumb and index flexion. The goal of this cadaver study was to describe the course of the AIN to achieve a better understanding of how it may get injured. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On 35 cadaver specimens, the median nerve and its collateral branches destined to muscles were dissected at the elbow and forearm levels. The distance at which the variou

A simple technique for double plating of extraarticular distal humeral shaft fractures.

Plate fixation of extraarticular distal humeral shaft fracture is often difficult. Traditional techniques do not allow for stable fixation. A single DCP plate may have inadequate purchase in the distal fragment. The use of large plates extending distally over the lateral supracondylar ridge is often associated with pain and sometimes interferes with elbow range of motion. In this study, 22 patients with extra articular distal humeral fractures were managed with dual plating using a paratricipital approach. The first plate--a narrow DCP--was fixed on the dorsal surface of the humerus. The secon
