[Waveboard-related injuries. Greater protection is advised].

OBJECTIVE: Waveboarding, a type of skateboarding, is a new craze among children. The aim of this study is to describe how many children visit the emergency department as a consequence of waveboarding and the types of injury they have. DESIGN: Retrospective, descriptive. METHOD: All records of children aged 5 to 15 years who had visited the emergency department of the Medical Center Alkmaar in the period March to May 2010 were examined. If a case of waveboard-related injury was found then the type of injury was noted. For all of the injuries a phone call was made to try to find out if protect

Tumoral calcinosis: a case report.

An 11-year-old girl presented with a progressive swelling of the right elbow after a contusion. Radiography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a densely calcified lesion with no periosteal reaction or fracture. The underlying bone and muscles had normal signal intensity. A bone scan revealed increased uptake over the right elbow and the left buttock and acetabulum. Blood tests revealed no abnormality. As the mass progressively increased in size and malignancy could not be excluded, excision was performed 4 months after presentation. A lobulated, yellowish mass with a pseudo-capsule measurin

The use of acetic Acid iontophoresis in the management of a soft tissue injury.

BACKGROUND: Contusions are common injuries that occur in athletics. If repeated, complications like myositis ossificans can occur. This case describes the examination and treatment of an athlete with an acute soft tissue injury. OBJECTIVE: To describe the treatment approach used with a hockey player who sustained a soft tissue injury in his upper extremity. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 19 year old male sustained a soft tissue injury to his upper arm while playing hockey. The athlete complained of pain rated a 2-3 out of 10. He had a well circumscribed, firm, 8 by 5 centimeter palpable mass present al

Brachial plexus injury mimicking a spinal-cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: High-energy impact to the head, neck, and shoulder can result in cervical spine as well as brachial plexus injuries. Because cervical spine injuries are more common, this tends to be the initial focus for management. We present a case in which the initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was somewhat misleading and a detailed neurological exam lead to the correct diagnosis. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old man presented to the hospital following a shoulder injury during football practice. The patient immediately complained of significant pain in his neck, shoulder, and right ar

Assessment of injuries sustained in mixed martial arts competition.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions have gained much popularity, and the sport is watched by many millions annually. Despite ongoing controversy, there have been no objective studies of the injuries sustained in MMA based on on-site evaluation. In the study reported in this article, we attempted to delineate injury patterns for MMA participants. We conducted an observational cohort study of MMA competitions held in Hawaii between 1999 and 2006. The study included 116 bouts, involving 232 "exposures" and 179 male participants between ages 18 and 40. All the fighters were examined by 1 of 4 ph

Forelimb locomotor assessment scale (FLAS): novel assessment of forelimb dysfunction after cervical spinal cord injury.

We describe here a novel forelimb locomotor assessment scale (FLAS) that assesses forelimb use during locomotion in rats injured at the cervical level. A quantitative scale was developed that measures movements of shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints, forepaw position and digit placement, forelimb-hindlimb coordination, compensatory behaviors adopted while walking, and balance. Female Sprague-Dawley rats received graded cervical contusions ranging from 200 to 230 ("mild," n=11) and 250-290 kdyn ("moderate," n=13) between C5 and C8. Rats were videotaped post-injury as they walked along an alley to

Maxillofacial injuries sustained during soccer: incidence, severity and risk factors.

A very popular sport worldwide, soccer generates a great number of maxillofacial injuries, mainly fractures, resulting in esthetic or functional problems. The aim of this retrospective study was to contribute to the knowledge of soccer-related maxillofacial injuries, and call attention to the risk factors that favor these injuries. A total of 108 patients, who attended hospital because of maxillofacial injuries during soccer within a period of 8 years, were included in this study. The relationship of the patients with soccer, the type, the site, the severity, the mechanism of the injuries and

Acute elbow trauma in children: role of ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of occult elbow fracture in children is often challenging due to equivocal or negative repeated radiographic findings. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential diagnostic role of US in children who have sustained elbow trauma with an elbow joint effusion but no fracture seen on initial radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 14 consecutive children (age range 5-15 years) with elbow trauma whose elbow radiographs showed an effusion without fracture who underwent emergency imaging (within the first 72 h) with US and MRI. The aim of US was to demonstrate a l

Baseball and softball injuries.

Baseball and softball injuries can be a result of both acute and overuse injuries. Soft tissue injuries include contusions, abrasions, and lacerations. Return to play is allowed when risk of further injury is minimized. Common shoulder injuries include those to the rotator cuff, biceps tendon, and glenoid labrum. Elbow injuries are common in baseball and softball and include medial epicondylitis, ulnar collateral ligament injury, and osteochondritis dissecans. Typically conservative treatment with relative rest, medication, and a rehabilitation program will allow return to play. Surgical inter

[Fall from a height of 13.5 meters of a child without major injuries].

High-velocity traumas, especially falls from a height, are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Despite the height of fall is a poor predictor of major injury, we must be aware of relevant injuries especially of the head and the musculoskeletal system. The aim is to recognize all relevant problems, or better to avoid the fall. We report a case from a fall of 13.5 meters with an ellbow-fracture and contusions of the head.

Motoneuron loss associated with chronic locomotion impairments after spinal cord contusion in the rat.

Information on the nature of deficits and adaptive mechanisms occurring after spinal cord injury is essential to the design of strategies for promoting functional recovery. Motor impairments and compensations were quantified by three-dimensional kinematic analysis in freely walking rats, 6 months after mild cervical (C7) or moderate lumbar (L2) spinal cord contusion. After C7 contusion, the animals showed reduced elbow extension and wrist movement, whereas reduced knee extension was the main impairment after L2 contusion. In both cases, the duration of the walking cycle increased and forward v

Are bone bruises a possible cause of osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum? A case report and review of the literature.

A 17-year old soccer-player sustained a fracture and dislocation of the ulnar epicondyle combined with a bone bruises at the radial head and the capitellum. An open reduction and internal fixation was performed using two K-wires. Initial recovery was uneventful. After the operation he was discharged home and reviewed on a regular basis. When bony union had occurred the two K-wires were removed. However, on follow up he continued to complain of pain on the radial aspect of the joint and did not regain his normal range of movement. A further MRI was performed. Now a grade II osteochondritis diss

Traumatic humeral articular cartilage shear (THACS) lesion in a professional rugby player: a case report.

A 20 year old male professional rugby player was seen at the clinic for evaluation of shoulder pain after rugby play. Magnetic resonance imaging showed extensive subchondral bone bruising of the humeral head with defect of the articular cartilage. Arthroscopy showed that the inferior half of the humeral head had extensive articular cartilage loss with nearly 70% of the inferior head having lost its cartilage. Sports medicine doctors should be aware that the shoulder joint in young competitive athletes playing contact sports may be exposed to greater risk of this kind of injury.

Surgical repair of brachial plexus injury: a multinational survey of experienced peripheral nerve surgeons.

OBJECT: Brachial plexus injuries (BPIs) are often devastating events that lead to upper-extremity paralysis, rendering the limb a painful extraneous appendage. Fortunately, there are several nerve repair techniques that provide restoration of some function. Although there is general agreement in the medical community concerning which patients may benefit from surgical intervention, the actual repair technique for a given lesion is less clear. The authors sought to identify and better define areas of agreement and disagreement among experienced peripheral nerve surgeons as to the management of

Overview of injuries in the young athlete.

It is estimated that 30 million children in the US participate in organised sports programmes. As more and more children participate in sports and recreational activities, there has been an increase in acute and overuse injuries. Emergency department visits are highest among the school-age to young adult population. Over one-third of school-age children will sustain an injury severe enough to be treated by a doctor or nurse. The yearly costs have been estimated to be as high as 1.8 billion US dollars. There are physical and physiological differences between children and adults that may cause c

[Treatment of displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children at the orthopaedic ward of the Children's Hospital in Kielce].

Ninety five children in age from 4 to 12 years (61 boys and 34 girls) with displaced supracondylar distal humerus fractures were treated at the orthopaedic ward of The Children's Hospital in Kielce between I 2000-XII 2001. The method of choice was closed reduction and percutaneous fixation with Kirschner wires (74 children). We also used closed reduction and application of an above elbow cast (12 children), skeletal traction with fixation after swelling resignation (5 children), and open reduction and internal fixation (4 children). In 90 cases we did not observe any neurovascular disorders, a

[Pediatric "floating elbow"--case reports].

Floating elbow is an injury that is characterized by simultaneous fracture of humerus and forearm of the same extremity. The injury is caused by high energy (falls, car accidents) and is often associated with extensive soft tissue contusion of affected limb and there may be present lesion of neurocircular bundle. Operative treatment (minimally invasive percutaneous pinning) should be performed as soon as possible after patient's admission and this treatment should be preferred before circular casting, which may cause compartment syndrome. In the paper we present two cases of pediatric floating
