BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Since 2000, a substantial increase in injuries related to nonmotorized scooters (kickboards) has been observed among children. The authors conducted a population-based prospective study to characterize these injuries in comparison with skateboard-related injuries during the same period.
METHODS: All children (age <16 years) presenting with a scooter-related injury between July and October 2000 in Graz (Austria) and all children presenting with a scooter- or skateboard-related injury between June and September 2001 in Helsinki, Finland were interviewed at the time of seekin

Upper extremity compression neuropathies are fairly rare in athletes. Initially, most can be managed conservatively. These conditions can follow direct contusion of the tissues that overlay these peripheral nerves or can result from vigorous, repetitive, athletic activity leading to tissue swelling and ischemia with nerve compression symptoms. A complete history and physical examination, including a neurologic examination, should be paramount when treating athletes with upper extremity injuries. Early diagnosis and treatment with conservative measures such as splinting, rest, activity modifica

69 patients with kickboard injuries were treated over a 5-month period. 6 patients were admitted to hospital. Fractures (48%), contusions/ lacerations (45%) and capsular/ ligamentuous injuries (27%) were the most prevalent types of injury. Injuries of the elbow, forearm, wrist and hand accounted for 54% of all cases. Ankle (23%), head (6%) and knee were other regions frequently involved. It is concluded that kickboard-driving imposes a severe risk of injuries. The typical kickboard injuries was the fracture of the wrist and the ankle sprain. Protective equipment for the injured regions is very

A 43-year-old man underwent revision of a loose total elbow arthroplasty in 1995. The arthroplasty had been implanted 20 years previously for post-traumatic osteoarthritis after a gunshot wound complicated by permanent ulnar nerve palsy. The patient suffered a minimally displaced periprosthetic fracture 4 years after implantation that was treated closed. The patient subsequently developed severe loosening with bony dilation. During revision surgery, while grasping and removing the periprosthetic membrane from within the humeral medullary canal with a Kerrison rongeur, dorsiflexion of the wrist

We studied 2,552 snowboarding injuries and 5048 skiing injuries sustained during 1988-97. The number of snowboarding injuries had been increasing year by year and was 6 times as many as skiing injuries (2.0 versus 0.35 per 1,000 visits). The types of snowboarding injuries included fractures (39%), lacerations (21%), dislocations (17%), and contusions (15%). Upper extremity injuries were more frequent than those in the lower extremity in snowboarders. The commonest fractures involved the radius (48%), clavicle (11%), humerus (11%), and ulna (7-8%). The shoulder joint was most commonly dislocate

Avascular necrosis of the radial head is uncommon. A 20-year review of records at a Pediatric Trauma Center revealed eight cases of avascular necrosis of the radial head in children with an average of 10 years (range, 7-16 years). Symptoms of pain or restriction of elbow motion began at an average of 23 months after trauma in seven cases, and in one case, there was no history of trauma. Of the seven secondary to trauma, six resulted from a fall, and one from a torsional injury. The types of injuries associated with avascular necrosis of the radial head were two supracondylar fractures, a fract

Tennis is a popular racquet sport played by boys, girls, men and women. Tennis players frequently begin playing in childhood and may continue playing into late adulthood. Preadolescent and adolescent players have open growth plates and a reduced muscle power, lower level of coordination and smaller stature compared with adult players. The physical characteristics of the young tennis player mean that unique demands are placed on the developing athlete which can, in turn, be associated with different types and patterns of injury. The most common types of injury in tennis players of all ages are
